The diamond in my e-ring has been in my family for 4 generation. It is more than one carat. The stone is set high because the diamond is cut very deep (see picture). It is in a Scott Kay setting and the band tapers as it reaches the stone. Initially, I wore this ring with an small eternity band, also a family piece, that had a small crack in the band. My husband and I had a deal that when the band cracked, I would get a new band. The band cracked and the day has come to do something with my ring.

The diamond does not have very good white color and against pure white diamonds looks somewhat yellow. The ring has a lot of sparkle as well as sentimental value, so I would like to wear it and enjoy it. I am open to side stones and or a wide band so that I would not wear a wedding band.

I am concerned both that high quality diamonds may make my solitaire look yellow and because I have small fingers, larger rings sometimes overwhelm my hand.

I would appreciate any suggestions regarding settings, side stones, and wedding bands. Thanks so much in advance!

Your ring is lovely. And how precious to have something handed down for generations! What an heirloom.

How about a 3-stone ring with coloured sidestones? I can see how you feel about the colour being affected by whatever is adjacent to it...

You could do almost any colour. (blue? purple? hmmmmmm, something cool coloured would set off the diamond beautifully). I think anything in the warmer tones would may not work, but you never know...

Or, your jeweller could perhaps source sidestones to match the colour of the diamond?

Just a thought. But once again, how wonderful to have such an heirloom in your family.

You have a lovely stone with an antique color and high crown. Instead of trying to hide those two endearing attributes, I would play them up. I'd put that diamond into a platinum ring, with a bezel surrounding the round shape of the stone, but in a square halo (with clipped corners and concave edges) of the finest blue sapphire baguettes tapering/fanning out from the center stone, with a white step cut diamond shaped for each corner of the halo. The halo would be set as low as possible to your finger, on a dainty shank of white diamond horizontal baguettes. The stones of the halo and shank are channel-set with fine milgraine detail along the platinum borders. A slender platinum wedding band with milgraine but no diamonds would be the perfect match in a non-matchy way, while preventing diamond overload.

Thank you so much, everyone for the advice. Thank you espically for the kind words about my stone. I know it is not "perfect", but it so dear to me!! It is a wonderfully fun problem to have when you NEED to buy jewlery!!
Thanks again!!

It sounds like a poem to me. Beautiful!

Amen to that! I think it''s wonderful that you have such a special heirloom.

What about just setting it in a wide band, either with a 1/2 bezel or tension set?

Do you like the antique look so eloquently described by Rx, or are you more into modern?

Almost any size diamond side stones can be found in warmer colors, if you want to stick with diamonds and do not want a sharp contrast between the center stone and any accent stones. I know you can get even melee in J color. Maybe even lower.

Any of the vendors here should be able to find stones to suit your reset.

Heavenly stone! Just gorgeous! I love that high crown and that warm glow--it''s so romantic. RxTechRN2B''s setting idea would be breathtaking. Or an Edwardian period setting, either a reproduction or a real antique. I set my heirloom L color Old European Cut diamond (probably about the same age as yours, or a little younger) in a platinum repro Edwardian setting from antiqueengagementrings.com, where it looks right at home. Another thing I considered for my stone--maybe you''d like to think about it too--is rose gold. I have a feeling rose gold could look very nice with a warmer stone. It''s not yellow, so it wouldn''t add to the yellowness of the diamond, but it''s not white either, so it wouldn''t make the yellowness show up more in contrast. Whatever you do, congratulations on being able to wear that beauty.

I think an antique stone like that would look lovely in an antique-style setting, like glitterata mentioned. Antiqueenagagementrings.com was the first thing that came to mind when I saw your stone. It looks pretty large on your hand; do you know the carat weight? Would it fit in one of these settings?

geckodani - Thank you for the pictures of the setting. I LOVE!! the second two. Having a picture to look at is so helpful!

glitterata and jstarfireb - you have hit the nail on the head. I need to look for an antique setting. And I agree with you, jstarfireb, I have always felt like the diamond looked too big on my had; kind of like a golf ball out there in space.

jstarfireb- This website is soooooooo helpful. I am sending you a cyber hug!!

I feel like I amm getting closer to what I want. Thank you so much everyone!!

Experts-

I have been, joyfully, obessed with this site and e-rings. I have been gettinng an education and really having fun! I found this ring and like the way the diamond is set, with 4 prongs, and the side sapphires. http://www.sohogem.com/ps-402-2-40-58-105.aspx?pagenum=1&SortType=0. I would subtract the bezel set diamonds on the band.

I have a few questions:
1)Because my diamond has a deep cut, do you think this will work?
2) Any thoughts on a wedding band that might match this?
3) Could I have tulip prongs with this or is that only for a solitare?

Thanks so much. I have definately been bitten by the pricescope bug!

What a lovely setting!

To answer your questions, if you''re having it custom made, which it sounds like you would be (removing the bezel set diamonds etc.) then they can make it to accommodate the depth of your stone. As for the tulip prongs, I think the detailing on the side might interfere, but you''d need to ask a jeweler to be sure.

As for a band, what about something like this? These are from Overstock.com.

Or, you could just wear it by itself. I think it would stand alone beautifully.

I think that colored sides would be nice as well. Sandiegolady, you should post your ring here and show her how beautiful your sapphire and diamond ring is. I think not only are sapphires a great choice but for some reason RED would be wonderful too. Rubies!! Either sapphire or ruby would be durable for daily wear. I think the color adds to its vintage look. My grandma''s ring is the same color and I love her ring. But I agree with the other posters who said that color sides would distract from yellow tint and make the stone look whiter.

First thing is--- I love that diamond! One day when I win the lottery (and after getting a pendant and studs to match my ring) I want to buy a beautiful old stone like yours in a nice candlelight color and set it in rose gold for a RHR. It''s good to have goals right?

So naturally I love the rose gold idea!! But of course rubies and sapphires would look lovely too. OOOOH do rubies AND rose gold!!! OK got a little excited and I''m sure whatever you choose will be great. But if it were me, I''d play up that gorgeous color, not hide it. And be sure to post pictures when you''re done please. Happy shopping!

Keli- Thanks so much!! This site has increased my love of my ring!!!

I do have another question. Would it be possible, to replace the head of my ring (the prongs and the stone) but "reuse" my ring band? So to be more clear, could I add sapphires or rubies (good suggestion) to the side of my diamond and then have that re-incorporated into the band?

I hope that makes sense.

Thank you so much!!!!!

I have no idea on that one, but maybe someone will. I think you can switch out the prongs, but I''m not sure about adding more.

I know that they do make "heads" for rings if you just wanted to replace that (I''m not sure if that''s fully what you meant).

Anohter option to consider because the ring has semential value to you...you could have them melt down the gold and recast it. that way you still have the gold that has been in your family for years but in a new look just for you!

Just something to consider so that way u can keep the value of it (and save some $$$ because gold is $$$$)

That''s a good idea red rose!
