Hello - I''ve been out diamond shopping for a few weeks now & as far as I can tell am at the point where, at the least, I''m hopefully not at risk of being totally ripped off. Yesterday I met with someone who seemed more reputable than most (was totally open showing me the rapaport sheet & let me take a copy of the GIA certificate home to think about this diamond, both of which are good signs compared to many I''ve met). I was hoping to get some impartial opinions regarding this stone. Here are the GIA specs:

round brilliant
7.34 - 7.43 x 4.52 mm
1.51 carat
depth 61.2%
table 60%
girdle: thin to medium, faceted
culet: none
polish very good
symmetry very good
clarity SI1
color H
flourescence none
comments none

Additionally, in his opinion, the cut is great for an SI1 and might have gotten a VS2 on a luckier day. The only visible inclusion under 10x is on the very outer edge, so it can be hidden under the prong. Its shown with a little red squiggle on right drawing on the cert sheet (feather) - I haven''t studied too many of these GIA sheets, but as I recall, many inclusions are usually in black to denote the more serious ones (although I could be wrong on this - maybe I just always saw black & white copies of them, not the color version). In any case, I could barely see it under 10x even when he pointed it out (in contrast to the other SI1 stones I''ve seen where the inclusions are plainly obvious under 10x). Also, the left drawing (showing top view) has almost nothing on it, the one squiggle is on the right drawing which shows the view from the bottom.
If it matters, I''m in NYC so have all of 47th Street nearby, if anyone has any advice regarding that.

His price is $8335 for this stone, and rapaport is at 69 per carat for 1.5 H SI1, so rap would be 6900*1.51 = $10419, so this is 20% below rap.
Any advice on how good a deal this is, how much better of a deal might be possible to find if I took more time, and any other things I should ask him about the diamond to make sure I''m not somehow being scammed would be greatly appreciated !

Thanks for your help

I'm not an expert, so I can't comment on the diamond. I can tell you that you will have better luck getting a response from someone who knows what they are talking about (in other words, someone other than me!) if you can get a Sarin Report on your stone from your jeweler. Without the crown and pavilion data (which is not on a GIA certificate, by the way) you really can't get a good sense of how this stone is cut. The sarin report will provide this.

I also strongly suggest reading the tutorial (click on "Tutorial" near the top of this page). And if you have time, check out the tutorial that Jonathan has on www.goodoldgold.com -- it's well worth the time investment believe me.

While I am no expert but looking at prices of similar quality diamond (H Color, SI1) listed in pricescope, the price quoted for your diamond may not be a bad price for a B&M diamond. Although it is best to have the crown and pavillion angles, as suggested by Arlington, to better assess the diamond.

But then again, you had the opportunity to actually see the diamond - so if it is a beauty in your eyes then that is all it matters.
