What size scares you?

My future fiance is a school teacher in north hollywood, not the greatest neighborhood but she loves working with disadvantaged and impoverished children. She's already told me she doesn't want a stone larger then 1 carat because she never wants to take it off but is afraid to wear something bigger in that neighborhood. So I intend on giving her a 1ct diamond with pave everywhere. She's also said she wants a nice diamond bridal set for the wedding day instead of a big rock. (when I say bridal set I mean a matching diamond choker, earrings and bracelet to wear for the wedding and also to pass down to children, etc.) so I'll surprise her with something nice like that before the wedding.

I live in a fairly rural part of Japan, and my .55 center is huge around here. Even when I lived near Tokyo, though, I rarely saw women with any diamond at all, let alone large ones. I never take mine off except to clean it. I''m always accidentally banging my ring on something (I''m an elementary school teacher so always running around) and knowing my luck if I had a bigger stone I would break it in a second.

For me, even after being on PS for a long time I still would be uncomfortable with anything larger than 1 ct. My husband should consider himself lucky!

To me, I feel very comfortable wearing my .74 around pretty much everywhere, even on the metro bus in LA...and the crowd isn''t great on the metro LOL. I don''t wear it to sleep, working out, or cleaning, but this is just for durability reasons.

I think I would feel uncomfortable wearing a 2+ carat stone *anywhere* in LA. I''d be fine at work or around my neighborhood, but I would start to get uncomfortable at night or in shady neighborhoods. It would also be a little more inappropriate with my modest relatives in my midwestern home city. I will probably upgrade to a 1.5 in the next couple of years, but wait until I''m a little older to go any larger than that.

I wear my 1.6ct all day at work, but take it off once I'm home and showered. I don't wear it when I'm going to the gym, playing squash or gardening. Also, as I'm based in the Middle East, I take it off before going into town to barter for expensive goods. In my experience, a nice diamond ring encourages a shop keeper to keep the prices high, so best to act diamondless!

What size scares me? I think a 3ct RB would scare me, but having said that, it I wore it, I'm sure I'd soon get used to it and not want to take it off! For now though, the price of a 3ct scares me!

My ring is a round three stone, 1.5 center, with two .6''ers (one on each side). I have a 1 carat channel band that I wear with it. I wear it everywhere! I just ordered a 2.03 halo (danov) from James Allen! Haven''t seen it yet, but I''d venture a guess that I''ll have no problem sporting that pup just about everywhere! Can''t wait to get it!!!!!

My philosophy is this.... provided it''s insured, it''s meant to be worn and enjoyed! That being said, can''t wait to get my 2 carat halo, and in my wildest dreams, I''d be sporting a 3 carater around town (yeah....I''d better keep dreaming - or win Powerball.) Husband is OK with spending some $$$ to keep me happy, but he''d definitely consider the cost of a beautiful 3 carater a little over the top!!!

If you can''t wear it, what good is it - who cares what others think as long as it makes you feel all sparkly inside!

I think that the answer to this question really depends on where you live and which part of the country you are from. I live in the New York area and most women here want a 1.5 carat or larger diamond. Size matters to them. I was visiting a local upscale jeweler last week who used to carry HOF diamonds. When I asked him why he didn''t carry them anymore, his response was that they just didn''t sell well because at larger sizes these diamond are very expensive and most educated consumers don''t conseve them as a great value. He also told me that HOF are very popular in other parts of the country, such as the midwest, where the norm is to wear a .50-.75 carat diamond. There they sell well.

ebonykawai, what size fingers do you have? I have 4.5 size and I once told my husband I don't think I could wear anything bigger than 1.5ct. I think after that it would look funny on my hands. I asked him what he thought was too big. He replied 2.5, afterthat it looks bad.

Just under a size 5. I always tell the jewelers "Make it a skinny 5, under 5 but over 4.75", LOL. It sounds like 1.5ct would be good for me. I'm so glad to get this input!!

My e-ring has a 2 ct center marquise (3.9 ctw with pave). I seem to be in the great minority here but I don't actually wear it that much. But it has nothing to do with the size. If I had a .5 ct, I still wouldn't wear it often. I never wear it to the gym or the stable. Never around the house (if I'm wearing it, when I get home it immediatly comes off). Really, I only wear it when I am out to dinner or maybe shopping, though not even always then. I guess I am so picky about it, that I just want it to stay looking brand new. Wierd I know

. It does attract enough attention but I don't mind it at all; I am not self conscious about it.

The more I thought about this thread, and my original post, the more I thought I was "kidding" myself. I would be more than comfortable to wear a ring like Diamondfan''s ...

(cackle cackle) Another comes to the dark side!!!

I would seriously wear any size, just not all the time to all places. Meaning, I personally feel okay wearing a honker, but not on the subway at midnight or to go dig in the garden...I actually like taking off all my jewelry when I get home...very liberating feeling, and I hate sleeping with any on.

Truthfully, I''ll wear any size too!

I''ll wear any size.....as long as i can lift my hand with it on

Yeah.... I''ve got to qualify my answer too. As long as the ring isn''t uncomfortable to wear... I can wear any size, the reason too big scares me is because I have a bad habit of taking my rings off if they aren''t comfortable, and my memory sucks so I''d be afraid of losing it. But I have an 11 x 11 garnet cushion... and I could easily wear that... or a diamond of similar size all the time if the setting were properly made and the ring didn''t spin or bug me. If it isn''t comfortable though... I will lose it.

As for discomfort... I''ve pretty much always lived in or near large metro areas, SF, DC, NY so a larger size probably wouldn''t make me self-concious.

I have to say though, that I don''t think I could justify the expense of a diamond larger than 3- 3.5 carats, regardless of how much $$ I have. Although, admittedly I''m in my early 30''s so that could, and might, change.

Is there a size I wouldn''t wear? - No

Are there neighborhoods I wouldn''t venture into? - Yes

I figure that if someone was out to get me for a diamond, they would do it for a half carat as easy as a 2 carat. What''s the difference to them - let''s face it!

So I would wear my stuff most anywhere I go, but I would watch just where I went. That goes with or without bling on!

yeah, dropping the price of a car onto my finger is bad enough, but dropping the annual income of 5 underprivledged families would be too much for me to bear.

Oh, gosh, I admit I''d wear DiamondFan''s ring too! You can go larger with an emerald cut than a round.

No size "scares" me, either. I say, "Bring it ON, babeeee!"

I live in a small town, have a size 4.75 finger and wear a 2.36 RB, and (having DSS baaaaaad

), it looks very small to me. I aspire to a a 3-4 carater... but I would happily/gladly/proudly/ecstatically (sp?!) wear a LARGER diamond, too. I'm not interested in frozen spit (of ANY size)... but if it were a beautiful, well-cut diamond, I say the bigger the better! 5 carats? 7??! 10??? OH yeah, baby, YEAH!!!

Totally agree! If wearing my diamond makes me feel unsafe in a certain area, I figure I probably shouldn't be in that area to begin with. There have only been a couple of times where I've flipped my 1.5ct e-ring around, and mostly out of silly paranoia.

The only time I'd be cautious: I'm in the psychology field and occasionally work with lower-socioeconomic groups. There, I'm much more comfortable wearing modest jewelry... but only because flashing around a large diamond ring wouldn't do much for establishing my credibility as a counselor they can relate to!

But any other time, I'd wear any size, really.... I think past a certain point (3 or 4 carats) it might not be overly believable on me... but I'd wear it anyway!

I would WEAR any size - but like she said in the OP about wearing it all the time... I think the ring I got is pushing the limits of size in terms of being able to wear it 24/7 which is a quality I *want* in a left hand ring. A RIGHT hand ring that is worn periodically or frequently but not constantly could be 15 carats!!!! hehehe but for practical use, every day, doing dishes, cooking, doing laundry, washing the kids, wearing all the time? 3 carats aproximately and that''s probably pushing it LOL
