My 1 carat is my daily ring.

It gets enough attention in the uk.

When do you wear your three-stone? It is really criminal not to wear that every day you know. I am putting you under citizen's arrest.

I am in agreement with Dreamer on this one!

LOL ladies!

I'm afraid it I can't wear it at work, both because my employer would not be happy, and because I often have to give bad news to patients and a big ring just doesn't seem very discrete.

I do wear it at home and when going out. I must admit it doesn't get the use it should but I do love looking at it golum-fashion every day :cheeky:

What do you do, generally? If it bad financial news you give people? Just curious. ETA: I think you need to change jobs so you can wear your ring :rodent:

Hi dreamer, sorry for the delayed response. I'm trainig as a radiation oncologist and treat patients with cancer.

Sometimes I have to tell people they are going to die and there's nothing we can do for them.

they probably dont even notice and i'm just paranoid about it, but it seems rather insensitive to have a big rock on my finger when i do that. i prefer to wear just my 1 carat ring, with a plain band when i'm married. ::)

if i had to give bad financial news, i probably wouldn't wear any diamonds at all! believe me, my 1 carat is the biggest (and sparkliest) diamond among all my colleagues already. it's quite enough for me! :))

The answer to this question really depends on a lot of things. As others have been saying, your social circle is important, the culture at your job is important (and the kind of job), the part of the U.S. you live in (or if you live in another country) and your own personality, (whether you are shy or not), as well as, to some extent, your age. On this forum you will get advice that skews towards the larger side of what is generally acceptable, since this is a diamond forum, made up of people who love diamonds more than the general population. It may be that you live in one ofthe areas where over one carat is common and doesn't make you noticed to a degree which is uncomfortable It may even be that you live in an area or are in a social circle where over two carats isn't all that ostentatious. This istill sn't that much of the U.S. however--though you might have begun to think so if you've been on Pricescope a long time.

On a purely practical note, even the 'diamond the size of a nickel' that one poster mentioned would be perfectly practical for daily wear, in the sense of not bumping into things or scratching yourself, if it was in the right setting (set low, probably in a bezel, in a wide band). we think of certain sizes of diamonds as being large not because they are really so big objectively, but because we know what they cost. Objectively, a three or four or five carat diamond is not that big. Not that long ago, wealthy women routinely wore fifteen or twenty carat stones in rings (of course, they didn't do housework in their rings. But if YOU can afford even a three carat diamond, at current prices, you can definitely afford household help, and probably have it already). These sizes of stones are on view mostlyin the 'royal jewels' thread (they still aren't common in the celebrity thread, even.)

One other thing to certainly consider--the shape of the diamond. I have the impression that you are talking about round brilliants. If you are not, there are definitely some shapes that are less practical for daily wear in the larger sizes. I love marquises--but marquises over 2 carats look like lethal weapons! Princesses (except if they are cut-corner) have edges that can be knocked off also. In my opinion (it's probably not everybody's) rounds over a certain size may be safe but sort of start looking like marbles on your fingers, which may be why, for instance, Elizabeth's Taylor's giant Krupp is an asscher cut.

You are very thoughtful.

OP sorry about the threadjack! Though it is sort of related since my questions were around the idea of what is appropriate to wear when!

Are we talking round or oval? Cause I'd stay at around 2 carats. If you are talking something else... like a cushion or a step cut... 3 carats. If you are talking about something spready like a marquise or a pear... around 1.5 is the limit for me.

That's with sidestones. I prefer 3 stones or 5 stones. I like finger coverage, but not all in the center stone. If we are talking ideal rings.

Honestly I think it has a lot more to do with how much you think you would be happy with and also what those around you wear the most.

I agree with Gypsy, it depends on the shape of the stone. I have a .79ct round, but I voted for 1-1.99 ct because ideally I would love to have something closer to a 1.5 ct round. For a cushion I would go a bit higher...

Black Jade, my guess is the stone was well over 5 carats, probably closer to 8-9. It is only practical in my opinion if you do nothing
all day. It would not sit up straight on her finger, either it was sized to big for her or just too heavy. It was in a simple basket with
a three mm. band. I can spot a size accurately at 50 feet! :naughty: Where I live large diamonds are not that uncommon, a diamond
that someone wears of that size in everyday life is. I have seen large stones at charity events I have attended, just not around town.

Diamondseeker - Thanks for the advice. I carefully looked at my prongs and I see small dents. I'll move my e-ring to my right hand, away from my wedding band until I find a spacer band. I'm hoping to find a thin plain spacer like you linked or possibly a thin band with diamonds. I need to be price conscience though since I just bought the new diamond 2 months ago.

Oh good! I am so glad you caught it before it really did damage! I am sure you can find something that will work!
