What would you do if you couldn't do your current paid job?

It got me thinking the other day, just those philosophical days, i guess....

To be clear, i love what i do at the moment and would continue doing this for the next 20-30yrs.

So-What would happen if you couldn't do your current paid job because you got sick of doing it day in day out..not because you had an arm or leg amputated, paraplegic, loss eyesight etc....

I know there may be some retraining involved, but i think i could be a massage therapist..and no... i will not give happy endings!!!! :nono:

I seem to be able to locate knots in muscles when family have an issue with their neck, back etc... literally, the minute i put hands on the area, i find that knot.. it is uncanny.

I would be a celebrity's personal chef. I love to cook, and my advanced degree is in nutrition.

Love this question. I would volunteer with animals in need or open an animal sanctuary where all unloved and homeless animals could go and live and be happy and loved and cared for.

If I had to get a paying job that would be tougher. I love fashion and style and if I had more energy and could go back to school I might want to be a fashion designer. But that's not happening because I am too old and tired to go back to school with all the fresh faced energy filled youngsters.

I also love studying the human psyche and helping people who are struggling emotionally. I very much enjoyed the psychology classes I took in college and would be interested in doing that too if I had more energy and wanted to go back to school. I really wanted to be a psychologist when I was younger but got talked out of it by my family because they worried I would take everyone's troubles home with me. And they are probably right. I might be too sensitive to do this.

I saw the topic and I thought I had convinced you to become a beach bum!

I genuinely don't know what I'd do. I've always loved my area of work; I can't imagine life outside of a lab. I guess I could switch to research instead of clinical work, but that would be less fulfilling. All I can imagine doing is moving departments, or maybe transferring to a new hospital.

Massage therapy could be good for you - you could work from home and spend some extra time with the girls.

Stay home and eat Bon bons on a fluffy pink cushion.

Can I be a personal jewelry shopper? I mean if I still have to work it may as well be fun.

I'd go into the trade. And make every benchie up and quit, probably.

Re: What would you do if you couldn't do your current paid j

AME- what trade are you referring to..
a benchie = carpenter? or is it a jeweller's bench?

Re: What would you do if you couldn't do your current paid j

I'm not paid yet.. so this is preemptive! But I've officially been a graduate clinician for over a month now, and I am absolutely in love with my soon-to-be career.

HOWEVER

If sh*t hits the fan, and I can no longer do what I do.. I'd either do:
A) Management/business stuff since I am good at being "in charge" and taking charge. Maybe open my own small business? Related to my current field, or an area of interest?
B) Manicurist but only *if* finances was not an issue since it doesn't pay all that well.. but I enjoy doing nails so much! I do my friends for fun, and I love doing my own.
C) Wedding planner. I loveeeee doing wedding stuff. I had so much fun planning my own, and helping others plan out details. My BFF does event floristry, and just started dabbling in wedding planning. I hired her, but I did most of the research work! I just  that kind of stuff. I'd love to be an A to Z wedding planner for people who don't have time to plan their own.

Greg, if you're good with your hands, can you massage me? I've been hunched over my laptop for the last 10 hours. I need a massage!!!

Re: What would you do if you couldn't do your current paid j

Hi Madelise,

Wow- you have a few bases covered!

Sure- i can massage you... just fly me over and i can do it free of charge! :rodent:
I will get to play with your ring collection!!!

Re: What would you do if you couldn't do your current paid j

I would do so many things. I feel like a kid some days, like my dream is to be a cowboy astronaut ballerina

I think being a geologist would be incredible. Right up my alley. On the other hand I'm very drawn to work in health.

Re: What would you do if you couldn't do your current paid j

I'd like to be the jewellery cleaner for JAR.

I'd love to run a used book store... sadly, there are only a couple around now, so I don't know how any income could be made.

Re: What would you do if you couldn't do your current paid j

I'm way too old for law school but I think the legal business is interesting. I'd probably see what it would take to become a paralegal.

If money wasn't an issue, I'd learn photography and take pics of animals that need to be adopted. Or maybe have a doggie daycare.

Re: What would you do if you couldn't do your current paid j

I love weather--ANYTHING weather related.

Like, the why of it & how it all work, how does all interrelate, ie the clouds, temps, on & on....but I'm not so sure I'd want to be a meteorologist. I do want to take the weather spotter classes though, that would be interesting.
