What kind of dog is this?

mco312--I am so glad you got him!!! I told my hubby if you didn't that Id want to fetch him but it'd take a plane trip to get there! I love his gaze!

Unfortunately, marking seems to be more of male trait than female, in dogs. He is also adjusting to his new surrounding, which is a huge adjustment to these little guys.

My best advice, is to take him out about every 2 hours, or as soon as he wakes up from a nap--as in immediately!

Our Jack is very good, he wakes me up in the am been 430a-530a every morning:shifty:. We do the bathroom & morning feeding then. Since he is 13, his needs are pretty predictable, & we don't have any problems. So his in/out times are early am, then 8a, 10a, 12p, 2p, 3p, 4p-5pish, & so on. One thing I can tell you is as the day goes on, the need to go out more frequently increases. I'd increase the frequency by about 2p-3pish.

Our breeder says consistency with the bathroom/feeding schedules is key, as the schedule will regulate his system. Are you letting him graze or do you pick up the bowl after he's eaten what he wants? You may want to not let him graze, thereby controlling his eating schedule. Good luck, it takes a lot of patience to potty train a fur baby!!

You might try a belly band in between times of taking him out to potty. At least that way he won't be marking all the time. He's adorable and I would give him time to adjust to your home.

They look happy together. Are they female and male? Hopefully he'll get the hang of where potty is supposed to be. I've never had a male mark inside the house regularly. There's usually a reason that can be fixed with just letting him out regularly. My guys also go out every couple of hours whether they want to or not! None of the 3 will ask to go out. They will sit silently by the back door maybe and then just go if they aren't "noticed". :cheeky: Chihuahuas can't hold anything in.

@lyra yes, they are boy and girl. We are taking him out every few hours and praising him each time he potties. :)

@sarahb we feed both doggies on a regular schedule, so hopefully that will help.

@pinkjewel any recommendations for belly bands? I plan on ordering the pet parents one on Amazon.

Wow- it's ben a really long time since I've ordered any. My only male dog passed away a few years ago (he was almost 18 years old!!). I can't even remember where I got mine. I used to be in several dog forums and I think I probably got them from a recommendation on there. Sorry I can't be more help- but I can say they were great for saving the sides of my furniture upholstery while he was learning!!

eta- ok, just looked at the belly bands. They look fine. The ones I had, though, you just added a sanitary napkin on it, rather than the whole thing having to continuously be washed. I didn't have a particularly mischievous dog, but I can see some dogs wiggling out of any belly band and ripping the sanitary napkin to shreds, so maybe your type is better!

Both dogs are so healthy and happy looking! Congratulations on your new addition. The belly band is a reasonable alternative to buy some time, but nothing is better than the training he is getting from you from the regular going-out times, and the praise.

Thanks @pinkjewel - I think you can add the sanitary napkin to the ones I am looking at - that will be our plan for faster clean up!

And, thanks @springerspaniel - We are committed to training the little guy to potty outside! We definitely do not want the diapers to be a permanent thing. DH and I really like a clean home, so pee everywhere sounds terrible. :errrr:

He keeps having accidents in his crate, which makes me think he just can't hold it 8 hours or is still scared/nervous...

He is a sir fluffen Chewbacca's nephew terrier

Little dogs can't hold it 8 hours. I don't think any dog is comfortable soiling their sleeping area. It may be worth a vet check just in the rare case there could be a physiological problem, or an infection.

I think a belly band while he's getting to know the ropes and rules of the house. I have a girl (and girls can mark just as much as boys!) but yeah, you might need to have a vet check just to rule out UTI.

I do P&P prior to crating if I leave the house and I do a last call right before bedtime. (thats MY bedtime...lol) my dog has her own ideas about when betime is...which for her is roughly 8:30. I get her up about 10-11pm for last call and she generally sleeps through the night.

Oh and in the crate do you have something in there that smells like you? I do this if Ihave to leave for extended periods of time, which I think helps her cope.

Poor little things! They have tiny bladders. I was really, really, really surprised when I got a Newfoundland, because they are big everywhere. And that includes their bladders. And my big boy never had an accident after his first day in my house...even though he had never been housebroken since he had been a show dog and lived in a kennel before we got him! Believe me, we never tried to test our poor dog. He just never seemed to have to go out. Unlike our Lab, who used to rouse me at 4AM every day, he never woke me up in the morning!!! Any old time was good enough enough for him to go out! And yet no one enjoyed marking every tree, bush, and clump of grass more than Griffin when we went for a walk! As Donald Trump would say, his equipment worked great!

Sorry for the threadjack. ;))

Thanks for all the feedback!

I just spoke to my vet and we will get the little man looked at to rule out a UTI/crystals. He manages to lift his leg and pee outside the crate so we will also get a different crate for night time use. And, we are going to try and let him out at 2 am to break up how long he has to hold it and then gradually extend the period of time.

Our Emma, who is twice his size, goes out right before bed and doesn't go again until 8-10 hours later sometimes. She is not a morning person!

BOTH your dogs are beyond adorable and they look so happy and so loved! Thank you for adopting! It takes a special person to do so. I'm sure "Sprocket" will be neutered (if he isn't already). Forgive me if I missed that part while reading through the posts. Yes, my Ernie, a 5.5 yr old male Havanese is neutered (has been so from a very young age) and when he is in a new territory, he has the impulse to mark initially ('til we correct/redirect him, which doesn't always happen).

Neutering will help. And as others have stated, once your pup adjusts to his new surroundings, the marking will end and/or lessen. A belly band is a great idea when "Sprocket" is somewhere you absolutely do not want him marking.

I love the name Sprocket btw!

One of my neutered male pugs (Franklin, the black one in my avatar) marks at other people's places unless we stop him. He was an only dog for 18 months until we got his brother, Barry who doesn't pee mark at all as he seems happy to defer to his big brother. They both last overnight/8-10 hours easily with no accidents despite being quite small dogs (22lbs if I've done my kg>lb conversion right) so your Sprocket should be able to last overnight with no problems.
You might want to take him back to basics like he's a puppy and take him out every hour on the hour, after eating, sleeping and playing and of course first thing in the morning and last thing at night. That way he can learn the routines of the house. You might also find he doesn't like peeing outside when it's cold - the pugs are terrible for holding on instead of going outside when the weather is bad.
Good luck! I hope there's nothing wrong with him and he stops this behaviour once he's all settled in. He's a gorgeous pup.

I've had two male dogs (both rescues), one of which did not get neutered until he was at least least two years old. Neither of them marked in the house. Outside was a different matter... lol

Hopefully, he's just trying to adjust to his new environment. It's takes them awhile to show their true personality sometimes, and to really feel secure in their new house.

I've had 3 small dogs (2 Boston Terrier, and a cocker spaniel). It seemed like it took my Bostons a loooong time to house train them, but once I did, we were awesome. They were able to go up to 10 hours, if needed. Also, always a chance that Sprocket was an outside dog... maybe.

@tlfiore - Ernie is SO stinkin cute!!! Sprocket (since he has only had this name a month or so, we are considering changing it) is recently neutered, so hopefully that will help with the marking. The belly bands are on their way and should arrive today! Phew.

The only accidents we are having are night time ones. I woke up to let him out 5 hours after his last night time break and he had already peed in the crate... He is in a wire crate so he simply raises his leg and pees outside of the crate. Although the clean up is not fun, I have to admire his cleverness  We are going to try a different kind of crate tonight.

@Platinum-blonde - I think it is fairly likely he was an outside dog based on the what the rescue said. But other than the night time peeing and poor leash manners, he is pretty well behaved. I think, deep down, he is a gentleman and just needs some time to get the hang of the house rules. :)

@foxinsox - Last night we had a big rainstorm - neither dog was happy about going out!

We’re into day 2 of a big summer rainstorm here - the only way to ensure compliance is if I go outside with the dogs and stand in the rain with them! :lol-2:
On the bright side, it’s not cold and they get their business done quickly!

He's such a cutie! I'm glad that you adopted him, Sprocket and Emma look like they were very ready to be together forever!

I just wanted to say some of the posts on here had me cracking up!

Our Emma girl is the same way - she hates rain and the cold! Luckily she can be bribed into going on the grass with treats.

Thanks! Wish us luck with the potty training!

Much luck with the training. He'll come around. I think you're right, he was probably left outside and just doesn't know the rules yet. He may be marking because there is a female in the house. I know that outside, the dogs always pee wherever the other has peed, as a dominance thing. Irritating! Even Lola does it, so it's more than just male over female. All our dogs are neutered/spayed.

Good luck and congratulations on your new family member!!!! So wonderful!!!! :appl:

I don't know how I missed that the adoption became official, but I am delighted! I had been looking at the picture of Emma and Sprocket together, and thinking that they were having a trial time together to make sure they got along. Whenever I looked at the photo and saw Sprocket's happy little face, I just died, hoping that he and Emma would work things out. I never realized that everything was finalized. I couldn't be happier than when I was told that the adoption of my daughter was finalized! Hearty congratulations! I feel like crying with joy!!! What a happy little boy he is. And what a great sister Emma will be to him!

Big hugs,
(((Emma and Sprocket)))
Deb

Thanks everyone!!

@AGBF - the adoption technically isn't official but we have every intention of keeping him. Last night was our first accident-free night! ☺️ Also, we re-named him Teddy.

Oh that’s such fantastic news! Good boy Teddy!!

Update:

Teddy is doing great. He is not having accidents but we are still keeping a close eye on him. :))

Teddy is a fast learner. He knows the following tricks: sit, stay, lay down, up, shake and come. We are working on "leave it" and leash manners. He LOVES other dogs but sometimes has a tantrum if he cannot go over and sniff the other dog. It is pretty embarrassing when he freaks out. I'm working on his impulse control when another dog isn't friendly or can't stop and sniff.

THANK YOU all for your recommendations and encouragement.
