Where are the quality clothes?

I use to love Lands End, but i have found the quality has dropped significantly over the years. Same with LLBean. I hate that. They use to be my go to for casual clothes.
Bean has such a great return/replacement policy, though. That's their saving grace for me. Lands End kids clothes are pretty durable, but I don't know about their adult clothing because I've never purchased any. They certainly used to be well-known for their quality, though. Too bad.

I agree. That's why I only buy from them when the price is super discounted. Sometimes I'll be surprised and the item ends up being super durable lol

Me too.

I did end up finding a really cute sweater dress at Eddie Bauer that is actually cute on my shape and size, and everything was 50% off or I would not have purchased it. It looks great with leggings and my grey lace up boots. And it is super comfortable.

There's a fairly sizable garment sewing community on the internets that seems to have cropped up over the past several years. Many people seem to take to garment sewing for a number of the reasons, but often its related to fit, fabric choice, construction quality, difficulty finding the desired style, or labor practices.

Not sure if that's an interesting route :) Personally I find it to be an interesting challenge!

It is not my thing because I do not have an affinity for sewing, but I love the idea of it. I cannot envisage pieces together, which gave me a terrible experience in the home economics that was obligatory in my youth. I also never learned to knit anything but squares and strips, but I used to adore knitting and was able to make all kinds of patterns within what I knit because I was able to count how many stitches I knit and purled; I just could never envisage patterns fitting together! So I knit cables and so forth in my strips.

I admire you! I wish I could create a garment out of my imagination (or even choose a pattern and decide on doing it in a fabric of my own choice)!

I can relate - I used to be facinated by the idea, but terrified of a sewing machine. Eventually curiosity won out :)

It's not your home-ec sewing world anymore. There's been a rise recently of indie pattern makers, which greatly expands the offerings. You can go down the youtube rabbit hole for hours on most any technique, and there are lots of folks who can help diagnose fitting issues and suggest adjustments (one of the harder parts, imho) based on selfies.

While local fabric availability is declining, theres some amazing fabric available online these days. Its hard not to dream of fun clothes when you find some serious top shelf fabric.

@chroman and @AGBF sewing is so fascinating to me. My grandmother sewed many an outfit for me as a young child and girl. I admit I bought myself a machine years ago and never had the time to take it up. Maybe now that I am retired I should bring it out. There are certainly more opportunities for learning now on the internet but I have not perused a fabric store in a very long time.

If you are comfortable shopping online I can recommend these stores for good quality clothes:
https://www.countryroad.com/shop/woman
https://www.trenery.co/
https://www.witchery.com/
https://intl.saba.com.au/
https://www.veronikamaine.com.au/
https://global.cue.cc/
Most are the same parent company so they quality is consistent. They all ship internationally.

Are you Aussie by any chance?

I wear most of these brands, especially Cue and can attest that it practically lasts forever!!!!!!!!! Very pretty as well!!

Me too ...

I was too small to learn from two grandmothers and four great aunts all very good at such things, but something must have rubbed off - it has always been a pleasure to tinker ! [In: needle, scissors, pen / chalk, pins, fine fabrics, time; Out: minimalistic tayloring, etc. all closely fit ... ]

When I went down to Virginia recently to retrieve my Christmas ornaments, I found a bag with three sweaters I had never worn....

One was an ivory Talbot's sweater with green shamrocks worked into the knit. Another was an ivory German (actually, probably Austrian) knit.
...

I revived this thread because I remembered that Sharon had listed several brands of sweaters with which I wasn't familiar in it and I wanted to refresh my memory about their names. I just discovered one that I like and I wanted to know if it was one she mentioned. (I saw the brand listed on a website along with Geiger, which is the brand of sweater I found in my Virginia house, so I think it must be a classic brand.) I do not see it mentioned anywhere in this thread, however. It is Ivko. I was introduced to an Ivko coat through the Sundance catalogue, which I mentioned, and then went on to buy several Ivko sweaters, several of them from Europe (the UK; the Netherlands; and Germany).

I had never heard of Ivko before, but I have fallen in love with it. Does anyone here know it? For how long have you been aware of it? What pieces of it do you wear: the coats; the jackets; the sweaters; something else? It is all brand new to me!

Here is just a brief glimpse of Ivko:

I've read a few replies, and I agree with those who mentioned sewing for yourself (or finding a tailor). I started making my own pants in the summer of 2015 because I couldn't find any that fit, had pockets, and were affordable. That summer I spent a lot of $$ just learning and almost gave up when I finally found a combination that worked! I haven't looked back and currently make all my undies, tops, most bottoms (need to do my jeans). I'm still trying to figure out bras and I'm a bit fearful of socks (I have plantar fasciitis). I am so happy that I learned. For those fearful of sewing machines, I say get a vintage baby as they are easy to use and workhorses. :D

I cannot tell you how much I admire you for this, Cozystitches.

Yes! There is no comparison for clothes that are custom or custom altered vs store bought unless you are one of the lucky few who store bought fits perfectly. The rest of us need some help. Personally I have no skills (sewing or otherwise but at least I recognize this and am self aware :P2) but fortunately my dh who got frustrated a few years ago with his tailor and the fit of store bought clothes in general decided he was going to do something about it. So he bought a sewing machine (an affordable one) and taught himself to sew from youtube I believe. And fast forward to now and he is not only doing wonderful alterations for both of us but he is actually sewing clothes. I just have to pick out material and he will make me a dress! Of course I have to get my you know what in gear to find the material I want.

Cozy I remember a while back you shared some photos of your creations. Do you mind sharing some more pics? Would love to see them. So impressive.:appl:

@AGBF :kiss2: You're so sweet. :D Honestly, I can't sew an actual straight line, so it's amazing that I can make the stuff I do. Perseverance is the key! I am stubborn, and I wanted clothes, now my drawers are stuffed!!! :D

@missy :kiss2: That's so cool that your hubby sews for you!!! Has he found the online pattern makers??? They are my FAVORITES!!! :D Love Notions, Stitch Upon A Time, Patterns 4 Pirates, Halla just to name a few. They have groups on FB and they all have free patterns (if you join the FB group). :D I can't remember if we can PM here, but if we are, send me a message. :D I have LOTS of pictures!!! I now sew for my mom (I make all her undies!), my eldest (on occasion), my youngest son (was floored because he ASKED me for boxerbriefs!!!), my middle child is not as appreciative and therefore doesn't get much, I've also sewn for one sister and my dad. Hubby does not want me to make him ANYTHING despite the fact that I've offered (he's a big guy who WHINES that nothing fits! :wall:). A few pictures! First up ME Made woven top and knit pants 20024033_10159180137490085_497384563294188282_o.jpg Scrappy undies! LOVE THEM! 23593725_10159774150355085_1485122237255475390_o.jpg A favorite pic of my dd wearing my mom's top (its velvet with additional sleeves), love the style but loathe working with velvet. 26233403_10160005603510085_426063969473423433_o.jpg Raglan style (aka baseball) 26240374_10160041249530085_4747132262285189916_o.jpg Those are a few...I have loads more!

Thank you @Cozystitches! Love your beautiful work. :appl:

I’ll ask my DH about that. I have no clue.

Thanks! :D I love it and its fun for me! Today I'm trying a new pattern (camis for the girls) and possibly a second pattern (raglan w/color blocking options). :D

I NEED those leggings you are wearing in your first photo, Cozystitches! I only started wearing leggings a year or so ago. I used to feel too self conscious in them. Now I just figure that if everyone else wears them, I can, too! You did a great job with them and you look fabulous in them! So fashionable!

Thanks!!! Giggle! They're actually pants (made of thicker material and are more straight legged rather than leggings) ;) And honestly, they were easy! Hubs hates leggings, I typically only wear them at home because they have no pockets....all pants must have pockets!

@Cozystitches, Greg made a sun canopy for me this summer for our long distance cycling adventures. Sharing a few pics.

Here he is at his inexpensive little sewing machine at the beach house.

and finishing it in Brooklyn

Back to beach...
So it has 3 pieces. Above and 2 sides when I need extra protection and the sides are removable.

suncanopybygreg.jpeg

suncanopyontrike.jpg

Here it is up so I can get into the seat easily.
bikecanopyup.jpg
and it has a fan option at the top.

canopyfan.jpg

I am extremely sun sensitive and have PMLE as well as Schamberg's disease so I must be protected from the sun and the heat. If not I get extreme reactions that cause swelling and pain and rashes all over my body. Here is a reaction with the fan and canopy which is much better vs not having that protection. Sorry if this is TMI. Just wanted to share why my dh goes to such lengths to help protect me from the sun and heat. This is a mild reaction for me so you can imagine what happens if I am not protected.

schambergdisease.jpg

Fortunately my dh has retrofitted our bikes and added the fan which all helps. I still get the reactions but less severely and I can enjoy cycling no matter the weather.

And a little July 4th option :sun:

Deb, yes! Leggings rock. LOVE them. So versatile and anyone can wear them. Cozy I love your handmade leggings. That print is great.
I wear leggings as tights under dresses and with boots or ballet flats. So comfortable and IMO look smart when worn right. Enjoy!

missy-

I had a friend growing up who had some serious skin issues. Later in life she developed arthritis, which I think may have been related to it. Except for her, I always thought i had the most sensitive skin of anyone I knew. Although I have lived as a blonde (sometimes a redhead) for years (and been told by people that they know I am a natural blonde), I was born with brown hair so dark that people often thought it was black. Only my mother used to say to me, "you have a redhead's skin". I got a sunburn if i went to the beach for 5 minutes, even covered with the Sunburn lotions we had in those days (think "Sea and Ski"). After 15 minutes my mother would wrap me in a terrycloth bathrobe and I would sweat on the sand, enveloped in towels and blankets. I still managed to have sunburns with huge blisters on my back. I often looked red as a boiled lobster and never had a "bit of color" or a tan in my life. I did get freckles, though.

I see in you a kindred spirit and Greg is a true Prince Charming. I cannot believe what a gem he is to have rigged up that canopy for you! What a sweetheart! But of course, there is no more deserving woman on the face of the earth! For you are a true angel. You two deserve each other.

Enough of a threadjack! Post some pictures of yourself in leggings! Soon it will be too warm to put any on! Do you have a favorite pair you could pose in? (Anyone else want to post pictures of leggings?)

Aww thank you Deb. You are a sweetheart and yes I think we are kindred spirits in many ways. (((Hugs))). I also agree with you about Greg being my prince charming. He is my b'shert.

I am happy to oblige your request. I will share the most colorful ones I have in my photos but keep in mind I mainly wear black and grey and navy so the colors are just occasionally. I am at heart a monochromatic color person. White kitchen, clean lines, simple minimalist colors. However some of these photos may make you think otherwise but that's the truth. I like black and white and navy and grey best.

Haha this girl is a real star but I don't want to share her pic just in case she minds...though she has given permission on another thread I don't know if it would be OK to show her face on this one. Suffice it to say she is a legging girl at heart like me. Love this woman she is a gem among gems. As are the other women in the above photos.

Hope you enjoy the photos Deb! And sorry for the overload. You know I don't do anything halfway if I can help it.

@missy So sweet of your hubby! That looks like a cool contraption he built for you! :D I love how creative so many of are! :D

Thank you so much for the wonderful photos, missy! I absolutely love them. Not only do I admire your leggings, but each of your outfits is a work of art. You coordinate your accessories in such detail that I enjoy looking at what you are wearing piece by piece; it is like watching "The Devil Wears Prada" which I like on so many levels! Thank you for spending so much time on entertaining me and all the rest of us!

Big hugs,
Deb :wavey:

@missy I love all the boots, skirts and leggings! I am taking a couple pair with a couple skirts and boots to Ireland because I don't want to be the sloppy American tourist. And my big fluffy 100% cashmere ($$$) sweater that I was talking about earlier in this thread. I love the feel of it when it is chilly.

Missy is chic no doubt @AGBF! I love DWP.
