What type of house do you love the most?

My husband and I were talking about what type of houses we love the look of, and I''m always drawn to capes (Cape Cod style). One cape can look very different than another, which I find interesting. My favorites are the ones with porches on the front and dormered windows upstairs.

The one type of house that I''m never really drawn to is a gambrel. I''m not sure why -- maybe it''s the funny shaped roof or something.

One of my favorite things to do is go on house tours and open houses, although we''re not planning on buying anything anytime soon.

What type of houses/architecture do you like?
 
Good question! I really love Victorian architecture, whether it's a rowhouse or a mansion. I especially love the Queen Anne style although I wouldn't want to deal with getting all that trim painted! I'm really not crazy about many newer styles, but I think split levels would have to be my least favorite.

I also love (old) Spanish and Tudor style homes. I looked at a few on my house hunt but they weren't in the area we wanted to be in so my husband and I passed. We ended up with a brick Victorian rowhouse that I love!
 
Bungalows with deep porches are my absolute favorite. Love, love, love them. I also have a soft spot for mid-century modern, though I don''t know if I''d actually want to live in one, I love the clean lines the spaces can have. I think part of my love for mid-century comes from some friends we have that have a great house they completely remodeled and is a *perfect* example of a mid-century house with a very "today" vibe.
 
If I could afford to own the type house I love, it would be a large center hall Colonial complete with winding stairway, a brass and crystal chandelier on the ceiling and original white and black tile on the floor. A couple I used to know owned one of these and it was beyond beautiful. It had five bedrooms, and all the rooms were nice and big. An in ground pool outside on a nice large piece of property. For me, it doesn't get much better than that.

This house was right down the road from Oheka Castle where they film a lot of the platinum weddings.
 
Arts and Crafts bungalows. Fortunately, where I live has quite a few. Unfortunately, they are twice (or more!) our current house budget.

1920s bungalows w/ big covered porches are my favorite. Colonials are up there on the list. I also love tudors. Our current house is 5 years old, our next house will be much older.
 
Mid Century Modern (post and beam construction), Post Modern (think tons and tons of seamless glass).
 
I''m with PurrfectPear on this. I don''t like the old as much as the modern, 60''s-70''s. They have some unique features, vaulted ceilings, multi-levels and other quirks that you don''t find elsewhere.
 
Zoe I am with you. Cape Cod Style.

But the way I feel now, NO more two story houses. Bleh, I am tired of ours.

I love the 18th Century! Italianates! Greek Revivals! Federals! Victorians with the whole eastlake spindle thingey going on.

I do like Colonials though, especially the traditional New England ones. They always seem to have sizable kitchens since that''s where all the action was and when they are redone, they are gorgeous! I did see a stone German colonial once though that really stole my heart. It was beautiful.

I love love love old homes!
 
I would love to have a large ranch style home with a very open floor plan, I currently live in a 100 year old story farm house, I am so tired of the upkeep and the 2 stories....
 
I love interesting but traditional architecture...like a Tudor or Victorian.
 
I don''t know what the style is called, but I like houses with those wrap around porches. I also like houses that have bump outs. Like I don''t like houses that have a flat front. I have always wanted to have a balcony off my bedroom too.
 
Cape Cod style is cute, usually small houses. Now done in a larger size I''d really love it. I also like the "salt box" style at least to look at. The lack of cover over the front door would bug me if I lived in one.

I like Arts n Crafts style and Colonials are very livable houses. I also like Mediterranean Style houses and Tudor.

And anything really really old like 1,000 years would be cool to visit.

I go on and on about how much I love the look of a Tudor home, the only caveat is that he really old Tudors have very weird floorplans that are not suitable for the way people live today. Our plan is to either find an older one and remodel it or do a new build but make it look like it''s been here for years.

Generally, I love any kind of traditional architecture.

Yep, I agree. In fact my MIL just went to a function in a renovated Tudor style home (not quite a mansion, but very large)...it''s used for meetings and such now. She said the same thing, it is a gorgeous house and she had always admired it from the outside, but she said she could never live in it because it was so chopped up and it felt smaller than it really was because none of the rooms ''flowed''.

If I could design my dream home, it would be very traditional on the outside (Tudor would be GREAT!) but have a nice traffic flow inside. I actually love our current floor plan, but I''m not in love with the outside.

Ditto! My husband and I are enormous FLW fans, and we''ve often considered moving to IL or WI just because a Wright was for sale in our "budget".

I use quotes around budget because we have a Texas new construction budget, and then we have a Frank Lloyd Wright dreamhouse budget.

Craftsman style, hands down. I adore them...!!!

There are a lot of them here in CA, I found an amazing PDF online that had all the history of Craftsmans and the diff types and styles of them as well as what the markers are to make sure it's a traditional style. Not just outside but inside too. Love them. We used to walk around our old neighborhood which had a mix of architecture and some really amazing Craftsmans. I miss seeing them. We are in a traditional ranch style neighborhood now.

Second to Craftsmans I love Tudors. Greg's friends live in an area of PA that has all these amazing older stone Tudors. I love them!

There are some amazing bungalows too that have an almost Craftsman look.
 
FI and I thought we LOVED really modern houses with completely open floor plans and when we actually started SHOPPING for houses we bought a big boxy 30 year old colonial. We LOVE our house, it''s very traditional with a formal living room (even though we don''t use it for that) and dining room and 4 bedrooms and it works PERFECTLY for us. We were first and foremost shopping for a large lot and we just happened to find our house and we couldn''t have asked for more.

We''re coming up on a year of owning it and we of course have ideas for upgrades but I think more traditional house styles are just much more comfortable and homey to us.
 
Our current house is my favorite one we have had. It is a small stucco beach cottage, about 90 years old, with a tiny yard. I love the fact that it has no stairs. I was sick of stairs, and their inherent dangers.

For me, there''s something to love in just about in every style. My heart goes pitter patter when I see an authentic style that has been carefully considered and thoughtfully designed.

If pinned down for an answer, I think I love Craftsman''s just a little more than others because I grew up in one that was built by my grandfather in the 1920''s.
 
Bungalows and Craftsman style homes are among my favorites too, but there don''t seem to be many where we live now. I''m from New England, and most of the houses around us were colonials, capes, and New Englanders (a cape turned on its side, essentially). I LOVE watching all the home shows on certain channels, just to see the variety in homes around the country.

It''s fun seeing how people choose to decorate their homes too. My husband and I probably love transitional furniture, I guess. We love simple furniture, nothing ornate or too heavy looking. The opposite of our taste would probably be country and ultra-modern. I appreciate modern pieces but I don''t think I''d choose them for our house.
 
Stone Hunter -- Capes really can vary, can''t they? We went to one home show (a cape) and we thought it was another type of house altogether because it had been added on to in such a way that it didn''t resemble most of the traditional capes we knew.

I also love salt boxes!
 
Mid-century modern ranches and craftsman bungalows are my faves. (We live in a mid-century modern ranch, I love it.) I especially love bungalows with very deep porches.

I also adore spaces that have been converted from other things into homes, such as the one room schoolhouse-turned-home I fell in love with. My parents have friends who live in a converted firehouse, it is VERY cool.
 
I love houses with big wrap-around porches in the front - I''ve lived in both ranches and two/three story houses and I think I prefer when there are two or three floors. When I was growing up there was this huge house that looked like a Victorian mansion with a gorgeous wrap-around porch that I absolutely LOVED and always said I wished I could live in a house like that one day. This is going to sound weird, but the house was painted this gorgeous shade of lavender/light purple - and it somehow made it look so elegant and almost like a castle. I really really loved that house.

If money were no issue then I''d love to have a Victorian style with gables and a huge wrap-around porch. DH and I are currently under contract to buy a lovely cape cod style home, but it doesn''t have the dormers. We could add up and put them in, but we probably won''t. I''m not a big fan of mcmansions or anything too modern. I like home to feel warm and cozy, but with clean lines and an uncluttered feel.

We have an old Tudor (which is my favorite) and we added on a kitchen and family room. I have been in a lot of Tudors (as they are common in our area) and some of the most beautiful houses on the outside are all chopped up on the inside. Luckily ours wasn''t, and with a modern (old) kitchen and great room, it is perfect. I hope you can find a Tudor to remodel in your area Penn.
