What should I see when I look at a round diamond from the side?

My FI just returned with our heirloom diamond which is currently in a 1970''s setting and we''re going have it put into something I like. It''s quite dirty still, but I think I''m seeing something- PLEASE let my eyes be tricking me!!!

My question is, what am I supposted to be seeing as I look at the diamond from the side?

I think I see a horizontal line through it before it gets to the point at the end. Bad description, sorry! Is this normal? Should I be worried?
