Hello all!
Resized platinum engagement ring is now asymmetrical, ADVICE ASAP PLEASE!My fiance bought me a gorgeous diamond/platinum engagement ring from Costco, where all the rings come in size 7 and they do not resize. I took it to a local jeweler to get it sized down to 4.75. When I got it back I noticed that it is rather asymmetrical. The jeweler warned me that it might come back oval, which is fine, but it is that the actual band itself is now asymmetrical and the hole for the finger is a misshapen oval.

I mentioned it to him, and he said that he could make it more symmetrical by pulling it down over that round cone thing (sorry, total newbie, have no idea what it's called) but that it would make it more round, not necessarily more symmetrical, and that it would not fit as well because oval fits better than round. He told me that I have a couple days to think about whether I want him to try again on it, or if I just want to take it as it is.

My questions are:

1. Is it possible to get this kind of ring symmetrical (both the hole and the band itself)? What would have to be done to it to make it symmetrical?

2. If it's not symmetrical, does that affect the value of the ring?

3. How much more uncomfortable will the ring be if it's round versus oval?

4. Did he do a good job?

Thanks for your help,

Jillian

It can sometimes be risky to size a ring down that much. I don''t know what can be done, but I would certainly take it to a different jeweler. And I would choose a high end jeweler that probably works with a lot of platinum.

Definitely find a good platinum smith to see if any further reworking of that ring is possible to improve the obvious problem. On the otehr hand, the jeweler did warn you that it could be problematic. That much of a size down is one I would not contemplate for myself. JMHO

Wow! That is shocking!!! First of all, I feel terrible this has happened to your ering!! Second of all, that jeweller doesn''t know what he is talking about.

My ering is plat just like yours, and I also have a smaller size - 4.5....and my ring went down from a size 6. My jeweller told me they have a plat specialist that they use on a regular basis. I know it is a little more difficult to work with platinum than gold, and it is a little more costly - but that jeweller should not have offered to resize your ring if he doesn''t know what he is doing!!

So - my advice, call around and find someone who can resize your ring. Trust me, it can be done and be symmetrical. Here is a pic of my ring after being resized and it looks fine.

Hi Jillian

Congrats on your engagement!

Wow, it must be awful to have your new engagement ring and then it turn out like that

Is it so noticeable that you can''t wear it? I would have to exercise an enormous amount of maturity to not

so good on you!

There is a point to my post...I have a ring from Costco too and had resized from a 7 (big surprise!) to a 5.75. The jeweler did warn me too that it might turn out oval but he said that it wouldn''t be noticeable during wear so I didn''t mind. I took a pic to show you how it turned out.

Argh. It''s not working on this computer. I''ll try on my other one.

Here it is. I think it turned out pretty good and a good jeweler should be able to make your ring much better if not perfect. Good luck!

Sorry, that was HUGE!

bottom line bad workmanship.
To move it down that much he had to remove a chunk of ring and he didn''t get the cut properly centered.

When sizing a platinum ring with stones in it, you should get it laser welded. I am willing to bet this jeweler used 18K white gold solder. This is considered contamination of metals. It lowers the durability and purity of your ring. The right jeweler should be able to saw out the solder (no way to be sure you get all of it) and weld the ends together.

Further more, any joe shmoe jeweler should be able to EASILY put this ring on a mandrel (round cylindrical thingy) and round it out in less then a minute. A little sand paper can easily make a uniform shape, however, you will have to remove metal which is EXPENSIVE to loose. Even the little chucnk of platinum that was removed from sizing you ring is worth a decent meal.

No worries- it is fully repairable.

ditto, he didn''t re-size it properly. However, I agree with others in that it is generally best only to re-size rings a size or two at most.
