What size studs for the lady!?

There are soooo many good options of ideal cut stones if you could not limit yourself to that one jeweler. Besides the ones Madelise listed, here are some more:

The G SI2's might be okay, but with her tiny earlobes, I'd honestly rather have the stones a tiny bit smaller but better clarity and just overall great quality.

[/quote]Lady has a square cushion engagement ring (~1.5ct). And I "think" lady said she preferred square diamond studs over rounds (and square cushions are a little bit inbetween, especially in a 4 prong setting).

LISTEN TO YOUR LADY!!! i just so happen to be one of those people who DO NOT LIKE rounds! if she said she likes "squares" then by all means, GET HER SQUAR(ish) studs.

i have .35 ct (each) princess stud earrings and they are PERFECT! personally, anything larger than about .34-.4 is too much for me. if she isn't flashy then stick with the .three somethings. go with your first instinct.

the cushions sound like an awesome compromise between square and round.

YOU CANNOT GO WRONG :wink2:

wow, great feedback that's making me think about things more.

I need to figure out the timing. I think I can buy myself till Thursday evening.
I will still go in Monday morning to look at the local jeweler (who I sincerely think is pretty good).
It sounds like some others think the 0.5 ct round may be too big for her ear lobes as a "first" stud (i.e. not being large/flashy)
And it sounds like I could be right that a 0.38ct square cushion may be too small for her (since square face up smaller than round)

Then there are other sizes/cuts I haven't really considered, like a "regular" cushion:

and then I am running against the clock as well. (now I know why strip mall jewelers exist!! :knockout: )

Upon thinking of what she may like/not like, I'm still not sold on rounds (although maybe she said she liked round, I don't know!). square cushions will look roundish once set (especially at that small size). And I'm thinking she might really like cushion studs (more round than square, but neither).

You can't buy cushions without pictures and they are going to be hard to match as a pair with the possible exception of August VIntage Cushions from Good Old Gold.

I would also listen to your lady. I do not like round cut diamonds at all for myself. I would be very disappointed if my husband bought me the most beautiful cut pair of rounds when I wanted square. I have a radiant cut engagement ring and I prefer my diamonds to "match" in shape. I had 1CTW princess cut studs for a long time that I recently upgraded to about .7 pts in each ear. I did so mostly because the cut on the newer stones were better and I decided to go up a smidge in size since I could. A well-cut square stone will sparkle madly. Also, they really don't flip that much. I have a pair of 0.25 princess cut that I wear in my top hole and they do not spin. They only come out to be cleaned and I never really have to fiddle with them. Screw-backings help. Finding a well-cut princess or cushion may take a bit more effort but I would do so if that is what your lady prefers!

Realtanu, I'm beginning to think it might be better to include your SO in the purchase? Idk, this is an expensive purchase, and you don't seem sure as to what she would like, and she might be disappointed if you guess wrong. I know a surprise seems like a lot of fun (I'm assuming you are planning on surprising her?) but if it were me I think I'd like to be able to pick out my own studs. Just my 2 cents!

It would be nice to do it at dinner with a single gesture. I think that would be fun.

I will think about ways to include her... not sure if it will be possible without visiting a store and I would rather not do that on a Tuesday 5PM. Not as fun as giving a gift at dinner..

Ok, fair enough!

I guess what made me comment was that you mentioned you "think" she wants square stones - I was just thinking it might be nice to be able to verify that and be sure - if you think she will be happy with rounds, I still vote for them. On the other hand, if you are pretty sure she'd prefer square/cushion stones, maybe it's best to go with them so that she won't be disappointed. It's just really hard to say for sure, if you're not sure! :cheeky:

realtanu, are you still thinking of studs? I just posted some earshots in my smtb thread.. and thought of you. I have similar shaped/sized ears as your pretty lady.

here.

athenaworthprelovedombdanglies.jpg

the very top, 2nd piercing is a 0.13ct stud.
the top of the dangly is ~0.25ct
the bottom one is ~0.5ct

I hope this helps you get a gauge on proportions! Just keep in mind that the 0.13 is sitting flat on my ear, vs the dangles are set in a buttercup, and are higher and closer to the camera, and further from my lobe (or lack of lobe :wink2:)

Wow I never responded on this forum to thank everyone for their advice! It's been such a whirlwind time. In any case I went with 0.41x and 0.43x rounds for the lady. They are PERFECT. I think today we could go with 0.5x+ for her, but then I think she would have a tougher time wearing the stones every day. I went with higher cut/color and am GLAD I DID! Glad I didn't go 0.3xx!!! She has small lobes, so I think 0.4xxx was PERFECT for her, for what my original intentions were at least!

She LOVED them!

That is GREAT news!!!! :appl: I am SO glad you came back to tell us! You made a great choice!

Oh good, I was hoping there would be a happy ending! :appl:

That's great! Happy she loves them. And if she ever wants a different or bigger look you can always surprise her with earring jackets!
