They come from France. Oh wait, that''s Coneheads. I''ve heard they come from cabbage patches, or storks bring them in the middle of the night. Or is that a fairy? Wait, no! Um, Santa brings them. Or is it the Easter Bunny? Oh crap. I dont know where they come from!

If you find out the years that those cuts were popular ... and the find out which main diamond mines were in use WHEN ... maybe you can get some idea.

If you're worried about blood diamonds -- I believe that's a much more recent phenomenon.

There are some NEW "old cut" stones on the market though -- a very, very few.

ETA: Surfgirl ... HA!!!

From the 1870s through the 1920s, virtually all diamonds on the market came from South Africa or Namibia.

I watched a "blood diamond" documentary today and that is what brought this to mind, however, I know that it started in the ''90s. I just began wondering where my great grandma''s ring came from. I was thinking about how long it would have taken to mine, ship, cut and sell a diamond 80 years ago.

Captain~Thanks!

Yes, I believe we traded with Namibia...they sent us diamonds and we sent them fondue sets*...

*ETA: Anyone who gets that reference...well, let's just say I'll know how old you are!
