Where''s a good place to get a nice quality, not-too-expensive gold chain for a pendant?

I would probably look on ebay for something like that.

How about trying QVC?

Thanks, all.

consider with gold chain that the type of link is inportant to durability over time...a light weight chain that is easily broken if pulled wont be a good long term investment...so make sure the chain has some substance...box chains, figaro, and wheat link are more resistant to wear and tear over the years and can handle a heavier pendant.I would stay away from hollow link chains because the links will cave in and cant be repaired.Because you dont mind collecting pre-owned jewelry i would suggest that some pawn shops will have good buys on chains...if you go pre-owned(pawn,estate or e-bay)make sure the chain hasnt been stretched out(pulling on or sleeping in chain will stretch out the links and make them weak)and loupe the chain for breaks, repairs and cracks. Also consider that the color of gold may be different from the color of the pendant that will be worn on the chain.Ask that the chain be measured...chains that measure exacts like15, 16,18,24,30,32 inches can help show that the chain has no stretch or been cut down. Also ask about gram weight so you can determine how much per gram you are paying to determine if you are over paying for the chain.Hope these buying hints help.Show us what you find!

pawnshops

If you want to see a huge selection of chains with gram weights and millimeter thickness, look at the catalog at www.MyronToback.com - it is a good place to get ideas for what style you like. I think they only sell wholesale, not retail, but if you don''t know the difference between the look of a figaro and a parallel curb chain, you can see all of that stuff there!

I should have said, this is actually not for me, but for a gift--my friend''s daughter''s Bat Mitzvah. For myself I would happily buy from a thrift shop, pawn shop, etc (and often do), but this is my young friend''s special day, so I want something brand new and good quality.

According to her dad, she has been given some pretty pendants, but needs a chain to wear them on.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I wound up ordering a 14K gold chain from Overstock, and also a 14K gold and pearl set consisting of a necklace with pink pearls spaced around it and matching pink pearl studs. They''re both very nice. So I just have to decide which to give her.

The pink pearl set is very pretty and I think would be appropriate for a young girl (Bat Mitzvah girls are 13 years old). It''s more impressive looking and celebratory than the chain, which just sort of sits there. On the other hand, the chain will be more useful, since she can wear it with any pendant, and her dad told me she needs one--she has a new pendant but nothing to wear it on.

I guess I could give her both, but that seems like overkill.

14K chain

gold and pearl set

Advice?

I would go with the gold chain unless you know she''s a bit of a girlier in her style and the soft pink pearls would be appreciated. Its a very nice set that I would happily wear now, but not what I would have worn when I was 13. I was more tomboyish, and at that age it seemed only my grandmother wore pearls.

Thanks, Cara.

I vote for the gold...i have to agree that the chain will be worn more and is needed for her pendant...the pearls are nice but probably wont get the wear that the chain would...either is a wonderful gift for a 13 year old.

p/s....a woven wheat is my favorite link for a chain...i have a 2mm and a 3 mm that get alot of wear either alone or with one of several pendants.
