So. After all that. Is BJ are you pro or against? I get that your against forcing the issue by packing the courts, don't like Obama, and understand the civil rights movement very well. But I'm still confused as to what you thinks should happen, and how it should happen to make it acceptable for you.

a republican today has said "its a generational issue" and that while the party can stand pat now, its going to have to revisit the issue or lose votes.

pragmatic but its the truth.

What SHOULD be is a different thread.

This thread is about when and if gay marriage will be legal throughout America - and NEVER is one of the choices.

Please start a new thread about whether gay marriage should be legalized.

So Obama has his big announcement and Romney is exposed as bullying gay students (plural) on the same day. At first I thought the headlines about Romney were some kind of a joke. You can't make this stuff up!

I was watching Rachel Maddow last night and she was really funny when expressing her views on Romney and the things he did as a teenager. Apparently he has no recollection of bullying anyone and was laughing during an interview discussing it. Nervous laughter, perhaps?

I watched the whole clip. Thanks!

I think you're giving Romney too much credit though. I don't think it's nervous laughter. I think Romney really thinks these things are funny- today.

I think it will be a while. People who do not know gay couples personally may not realize that they can be in love and in committed relationships just like straight couples.

Someone posted this graph on FB

I think it may take another generation.

It is interesting to note that until 1973, homosexuality was classified as a mental disorder. (I do not believe that it is but I can certainly understand how someone growing up believing this may have an issue with gay marriage).

Another thing to note is that 'marriage' has two definitions. There is the 'government recognized marriage' and also the 'church recognized marriage (for some this is a sacrament). The two are very different but the same word, 'marriage', is used. I believe this may contribute to some people's objections to gay marriage.

I am not happy about the ban in NC but even less happy about all of the hatred I am seeing towards the NC voters.

Huh? Please elaborate on the bolded. You're more upset about people being angry at the bigotry and hatred of NC voters than you are at the actual bigotry and hatred of NC voters?

Does not compute.

Yes, really. Forget the fact that North Carolina just made even civil unions illegal and whom that will affect and how. You would be more (emphasis in the original) upset about "the bigotry and hatred" of North Carolina voters? Wow.

Some people don't know what bigotry is. I'd like to tell them what it is but I like to remain a member in good standing here if you know what I mean.

Should have legalized it in 1776.
^^Cross that out, it should never have been illegal anywhere.
Will legalize it when it is politically advantageous for the majority of lawmakers to do so.

Ummm, yeah, actually you can.

“The family of John Lauber is releasing a statement saying the portrayal of John is factually incorrect and we are aggrieved that he would be used to further a political agenda. There will be no more comments from the family.”

By all means link to the statement. There are five independent witnesses.

Even Romney did not deny it. He only said he did not remember it BUT he remembers the kid wasn't gay.

Let's hear which facts are incorrect according to family that weren't there.

Seriously, I'd like to know who you are quoting and if there is a "statement", please link to it.

They probably feel stigmatized, you know, from the days when psychiatry said gays were mental defectives and the law said they were criminals.

Well if that's the case, it's just sad.

I don't know, but one day, I hope I get to hear my kids say, "I can't believe it was ever an issue". Just like when I was a kid, I couldn't believe that racial segregation ever existed. Or when my parents were kids and they couldn't believe that women used to have no rights.
I'd like it to be soon.

When you say gay marriage do you mean in a church/mosque/synagogue or a civil marriage ceremony?

I suspect it will still be a long time, but I wish it were done already!!!

The family's loved one died at the relatively young age of 47, yet you mock them for not wanting his name dragged out 50 years later and 20 years after his death for some cheap, cynical, political ploy?

But you despise intolerance, right?

ENOUGH everyone. Be adults or this thread will be closed a time outs will be given. As it is this thread is toeing the line of PS policies.

You replied to me, and you said, or implied, that the story was made up. You offered as proof of your assertion the family's statement. The family's statement says that there were factual inaccuracies in the Washington Post story, but did not specify any. It also stated very clearly that they had no knowledge of the incident. If they had no knowledge of it, then, logically, they do not know whether it was made up.
