I was going to do platinum prongs, but I was told 14-k gold may be better due to the gold being harder. The setting is a 4 prong halo - which do you think would be more durable? THANKS.

Platinum is preferable.

It''s a halo, meaning that the centrestone''s prongs are going to be directly impacted rarely - the halo will bear the grunt of it, and the pressure will be evenly distributed by the inner arc onto two or more prongs, so metal choice doesn''t matter nearly as much, I''d wager.

14k is "harder" to scratch but is much more brittle than plat, which is why plat prongs are recommended - they''ll conform to the diamond and still protect/hold it rather than just snapping off.

On rings I wear a lot, I have had better luck with platinum than gold.
