do you think the Sales Associates pay attention to the type of jewelry that you are sporting? any difference in behavior b/t mall stores and high end stores?

I would think that they must... but I find there are so many clueless salespeople out there. When I last visited a Tiffany , even the manager that was helping me seemed clueless.. she did not even know the products they carry...

Nope. Nobody ever pays attention to me. Might be because everyone thinks I look like an 18 year old... Damn these Asian genes...

Yes. I've had salespeople comment on the watch I was wearing. Brand name watches are easy to spot.

Yep. I got dreadful service at Tiffany's until I, a) asked the sales rep specifically if he could please stop chatting with his friend, and even after he did, he wasn't particularly attentive until he noticed enough of the bling for the penny to drop that, b) I was a collector.

It doesn't surprise me. I think it's silly given all the stories about, oh, the founders of Stanford (apocryphal, but culturally relevant), but this is a culture that lives by its status symbols. Easy enough to end run it, though - if you can't pre-plan the presentation, an air of hauteur and a plummy accent will get you 90% of the way there!

I didn't know, either!

What I will say is that when I have gone in a jewelry store with a friend with a 3 ct+ diamond, service was amazing! This summer, mom2boys, yenny, and I are going in some nice shops with some very high priced jewelry items, and I think with the rings that those two ladies have, we will be taken much more seriously than if I went in alone! They actually bring out the nice jewels for people to look at when they think the customer has the potential to buy!

I will say that Tiffany has thought I had their rings since I have the Vatche repro setting and a real Legacy band.

Oh haha, you're ok DS! DF on the other hand...
Out of curiosity, what did you think I was? :)

Yes, I do notice the salespeople do a once over and check out the jewelry. They also notice my watch which noone else really ever notices.

DS, you've got quite the stunning jewelry collection yourself! We'll be following your lead through all the shops first!

I don't know if they do, but when I go into a jewelry store, I think very carefully about the jewelry I'm going to wear. I usually dress down big time, wearing my OMC studs, plain band, and maybe add something like a diamond band. But that's usually it. Of course, I prefer to peruse the mom and pop shops - no chains for me. Of course, I'm usually aiming for people who deal with more colored stones, so that narrows it down a bit.

But once we start talking, sales people are intimidated by me when it comes to colored stones. Which is annoying.

Privately owned jewelry stores definitely notice my jewelry, and are attentive. However, the chain stores seem to have employees that are more consumed with their personal conversations and text messages; they seem like they are doing a favor by answering a question about their merchandise! This applies to the "high end" chain stores too! I don't think they get it . . . jewelry is a luxury, not a necessity. :nono:

Me too. Minus the Asian part. Unless I'm wearing Poppy - then I receive great service. I'd think retail employees would know better by now - lots of very wealthy people dress down.

I have no more money DF. I spent it all buying you that ridiculously priced watch.
Which then got stolen by a passing bird that gave it to its master with one eye.

This really happened.

Maybe you and I can do a 31 Jump Street remake of the remake.

Okay, moving on from the YT  DF drama....

I am not sure if sales associates pay more attention, but today I had the strangest experience. I was looking at a David Yurman ring that caught my eye, but I didn't know the price and just wanted to try it on because I have a nice Nordstrom gift card sitting in my wallet and it's totally saying SPEND ME. The strange thing was the sales associate made it expliciately clear to me, BEFORE I even looked at the ring that it was mean to be a stacker and I should have two or three of the rings or basically none at all. It was silly b/c it was a sterling silver ring for $750 and there is NO way I'd pay $2250 plus tax for three SS rings when I could have a nice diamond ring for the same...so we wondered off to look at other options. I have NO idea how he thought I'd be the one to blow that much on three SS rings...it must have been my awesome shoes. Earlier someone complemented me on them.

I don't shop chain stores, but then again I've never done much jewelry shopping. Most of my collection is comprised of gifts and some (now in storage--all the gold I kept hearing I should sell when prices increased) I bought at wholesale when I worked for one department store and an independent jeweler.

Currently we patronize a local jeweler my parents used to frequent and whose proprietor is now a good friend of my husband. When we shop as a couple or family (bring the baby), the staff is more attentive. I recently ran in to pick up a repair and special order, and wasn't recognized, which was fine with me. I don't have time to stop and chit chat everywhere I go on my few-and-far-between days off work. I love my new sparkly, but it took 2 months to receive it through this store, whereas I could've ordered it online and had it in 2 days with the same amount of "personalized service." :/

As for dressing to impress, or not: I never go out in sweats or yoga pants, even when I go to the grocery store. Some can pull off that look and that's great, but not me. The most casual I get is dark denim, riding boots, and a sweater with a 3/4 length coat over top. I wear my everyday jewelry on my ring fingers, wrists, earlobes, and never encounter any flack. I haven't carried a handbag for months now, I have a little wristlet/clutch and a diaper bag. Honestly no one looks at me anymore--they're too busy checking out the darling on my hip these days. ;))

YT -- I think you live next door to me. My neighbors are Korean -- maybe we've been collecting beauties side by side all this time! (I hope not, actually -- we called the police a few weeks ago about their treatment of their dog. :nono: )

When I know I'm going into a jewelry store I don't put on extra bling but I make sure what I am wearing is noticeable for quality if they know enough to tell. In independent high-end stores I haven't noticed a difference in service, but sometimes a piece will be a conversation-starter & then they get all kinds of fun stuff from the vault. They may hope I'm gonna buy it (nyet, no chance) but it seems like they enjoy yakking with another gem lover anyhow. It's not wasting their time because I don't do that if other people are waiting.

I don't bother with chain stores anymore.

Well that's just terrible! Makes me so angry! What is wrong with them! What happened?
That's definitely not me cuz my babies are spoiled rotten. I even get offended when people call them dogs. I'm like no, they are my babies! They were birthed from my loins! Hahaha!

But how awesome would it be if that really was the case! That we've been living right next to each other this whole time!

No nice stores where I live but when I leave the boonies to bigger places, yes, my jewellery is definitely noticed. There's no reason for me to visit chain or mall type stores so my visits have all be to either higher end or "mom and pop" type stores. Service in such stores are almost always consistently attentive.

Totally DS! The three of us will stop everyone in their tracks! ;)

In the smaller jewelry shops (mom and pop owned and the only shops I visit in person these days) I always get noticed for my jewelry. And I get comments/compliments (original ER diamond and now OEC ER diamond). Whether or not service is better I cannot say but it doesn't hurt. I never have any complaints about the service in these stores. They are very attentive.

A while ago, I walked into a jewelry store and asked to see a 7.5mm diamond. The salesgirl just looked at me and said "you know those are expensive right?" I was like "yesss"... And she just shrugged... Like she thought I couldn't afford it!
Then the manager refused to show me any. Telling me that she will after she sees some kind of money like a deposit. I had no idea that you needed a deposit to look at a freaking stone! Stupid.

That's just rude behavior and a bad business practice. :nono: I am furious for you. Was there anyone higher up that you could complain to? That is just unbelievable! Who the heck do they think they are??? :angryfire:
