Where is the best place for second hand rings (loose diamond stones)?

I was considering perhaps buying a second hand ring (or loose stone, if there is such a thing) and then having the stone reset in a setting of my choice. I was just wondering the best place for this and if there are any issues I need to be aware? Such as surface marks? Does the stone need to be repolished etc?
