What skill/ skills is/are needed to set a diamond? Someone please explain.Thanks!

steady hand, eye for detail, knowledge of stones and metal, the right tools, learned the techniques and tons and tons of practice.

Those are the easier ones the hard one is:

The patients to take the time to do it right the first time because you only get one shot at it if you want perfection.

What is the likelyhood that they could chip or damage a diamond while setting it, if it is an experienced person?

my local guy who sets somewhere way upwards of a several thousand a year hasnt broke a diamond in years and he does a lot of I1,I2 stuff for the mall stores.
broke a couple gemstones during that time.

So if you are dealing with an experienced jeweler there is not much of a chance of it at all?

I trust my bench jeweler with all my projects. But that said it''s always best to ask what the store''s policy is if a diamond were to be chipped or damaged while being set. Better to be safe than sorry.

I guess that my bad experience with almost accepting a diamond put in the setting crooked was not done by an experienced jewerler. Also the head was off the center of the setting.-- So when I find a business who will order me a setting and set the diamond, I need to ask re chipping the stone? Since the diamond is being removed from the setting-- will it be easy for me to see if the diamond has already been chipped?

When having a setting job done always ask who is responsible if it chips or breaks.
JM will likely cover it under your insurance policy if its insured with them. (ASK FIRST)

My guy takes responsibility for most diamonds but they have to pass his inspection first.

As too not worrying about it I dunno, I dont, but the second I say dont worry about it on here someone is going to come here crying you said not to worry and this guy broke my diamond.

It does happen from time to time but millions of diamonds are set each year without damage.

my advise have the person check it over under a microscope and unmount it in front of you if possible then check it together.
That way you know when the damage happened if there is some found after its set.

Maybe someone could post it here. It showed properly cut seats for the diamond and competent prong finishing techniques.
