My wife is trying to figure out what to do with a ring from a previous engagement. She has two ideas: 1) sell it, and 2) turn the stone into a solitaire pendant. I prefer option one for purely selfish and practical reasons, whereas option two isn''t a bad idea -- at least it would make use of it.

My question here is that if she were to sell it what might she expect? She ran by one place today and got a $400 quote for the whole thing (950 platinum solitaire -- not sure how much platinum is in the band, but platinum has doubled in value since the ring was purchased seven years ago). I''ll give the specs on the rock for anyone who might be savvy on what it might fetch. I understand that it''s quite difficult to sell an engagement ring and get what was paid for it. It has not been appraised, but I know the purchase price if anyone is interested.

Round Brilliant
Measurements: 4.43-4.49 X 2.74 mm
Carat: 0.33
Clarity: SI2
Colour: I
Cut: Ideal
Polish: VG
Symmetry: VG
Table: 57%
Depth: 58.1%
Girdle: 1.2% (Thin)
Culet: None

The info above was taken from the IGI cert.

Any ideas what it''s worth in terms of resale or trade-in value? Any other comments? Thanks.

I would try to keep the stone and set it into a pendant and then try to recoup something from the setting sale. The stone won't be worth that much in resale...the setting may be worth resale to a vendor or so...if it's worth $700 to the vendor for re-sell, then maybe they will give you $300 or so for the setting, if they feel they can re-sell it easily. Depends on the setting too, wear and tear etc. Anyway there are various options, so just depends on what you want to get out of it and if you mind her keeping the stone for a pendant or something. Good luck!

i buy used stones all the time for personal use. i would give you 150 for the stone. then i would have you sell the platinum for scrap.

a pendant is sounding good, eh?

You''re just never going to recoup enough in the resale market to make it worth it in this case...since she would never be able to buy a similar diamond for what she''d have to sell this one for. A pendant is what I would do...

Thanks for the consensus. Sounds about what we expected. To clarify, this wasn''t a classified; just looking for some info. Peace. DJ
