When to reshank an old ring?

I’m thinking that the shank on one of my rings is a bit too thin. The quote from the jeweler yesterday was $300 for a 1/4 shank. She didn’t seem overly concerned but I wanted to get some opinions and see if I can hold off for a bit or if this needs to get done ASAP. TIA!

More than half of my rings are like that (came like that) and i have safely been wearing them for years. I think you can wait a while.

I think it's perfectly fine. Unless you intend on wearing it to change a tire, I don't think it's a problem.

I've been taught to change a tire, but I'd rather call AAA!

Actually, I have no idea how to change a tire BUT this is just another reason for us to get together someday, so you can teach me how to be a useful person LOL!

@YadaYadaYada My antique cluster ring is thin at the bottom just like that. It’s perfectly fine. I’m going to wear mine until it’s paper thin. I’ve even waited for a ring a little too long when I was younger until it snapped at the bottom..It got repaired without a problem. I wouldn’t wait that long but I think you can wait.

phew
good to know
i was worried about 30% wear on shank as mentioned on the appraisal for great Aunty Netta's ER

Thanks @MamaBee for that reassurance, I love that cluster of yours, so pretty!

@Daisys and Diamonds, I always have to check with the level-headed PS’ers because I tend to be an anxious person. It goes like this:

“Is the band to thin? I think it’s too thin, wait maybe not. Yeah maybe from this angle (looking at it upside down and sideways). Oh shoot, let me ask PS what they think.” LOL!

It's not like car brakes or a roof; you're fine. It's of course less sturdy and much more likely to go out of round but it's not gonna fly off your finger.

I actually just did my brakes (and rotors) but the roof needs to get done, probably before the ring ;)

30% wear is great! You can go a long time!

that's really good to know

thank you

i guess grandma was gentle with it and didn't do mid century house work while wearing it
