Hi! I am trading in my three stone Hearts on Fire ring because I would like to have a traditional one stone engagement ring with a wedding band!

Our jeweler is pretty pushy about Hearts on Fire diamonds and we hardly know anything about this whole diamond world!

My ring is worth about $10K and from my understanding I could get either a 1.0 carat Hearts on Fire or a 1.5- 2.0 carat regular diamond for the $10K trade in price.

Does that sound about right? Which one do you think would be the better choice? Do I go for the beauty and quality of a Hearts on Fire diamond again and get the smaller stone or do I go for the bigger stone (good quality of course) because only a select few know the real difference?

What are your thoughts?

Thanks, HappyGirl

You said you have a pushy jeweler and you don't know much about this diamond world.

My advice to you is this:

Don't do anything!!!!!

Read this forum for at least a month, preferably 3.

Then consider doing something.

BTW are you "trading up" your ring where you bought it?

Thanks! Yes, I am trading up!

HappyGirl,
I think the spirit of Kenny''s post was misread. I think all he was saying is that there is a wealth of information on this site and it takes time to digest it all...

I''m also a newbie and everyone around here has been nothing short of exceedingly gracious in responding to every question I have had...

I wouldn''t feel comfortable doing anything with a pushy jeweler. Correct me if I''m wrong Ideal Rocks, but isn''t HOF just a trademarked "ideal cut" diamond? Depending on the color, size, clarity you want, you may be able to get a beautifully cut diamond elsewhere for a better price. Or the same price, but a bigger diamond, better color, etc. Let us know what you decide!

I would definitely hang around here for a while, ask questions, read past threads that have oodles of information in them, and learn more before you make a decision. Knowledge is power, and it really helps to have that power if the jeweler you''re working with is pushy!

10 k for 1.5 carat -ish non-branded H&A ideal cut sounds good to me. Two carat may work too depending on grades, cut, etc. I am not sure what HOF does better than your 'usual' H&A cut...

that looks like this though the viewer:

The pictures are from GoodOldGold, but there are other sellers on this forum and beyond that can show the same, of course. Your jeweler may be one of them too.

It may be that if this jeweler is keen on his HOF, he may not stock (or at least show you off the bat) top non-branded stones. With some negotiation, you should be able to get such a choice, if you wanted it.

If you do trade up, than it would need to be from this one jeweler perhaps - otherise you may have a hard time recuperating the cost of the current three stone piece.

I second the non branded larger ideal cut stone.

Read the tutorial around here & you will discover how to define a stone with a very good make w/o paying for the "brand".

I'm sympathetic to Ana's and F&I's point of view. I don't think you mention, apart from size, either the other qualities you may have now or want then. But, with approx H and SI 1, like this one, being reported here and therefore being designed to be generally available to most retailers, and to provide to you at what could be comprable pricing, is something you should at least want to consider. Since it is documented only by GIA, until analyzed further, it's difficult to know better about its make, but comments associated with the diamond suggest it's both AGS0 & H&A.

Regards,

HappyGirl,

Where are you in Texas? How far from Huston?

Happy girl,

I have a hearts on fire diamond set in a necklace and although it is pretty, it is not as good as my ACA -a cut above hearts and arrow-diamond ring from Whiteflash. Jewelers push the HOF brand but through my idealscope it doesn''t look as good. Best luck to you.

HappyGirl...I''m sorry that you have a pushy jeweler...

I think you could get a bigger non-branded stone that would be magnificent.

At the very least, I''d INSIST that the jeweler call in some high quality ideal cut stones so that you can compare for yourself!

(Off topic..sort of...question for the experts): Do jewelers make more money selling a branded stone than they would selling a nonbranded one of the same retail value?

widget is right, compare as many non branded stones you can, make sure they are of same quality and cut and that the jeweler is not showing you less than ideal against the HOF cuts. Thats happened to me.

Widget I am guessing they get a cut I don''t know how much.

....ummmm....I''m not sure that the jeweler can help you significantly more than you can help yourself!

What do you think?
