Hi everyone,

Yet another area where I need some PS expertise. I am eloping next month in a small ceremony at a B&B. My dress will be ivory and here is a picture: http://www.davidsbridal.com/bridal_gowns_detail.jsp?stid=3748&prodgroup=245

Now, I need to figure out what type/color flowers to carry. Here are the parameters given by my planner: "For flowers, you can either send me some favorite colors or favorite flowers and we''ll do the rest. The bouquets will be smaller - a few elegant stems tied with ribbon - not huge bridal bouquets."

I don''t know anything about flowers or different types. I know this is a broad question, but does anyone have ideas for what kind of flowers I should request that would fit these guidelines (I don''t really know what an "elegant stem" is). Would tulips work? I''m thinking maybe pink would go nicely with ivory? But I am open to other suggestions as to flower type or color. Thanks for any thoughts!!!

ok well first of all, i LOVE your dress.... it's absolutely gorgeous. given the romantic feel of the dress (with the lace and all) what about some roses and/or calla lilies. That is what I am getting. You can even throw some lilly of the valley in there. As for colors, I would go with creams and whites, and you can add any hint of color you want, like pinks, yellows or greens. Another option would be pinky/cream roses. Would be gorg with your dress!

My vote would be Calla Lillies too. Classic but not stuffy or boring IMO.

Thanks guys! It sounds like calla lillies and roses might be two good options.

And thanks Ilovethiswebsite for the kind words about my dress! It was kind of stressful to search (I went from thinking simple cocktail dress to figuring out and buying a full bridal gown and veil in about 48 hours!), but I really like it too and am pretty excited to wear it.

And thanks for the The Knot bouquet pics. Great ideas for colors, though not sure if it will be a lot different with "a few elegant stems" rather than a full bouquet. I should probably just pick one type of flower since it''s on a smaller scale? Maybe roses of varying shades of cream and pink? I''ll keep looking around.

I would go with the callas--they look really pretty with just a few stems.

I really like the colors in this bouquet. I wonder if it would look OK to have a few roses in cream and these shades of pink? Or is having only roses too common? Again, this won''t be a full bouquet, just a few flowers tied together. Any other flowers besides roses or calla lillies that I should consider? Thanks!!

I would check with the florist and see what she meant by "a few elegant stems." If she litterally means just a few stems then ya, calla lillies or bigger blooms would be the way to go. Peonies in full bloom would be great too! They are huge and would fill out the bouquet quickly. Also, Hydrangea would also look full. You could always ask her to make your bouquet bigger and just have minimal BM bouquets.

Hydrangea (left one has mini calla lillies too): http://images.google.ca/imgres?imgurl=http://www.townlakeflorist.com/sitebuilder/images/WFB_6-11-286_WFB_6-12-44-444x444.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.townlakeflorist.com/wedding_bouquets/WFB_6-11.html&usg=__wUmysXhG_hZylA1ixNFjJwrHuO0=&h=444&w=444&sz=19&hl=en&start=2&um=1&tbnid=fwikCSsGNY3EiM:&tbnh=127&tbnw=127&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dhydrangeas%2Bbouquet%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den

I think Calla lilies are one of the most beautiful flowers in the scenario you''re talking about with stems. These are 2 pictures of a girl I knew and her flowers - very simple, I like them a lot. Hers appear to be all yellow calla lilies, and her BM''s have some white ones mixed in. Calla lilies come in many colors, and your planner can probably get them in the shade of pink you posted in the picture above (by the way, I LOVE that bouquet and the colors!). But this gives you and idea of the calla lilies anyway.

This actually reminds me of the feel of your dress (which I also LOVE by the way! - SO beautiful!!)

Wow I forgot about peonies, and about hydranges!! They''d both be so pretty. They''re a much softer look than calla lilies, which remind me of more modern and simplistic feels. But all are beautiful choices, in my opinion. Just pick what feel you like the best.

Here''s a simple, beautiful one with peonies:

Oops sorry about that... here ya go, pretty in pink...

One last thought... haha, sorry I just love flowers so much, and these are right along with my tastes and preferences...

You mentioned tulips, and I think they''d be beautiful and so fun and simple. Here''s a tight boquet of tulips:

And a loose tulip boquet - so pretty!! (hehe I''ll stop now

Thanks so much for the ideas everyone!

I am leaning against calla lillies in favor of something a little rounder/softer, and these examples are hugely helpful to me! I think the tulips are very sweet looking too (thanks for those luvthemstrawberries!). It will be a winter ceremony so I''m not sure if that will impact availability of certain types, but now I have a few inspiration photos to show the planner for guidance. Thanks again for the help!!!

Sure thing!! Your style seems to coincide with mine, so I think it will all be beautiful! Please keep us informed with what you choose - I''d love to see what you end up with (with pictures

Sparkles,
I think you are on the right track. Callas are lovely, but bold and modern is not what you are looking for. In order to stay seasonal, what about Amaryllis? A few stalks would look lovely and won''t be as expensive as hydrangea (flown in from South America) or peonies (probably not even feasible as they don''t travel well). I hope this pic attaches, but you know these lilly like flowers, they are forced for xmass and come in every color these days. I saw a great table arrangement with Amaryllis and pussy willows once that was very romantic weddingy.

Tulips are probably going to be hard to get because they are out of season. I was a BM in a wedding where we had 8 rosebuds tied together with no other flowers, and it was beautiful. I wish I had a pic to attach, but it was pre-digital camera days.

I don''t think roses are too common, I think they are classic. I might get jumped on for this (and it really is just my opinion), but I think calla lilies are very trendy right now and will look dated in pictures. Roses on the other hand, will not. Again, though, just my opinion.

Thanks for the additional ideas! I do like roses and tulips, and the Amaryllis is a great idea swimmer. I think I am going to stick with some sort of cream and pink color combo, so we'll see what they say is available in those ranges. Thanks again and I'll let you know how it turns out!

Soft flowers can be hard to get in the winter unfortunately...no peonies, few tulips, etc. I think it''s a great idea to ask what they CAN get in those colors. Maybe english roses? Those are really full and look a lot different than the classic rosebud if you let them open a few days beforehand.
