I was wondering what types of prongs people like best. There are so many to choose from. Feel free to add pictures of your favorites.

Aren't split prongs usually 8 prongs?

Now I don't know which to answer!!

BTW I recognize that avatar!!!

NOTE: I voted split prong because I adore the Leon Mege pieces...like little fingers!

6 prongs are my favourite, by far, on RB's. I think they enhance the roundness of the the stone, and make the diamond look a bit like a snowflake, or a flower.

I prefer 4 prongs to 6 on an oval, though. And I like emerald cuts when they're gypsy-set.

I chose 4 prongs.

I do agree with Canadiangrrl that the 6 prongs make the stone look rounder, but I like that (in my opinion only) the 4 prong lets more diamond be seen.

I would consider the Leon Mege split prongs just cause I find them dainty & non-obtrusive to the stone, yet a bit more secure than 4 prongs.

Too much metal-- and the diamond won't show

I'd say the 4-prong is the way to go!

Just my 2 cents!

I picked 8 prongs....

This style in particular posted by Kayla 17...

I like the way these prongs are shaped and the fact that they seem slim and get more narrow towards the end of the prong tip which would help expose more of the stone.....

i'd love to have mark morell's heart shaped prongs but in a 4-prong style!

hmmm, I chose split claw prongs. I also love Mark Morrell's heart prongs!

By the way, what are fishtail prongs ?

And do you happen to have a picture of it?

The most notable feature of a fishtail setting is the unique prong system. When viewed from the sides of the setting the prongs resemble fishtails. Each prong begins from a wide base that becomes narrow as it extends up. Then, as it approaches the girdle of the diamond it tapers wider again, and splits into two sections similar to a fishtail..... /idealbb/images/smilies/wavey.gif

Bezel, of course.

Actually, my love is the girdle setting (does this have any better name?) and then gipsy settings come next. I would have liked to see "claw setting" on the list given the stryking example shown above

Wow, those tiny eight things look DANGEROUS to boot!

Geez, that was hard. I ended up choosing 4 prong, but I could have just as easily chosen bezel or tension. I could also have chosen 8, but I only like them in certain antiquey looks. Probably my very favorite is the semi-bezel, but luckily that wasn't a choice!

I like simple four prong the best, but also like most others and am getting my first bezel diamond in two weeks

The only style I don't like is tension. It's a very distinct modern look and it's definetly not me. In fact, I think tension rings looks very masculine.

the look of the split prong. There is something so classy about those prongs. Kayla 17's ring looks gorgeous!!! I will post the pic of the 8 prong as soon as I find it in my saved pics ---somewhere. It is different from the split prong---they go all around like the 6 prong but there are 8 of them.---A little too busy IMO. I forgot to include the heart shaped prongs----next poll---hehe

thought this was interesting... bump!

I chose 6 prongs because that's what I've loved for 11 years... I would feel like a traitor to choose something else in the poll.

In about a week, I'm getting my new Memoire setting which is 4 prongs. I'm excited to see "more" diamond but recently I've read that 6 prongs make the diamond look larger and rounder. If I don't love the 4 prongs, I'll get a 6 prong head when I get my upgrade stone.

And since I joined PS, I learned about those awesome split prongs. Wow. They are so beautiful. Someday, I will have a RHR with split prongs. Or maybe turn my "not so pretty" inherited pear into something with split prongs. I just

them!

I like the four prongs for a cleaner look on a round. Split for an asscher

I like 4 prongs for a rb, but am liking the split prongs as well. I like to see more of the diamond and less metal.

whaddya know, my answer is still split prong a year and a half later..like the LM pieces, like kayla's!
2.gif

now i realize that there are actually EIGHT prong settings that are not technically split looking but set as 8. the 'split prongs' are more like kayla's ring. technically 8 prongs but I view split as being like the little fingers.

here''s a pic...i dont love this look, i had this on my regent originally and it totally dwarfed the smallish stone and the prongs were like spikes. the LM split looks much softer.

Here''s another type of 8 prong setting for RB.....it will hopefully be mine soon!!!

I love the split prong. Plus I was looking at the Elizabeth Taylor book and noticed her split prongs her 30+ carat asscher! OMG!!!

One of my co-workers has a 5 prong on her RB--it looks like a star--very neat!

Well, there is also a safety issue to consider. I had a 2.05 D-VS2 Oval set in a 4 prong mounting. One night at orchestra rehearsal, some guy slammed a door on my hand, it bent one of the prongs, and my diamond fell to the floor. I sat through 3 hours of rehearsal with a diamond in my pants pocket. After that incident, I always set my center stones with 6 prongs. I believe Wink also concurs as he and I have discussed this before too.

6 prongs looks best for rb''s,4 prongs makes the stone look too square.

What does the gypsy set look like with an EC?

What does the gypsy set look like with an EC?
Something like this... (sorry for the grainy picture
8.gif
)

The stone in the ring below is quite large - obviously covering the finger. In any case, the band of the ring will have to be wider than the stone to have it set like this. Men's rings are set like this quite often.

GipsySetEC.jpg

Round brilliant diamonds have eight-fold symmetry (there are eight similar "slices" making up the shape of the cut) - so eight small prongs look very much in tune with the stone: one prong per slice
1.gif
, IMO. "Small" is the key word...

The stone in the ring below was about 2 carats. I have seen smaller ones set like this in older rings. The prongs can get very small (the tips well less than 1mm wide) and not necesarily split like these. However, to support such tiny prongs there must be some metal bridge close under the girdle of the diamond. This, the modern "Tyffany style" settings do not have. The "Cartier" solitaire is somewhat like that - basically a basket setting. These settings need to match the stone quite well - I am not aware of ready-mde version aside Tacori's antique revival versions

Another sort-of gypsy set - you could call this "bezel" as well, since the walls of metal around the stone are quite steep. I am not sure what technicality makes "gypsy" and "bezel" different in designs like this one.

Diamonds by Lauren makes a gypsy ring somewhat alike (this one)

Hope this helps for ref.

hmmm, what if you have both. bezel and prong=(halo?). heh! well I voted 4prong.
