What to do with a teeny tiny blue stone?

When my mum''s aunt passed away she left some jewlery to my mum who passed some on to all the girls in the family.

I chose a YG ring set with what looks like an aqua or a very pale shappire as the center stone.
The ring set is totally not my style but the center stone is such a pretty periwinkle blue colour that I would like to use it in another peice of jewlery.
The stone is an (aprox) 5mm x 3.5mm oval and would really like some suggestions as to what you would do with such a small stone.

Also is there any way for me to tell what kind of stone it is?

4ever...what about a Petite Lotus from Sally??? I think that would be a lovely and dainty little ring!

Or if you want a bit more of a statement, you could see if you can find a halo setting from LOGR on ebay.

A lotus would be really cute! I might see if I can find an example with a similar size stone. I do like some of the LOGR settings but I don''t think somthing that flashy is right for this stone.

I never saw the lotus IRL but the stone is small so I think a halo ring should optically enlarge it. It looks like a sapphire at least in your photographs, so I''d appraise or at least identify it first. It is old, hence, no Be, and it may be more pricey than you expect.

I think a nice halo with a pave band would be adorable.

On paper, a halo sounds nice but you have to be careful that the melee diamonds are not too large as to instead dwarf the center stone and instead of making it look larger, it might end up looking smaller. Looks like the ideal candidate for a stacker, an open bezel (collet) or even a Lotus setting.

I''m not actually certain that it is particularly old. My great aunt had 5 sets very similar to this one, each with a different center stone. (At least) One of which was reasonably new as it came with the torn out page of the jewllers advertisment of it which also stated that it was a synthetic emerald. One of the sets looks to be a shappire but is very dark, almost black.

For all I know it could be cut glass! but I''d say unless it was her orignal set it is likely to be a very inexpensive gem.

I may eventually have it looked at to try and identify it but can''t afford to incure the cost at the moment.

I have one in every colour of the rainbow so another isn't nessesary, but thank you for the creative suggestion

Chrono- From my very limited coloured stone knowlege I thought bezels made some stones go darker? I LOVE bezels, and this would be my first preferance but I don't wan't to change the colour of the stone. Would an open bezel be different?

An open bezel helps maintain the tone better than a full bezel. I prefer a collet set style like Crasru's pendant or AJ's James Meyer umbalite ring. See how the pavilion is totally open?

I assumed that''s what you ment by open bezel but I also thought it would still darken the stone more than a prong setting. I know nothing!

I already have a diamond problem (the ''problem'' being getting the money to buy them!) let''s not go giving me a coloured stone problem also.

The stone is currently in a halo setting and 4ever says it''s not her style, so that pretty much rules them out.

If you want to make the stone visually larger once set in a ring, I believe that could be done by setting it east-west, as opposed to north-south (standard way along the lenght of the finger). Bezel is another good idea for making the stone seem larger, and an open pavillion (lower portion) is a great option for maintaining as much of the original color as possible. I think even a semi bezel would make it look larger than set into standard prongs, and if it would be set into a simple band-type ring with a straight shank (that doesen''t narrow towards the back), that would make it easy to stack and mix with other rings. White metal i.e. silver would make it both, inexpensive to make and a nice color combo with the stone.

Thanks Ma re, your right that I'm not interested in a halo for this stone and have been thinking about an E-W setting for it.

I think step one will be to get someone to identify what it is, I'm not sure if one of my local jewlers who does sell alot of coloured stones would be able to do this or if I really need to send it to a greading lab to do.

What kind of metal to use would depend on how much money I want to spend on it, which depends on what exactly the stone is.

I like the idea of an E/W semi bezel very much. I know a PSer has a diamond in a setting like that that I''ve drooled over.
