Just wondering where someone would go if they wanted to get top dollar for a setting and a diamond? ideally i wanted to use it in a "trade up" policy with a new ring...but the company i purchased it through does not have any rings I am interested in...

Diamonds are not good investments. They loose at least 20% when you walk out of the store. The best you can hope for is selling it yourself through ebay, DB or LT. However I think most stuff has sold there around 30-40% off. You could see if whoever you will buy a new diamond from will take a trade in etc. You could also look into consignment at GOG and Jbeg. But be prepared to wait a long time for the right buyer.

Overall there really isn't anyway to sell your diamond for top dollar.

Two other suggestions: idonowidont, and "ex boyfriend jewelry" might be possibilities.

What kind of setting is it? I am looking for a halo for a 7.8 - 8mm RB.

I have sold quite a few settings on ebay. There is a surprisingly robust market for anything that is a deal. There are people who buy them for colored stones, and there is a whole other discussion board for sims whose participants buy top-grade settings for sims. DiamondBistro and LoupeTroop should reach them. There are also singles like me who buy rings for ourselves, and are not concerned about stigma or "used," because we don't have to answer to anyone else. :D

"Top dollar" can mean different things to different people. But if you sell on ebay, you will probably lose 15% to ebay and PayPal fees, and you need to definitely have everything documented, and show detailed pics, and point out any flaws. There are ebay buyers who will pitch a fit over a used ring having any flaws, so you need to announce all of the blems and "flaws" right there in public, so they can't claim "not as described."

And most diamonds that have sold there at 30-40% off are fairly in-demand stones - if your stone isn't ideal-cut or a nicely-patterned OEC/OMC, you'll either have to drop the price further or wait a loooooong time.

I also think selling diamond and setting separately with the option of a discount if bought together probably makes things go faster. As TC1987 pointed out, lots of people want settings for colored stones or sims, and then lots of people want a discounted diamond and have a setting in mind. Trying to sell them only together limits the buyers to those who want that kind of diamond in that kind of setting (now, if it's just a plain solitaire, it probably doesn't matter that much, since it'll just be priced at the price of the diamond, most likely).

Also, Brian Gavin recuts diamonds. It takes a while, but the cost used to be $350 per carat. Not all diamonds are good candidates for recuts. There might be feathers or inclusions that would make it risky. Or it might lose a lot of weight, depending on how much they have to take off. BrianGavinDiamonds.com is their web site.
