When she says 'princess' does she really mean 'square'?

I realize this question can only be answered for sure by my lovely girlfriend. But I wanted to run it by you folks. She tells me she wants a princess cut center stone for her engagement ring that will be coming soon. I'm pretty unimpressed with the princess stones I've seen in person, and I'd love to surprise her with a unique, extra sparkly special cut like a jubilee or AVC or something.

Is there anything alluring about a princess cut that would be missing from one of these premium/branded square cuts designed to maximize light return? Do you think she's literally asking for a princess or does she mean she wants a square?

I plan to subtly try to get an answer from her, but I don't want to tip her off to what I'm thinking. Your thoughts are very much appreciated.

Also, I've never seen a AGS0 princess in real life. How are they?

hmm. most women do not know about jubilee/square cushion H&A/octavia/etc because these are unusual and not carried at many vendors. perhaps show her a video and let her decide? AGS0 princesses and Solasfera princesses are very nice (but not my personal cup of tea). These videos might help

I meant square. And I thought either a square emerald cut (which is what I got) or a princess was it.

If I had known I would have gotten a cushion probably.

She could be happy with a radiant. She could really want ONLY a princess. You never know until you ask.

yeah, when I found PS I knew I wanted 'square' but not princess, and I found a lot of other options!

Hi Newshound and welcome!

I agree with the ladies, there are so many different varieties of square cut diamonds that it might be best to make a few sneaky enquiries if you can....AGS0 Princess are beautiful stones and if she does want a Princess, definitely consider one of those.

My thoughts are that she "thinks" she wants a princess. But she may fall in love with another square shaped stone.

I wanted a princess. I have one. I upgraded to a larger size. I would have LOVED to have gone with a square H&A stone, but I wanted to trade in, and so the vendor I went with doesn't have those. He could source me one, but I wasn't 100% comfortable going that route.

So I think I'd just ask her flat out and show her some videos. I love my princess. They will always have a special place in my heart, but at some point I may want to try a square H&A. Oh and I guess having not seen one of those in real life was also not a comfortable factor for me.

I had a WF ACA princess and am getting a BGD Signature Princess. I will tell you that those two seriously outdo what you see in the mall type stores. So don't totally rule out a princess. They are classic and I do love mine! :)

Let me also say that princesses give off a sparkle that is different than a round, than an H&A or a square H&A. They have a "crushed ice" type of look as some say. So she may honestly LOVE that look. That's why it's best to let her see all the options and go from there. She may want that look and the smaller more pointy sparkles. It's hard to say.

This is very tough as she did say the actual word "Princess", but maybe if she sees other types of diamond cuts in person you might be able to persuade her to choose a stone more to your liking. Since you've already asked her what type of diamond she likes she's probably already suspecting a proposal, so why don't you choose the stone together or lay out some options for her? That way both of you will be happy!

Remember she might have a different taste in cut than you, ultimately you want to make her happy.

I would have used the term "princess" too because I didn't know of a square H&A at the time I was engaged. I'll tell you this - from someone who was not asked what they wanted - ASK her! You can still surprise her will the final product and the location and time of proposal. But ask her what she wants. chosing it together can be equally fun and romantic! :)

Long before I found PS I thought I wanted a princess and I meant a princess. I knew of other square cuts, but I thought it was the princess I wanted. Then I decided after lots of looking that I dislike the patterning of most princess stones so I switched to square radiant without the stereotypical "X" in the center.

Funny thing is I switched again to rectangular radiant after trying things on. I found I like the elongated look on me better than a square.

My point? When I said princess I didn't mean "square" I meant "princess".

You never know though, untill you ask. There are many square shapes out there and almost none look alike IMO (though some square radiants look a lot like princesses with cut corners)

You have to ask her what she means, not us.

Even if several of us use the word princess when we mean square, that does not mean she does.

When I said princess, I meant princess. They are still my favorite shape by far, and a jubilee or an AVC would not have been nearly as good to me. I know that I'm in the minority here, and that most on this board (and maybe also in the general public) love other shapes much more, but if your girlfriend said princess, then it might be what she truly wants. Of course, I could be totally wrong here, but just to be safe, I think that you should ask her.

If she does truly want a princess, you can try looking at AGS000 diamonds - they are definitely much more sparkly that other princesses.

Good luck! :)

Yeah I think it's hard to say. I will always be a princess lover. That's for sure. There are a lot of people on here that truly love princesses. My only point is that there were square stones that I was not aware of. If you do want a princess for sure get an AGS000. We will be here to help you!

When my female friends say princess, they mean a square shape. Most of them are not aware of all the various square shapes that exist. I know my friends were amazed when I showed them cushions (an the various types) along with asschers etc.
