What to do in Vegas this time around?

Hi All,

We're heading down to Vegas soon and it's been a long time since we've been there so I'm looking for recommendations for shows and activites.

For shows, we'd want something fun, but we're not circe de solei (sp?) type... we did watch the medieval jousting one of the times we were there and liked that. There was food and "mead" served as our medieval meal while we watched the action. Anyone know of something similar to that?

Also, any fun things to visit? It's just been so long...I'm looking for reminders of what is entertaining down there from those who've recently visited.

Also, good place for an anniversary dinner? (We are flexible, but I prefer a steakhouse or something like that rather than Italian or something carb-heavy and nothing very expensive - not more than $30/plate.)

Thanks!

When were you last there? I'm trying to think of things that are new. I go every few months. What about Cirque shows doesn't appeal to you? There are several that I like, and my favorite show, Le Reve, isn't a Cirque show but was created by the former director of Cirque. I've seen it three times. LOVE it! I really like Ka at MGM also. I've seen that one twice and would see it again. The Titanic exhibition at Luxor is also really neat. It's about $30 pp.

Excalibur still has a medieval-type program I think. I've never been I've just seen billboards.

As far as a steakhouse dinner for an anniversary, if you want no more than $30, you'll have to likely go off-strip. My cab driver last week recommended the steakhouse at Tuscany Suites off-strip. I have never been there but he said it was a place the locals go for steak that's not too expensive.

I'm not sure when I last went...I thought it was 2001, but then remembered we went after and stayed at the Venetian, so more like 8ish years ago.

I saw the Tuscany Suites when looking for a hotel. I'll check out their Yelp reviews. I didn't realize a steak dinner would be so $$$. Maybe a burger place? :cheeky: Or, I'll talk to my DH, too. I came up with the dollar amount on my own. We're on a budget, but he may want to spend more/have a different idea. We usually do some light gambling with the slot machines, so maybe we'll win and can go all out!

I'll see about the Titanic Exhibit. We stayed at the Luxor one of the times there, but I don't remember which exhibits we went to. Most of our photos are of us climbing all over the Egyptian Statues.

Ha yes unfortunately food on the strip is getting more and more pricey. My DH is a steak guy and it's easily $70 for his plate. One place I have come to like over the years is Olives at Bellagio. It's actually considered one of the more casual restaurants in that hotel but the food is really good and it's not as expensive as a lot of the places. It's not a steak restaurant but they have a good one. I usually get seafood of some type. Killer bread!!! :) They even have an outdoor patio so you can watch the fountains while you eat, but the wait is a lot longer for those tables.

Do you have a hotel yet? There are usually good summer promotion codes.

Okay, thanks!

Yes, we have everything all booked. I picked a resort hotel that is on the stip but not a casino and is non-smoking. Hopefully it's not too bad. ;))

what type of food do you like MC? I love watching Top Chef so I plan on doing a few Top Chef places. Craft in the MGM which is owned by Tom C (head judge on TC) and then a Thai place which is supposed to be the best Thai in the US (featured on TC). I can't remember the name of it but I can look it up if you want something spicey!

MC, my only time in Vegas was Spring Break my senior year in college, so I was on a relatively tight budget. Our "big night out" was at Mon Ami Gabi at the Paris where we ate outside and watched the Bellagio fountains. I think my bill was about $50, but that included a cocktail, soup, a steak frites entree, and dessert. And I can STILL taste the french onion soup 7 years later! Here's the menu! Enjoy your trip and happy anniversary!

If it's Vdara, it looks nice!

Craftsteak is on our list to try, but at $300 for the average meal for 2, I've been putting it off. Probably more than OP is looking to spend.

There is another Craft place in the MGM I think it is called Craftwhich or something like that and it is all sandwiches. Supposedl to be awesome!

It's 'wichcraft and it is good.

There is a lot of Cirque type shows now, I've been to several of them, and they are all very different. I've also been to the Tournament of Kings twice, and honestly, while cheap for dinner and a show in Las Vegas, it was fun, but the food was really not very good. And no mead anymore.

Stand up comics, showgirls, topless shows, magic shows, dance and/or music performances are kind of what you're going to be limited to. Mirage has a zoo type of exhibit, as does the Flamingo, Mandalay Bay has an aquarium, not sure what else has that kind of stuff right now.

Vegas is a food mecca now. If you want really good food, you're in a damn good place to find it. LA, NYC and Las Vegas are all top notch for finding some great places to eat because of the concentration of very good chefs.

You mentioned steak, but not anything else. $30 for a steak is probably lower end, but not completely out of the ball park. When my husband and I have gone to Vegas before, we planned some things to the hilt, and just winged it for others. There are a lot of really great burger places now, because the gourmet burger has gotten so popular as a trend. BLT Burger, Burger Bar, etc. Those will probably cost about $30 per person. I'm not a huge steak person, so those I know less about. At the SW Steakhouse in the Wynn, for instance, a steak can cost you $58-120.

https://www.visitwynn.com/documents/SW_Steakhouse.pdf

Vegas has a ton of stuff to offer, but it pays to do a lot of research!

In the Miracle Mile plaza, is an Earl of Sandwich - they are very well made 'subway' sandwiches and my DH and I would both eat w a drink for about $15. Its not steak dinner, but it will fill you! and they have a wide variety of healthy alternatives. If you are staying at the Vdara/Cosmopolitan/Aria/Paris it is very easy to get to.

As for entertainment, I've seen quite a few shows in my 15 trips there (no... I don't have a Vegas addiction problem... what are you talking about???  ) and during this past November trip w my Ds #2, I took him to see Absinthe just outside Caesar's Palace. It was hilarious- very bawdy comedy and the sock puppet girl was worth the price of the ticket FOR SURE!! It was well enjoyed by a 22 year old - keep that in mind if you consider this show!

Carrot Top at the Luxor is insanely hilarious!! we went for years avoiding that show thinking it would be stupid --- but I've now seen it 3 times and nearly split a gut laughing so hard!! Again, DS also thought it was out of this world funny!

We did the Titanic Exhibit on our last day and he also enjoyed that - it is a very moving, emotional thing to walk thru there and see the items they have brought up. When we went, the 'jewel's' were just a few pieces in a case (tie tack, cufflinks, maybe 1 or 2 rings...) in November, but I'm not sure when the jewels the ship's purser was holding, goes on display in LV. Even aside from seeing the jewels, it was a well done presentation.

If you are going to see a hypnotist, I'd recommend Anthony Cools over Marc Savard. Another "note to self" on the hypnotist thing - if you are interested in voluntarily being a member of the show, do NOT have too much alcohol or other 'recreational substances' before the show. It won't work on you, if you really want to participate. DS learned that one after an exorbitant amount of beer was consumed leading up to the show!!

Yes, I'd love to know the name. DH loves spicey food...I like Thai but not super spicey, but we can have our dishes made to different stars... I really love every kind of food, but the issue is I can't have dairy so some resturants are almost always out b/c they cook everything in butter or have cream sauces. We often go out for Mexican and I get a burrito w/out cheese, so I would say no Mexican since that is our most often eaten out meal. I like pubs a lot...good beer and high-quality burgers, but not sure if that will taste good in 100 degree weather. lol

Cool! Thanks. I'll look at that one. We kind of drink a lot so that is one reason we need to keep the food portion down. hahaha!

We'll check out the sandwich place maybe. Yes, $300 is way more than I'd spend on a meal...that's more like our entire food budget for the two days/nights. :))

Stand-up would be fun. We've been to a couple of Chris Rock shows so we're very casual when it comes to what the person says. lol We've heard pretty much everything out of his mouth. Any recommendations?

We didn't see the Mandalay Bay aquarium last time for some reason. I can't remember if it was timing or if there is a line. Is it worth seeing? We have an aquarium up in Seattle that we go to a couple times a year and I just went a few months back. I think it was around $50+ for my kids & me, plus $20 for parking, so I'm okay w/paying more for that if it's nice one.

I will look into burger places, then, since the steak prices are so high. I had no idea! (good thing I asked) Last time we went, we did a lot of buffet eating, however, I was hoping to do one nicer meal. If we did the wichcraft sandwich for one meal and then a burger place, that may work fine for us and then do a buffets for breakfast. The hope is to get a nice meal in a resturant that doesn't have 99% of the food items having dairy or too heavy on the pasta.

Fifteen times?! Have you stayed at a different place each time? lol

I just looked at a map of the strip. You know, I think we'll do the aquarium since we're close to it and I know that it'll be relaxing. We're also close to the Earl of Sandwich so again, that might be good. We'll be drinking too much for any sort of hypnotist. This is a couple days of KID-FREE time and I plan to be especially irresponsible. Possibly pass out after dancing around in a fountain w/out any clothes on. Huh, I may end up being the show in Vegas. ;))

Enerchi you're not at addict. I got back from Vegas on Saturday and am leaving again tomorrow! THAT'S an addict lol!

MC, if you are interested in a buffet during your stay, DH and I really enjoy the more "high class" buffets. There is the one at Wynn, Wicked Spoon at Cosmopolitan, and Bacchanal at Caesar's Palace. They will run you about $40-$50 per person plus tip but you get SOOO much. Look them up on Yelp and you'll drool! Bellagio used to be up there too but we've stayed and eaten there a few times in the last year and it's going downhill (the buffet, not the hotel).

HAHAHA!! Oh, I'm hoping to see *THAT* on our next trip!!

We stayed at the Luxor for the longest time, then I have been with friends on interior design trips and we've stayed at New York New York, Venetian, Palazzo and liked them (V & P more than NYNY) and now, we just stay at the Aria - soooo perfect there!! I love the smell - I walk in and it immediately makes me feel like I'm "HOME" - not that my real home smells like that at all, its just a place that I love and it conjures up nothing but HAPPY memories!! I LOVE las Vegas!!! "Disney for Adults", that's what I call it!

On the buffet theme - the Aria Buffet is on the concourse level and just had a reno - its fantastic now - all sorts of different food stations and keeps you full for hours. All the sunday brunches are more money - its because of the mimosa's/sparkling wine they serve.

If you are going with the intent of wild and crazy, two parents on the loose w no kids, you might want to look in to Zumanity by Cirque. Its at NYNY and is considered the "sexy" show with nudity.... just sayin'!! I haven't seen it... but you could report back to us if you go!

My husband just grunted as I told him the plans thus far. He only reacted when I said something about Carrot Top (lol)! He's not going for that one. I'll going to print out yelp reviews for good places for each category (buffet, sandwich, etc.,) and take it from there. Do the "high class" buffets have mimosas, etc? That would be good for Sat. morning.

LOVE Zumanity! And it's one of cheaper Cirque shows. It's raunchy but also reallllllly funny. Have a few cocktails first to prime you lol!

They do have alcohol but it is extra. The pricing structure is similar to this:

Weekday Breakfast: $20
Weekend Brunch with mimosas: $40
Weekday dinner: $40
Weekend dinner: $50
Weekend dinner with alcohol option: $60
OR they just have a bar and you order alcoholic drinks as normal but soft drinks are included.

I know it sounds like a lot of money but when you consider that a sit-down meal will be the same price, it's a good value to do at least once. Also, I like to eat a BIG breakfast (buffet or something), skip lunch or have a pretzel (the pretzels upstairs at NYNY are SOOO yummy), and then have a big dinner. It saves money. Also there are food courts throughout the strip that have Subway, Wendy's, etc. if you just want something cheap and quick for lunch.

hahaha - not sure about the nudity w/the DH. He may freak out or may be okay. We watch Game of Thrones, however, it's on the TV...not quite the same....

I'll add the Aria Buffett to my Yelp research. We won't be able to do a Sunday brunch as our flight leaves early. REALLY early... So, it's all about Fri night and Sat. morning/day/night!

If I do end up in a fountain, people will run for cover or put me on Youtube.

It's not quite fulllll nudity lol. Think nipple tassles/merkins hahah. There is one scene with a VERYYYY attractive guy in jeans that would probably make your DH squirm though lolol.

That dude's muscles have muscles. The entire show is just outrageous. It's not your typical Cirque show - I've been to Mystere, Criss Angel (save your money), O, and Zumanity twice. If you are child free for the weekend, I'd go see it. I'd bet that if he's ok with Game of Thrones, he'll be fine with Zumanity. There are these two women in a champagne glass, and they are basically nude, but it's incredible what they do...

And if you're already going to be within the vicinity to Mandalay Bay, I recommend http://www.burger-bar.com/ highly. They have a build your own milkshake part of the menu...with it's own list of liqueurs.

Ahhhh....love Vegas.

He might be scared that we're plotting out the Vegas weekend with all this stuff in mind. He is fine with GoT, but that is TV...he wasn't thrilled when I saw Magic Mike, but that was entirely for gals to watch, and GoT is for both, I suppose....the champagne ladies may be of interest to him... He is saying, "to play it by ear," but I'm going to check all this stuff out. hehehe

He said something about just drinking.

There is a good chance *I'm* growing more wild in my older age than he is!

MC. Can you resend your message--- I have nothing in any folder. Thanks! :))

There is an other folder that you have to click around inside your messages (and it's sort of hidden) to get into. Okay, I'll figure it out how to contact you another way, if my message doesn't show up...
