Hi,

I''m about to purchase a diamond from an online vendor. I''m happy with everything so far, but I have one dilemma. Let''s say I bought my stone and ring from a chain jeweler such as shaneco or robbins bros. I currently live in San Diego, but if I moved somewhere, say to Canada, I could then find the nearest ShaneCo or Robbins Bros and have my ring cleaned, just like I would in SD.

What do you do if you have a private jeweler and move? do you have to pay for ring cleaning services? Does anyone know what those generally cost?

cleaning and checking services are usually free as they want to build up a good relationship with you and while you are waiting for the ring to be clean you might browse their wares...

‘Free’ cleaning and inspections are a profit center for the jewelers and nearly every one with sense will do as much of it as possible. How so? First, it brings you into the store and it causes you to wait around for a while as it cleans. As Stone pointed out, this is what salespeople are for. Second, it firmly establishes that they’re the experts and it gets you into the habit of going there instead of to the competition for your jewelry needs. Lastly, if they discover a problem of some sort, it’s highly likely that you will choose them to do the repair and it’s certain that they’ll at least get the opportunity to bid for the job. Nearly every community has a jeweler or two who would love to take over these duties for you. Feel free to check ‘em out. At the very least your stuff will be clean and you might actually find something wonderful while you wait that you never would have spotted otherwise.
