hey everyone. i have recently decided that my gf would absolutely love a tension setting. i attached what i have in mind, but i don''t know if you''ll be able to see it. my question is, how good will a lower quality diamond, such as an g,h,or i look in one? i thought i had read they make diamonds look whiter, and was wondering if anyone with any experience or past views of various colors in tension settings could give me some advice. thanks a ton!

I would not call I color diamonds "low quality"... besides there is some distance between those G and I color grades.

The one thing that stands out about this setting is how it leaves the stone exposed from all possible angles. A great way to show off an ideal cut, but also inclusions... Since you would need a VS stone for the setting anyway, this doesn't make much of a difference though.

With the side of the stone visible, I would prefer a diamond with a high crown for a tension setting, so that some part of shows above the contact point with the setting.

The ring looks very cool

Just about perfect for a surprising, fancy cut... at least in my imagination.

thanks for the input valeria. i didn't mean low quality really, just a lower color grade. do you think an I color would look good in it? what kind of dimensions are you talking about in terms of high crown and suprising fancy cut? i don't really have any imagination in diamonds cause i don't know enough about them and what they can look like :-) thanks! anyone else that wants to give me an opinion is welcome as well :-)

Hi questions... There are a lot of great companies on the internet that make tension settings but I used a guy called Bruce Boone. He did a tremendous job making my ring and his turn-around time was absolutely fantastic. He started on a Tuesday with the stone and I had the completed product on my finger Thursday of the same week. I used a large stone
that was an E color and according to one of the top appraisers on PS a truly top stone. Great numbers and an excellant buy, ideal cut AGS0..

Bruce Boone's rings are made from titanium. He's known to do really great work.

I'm planning to get my wedding band from him.

sfanta...what is that thing in your picture? just curious. i can't tell if it's a dog or what...no offense, i am just curious. thanks for the website though, i am looking at it as we speak!

They say that tension rings are supposed to "look" two colour grades higher. I wouldn't go /too/ low, though, because although those J and K stones with great cuts face up white, you can still see yellow from the side.

Maybe you could find two stones you really like, if you're shopping online, one in a H and one in an F or G, and have them sent to an appraiser, so you can see if it bugs you. I think you should be safe down to an H, unless you're colour-sensitive (I seem to be able to see colour, but it doesn't bug me too much... there are some lovely peachy-tinted N and O stones even out there that are lovely)

Edit: oh, and a small caveat about tension settings -- I loved em too, but I have tiny, tiny, tiny hands, and they look insane on me. Even the saleslady was laughing. So if she has slightly larger hands, that might be a help. Also remember the setting gets larger with the stone, so if you go too big, the setting will be very big.

thanks for the info chialea, i liked your suggestions. she has a 7.5 sized finger, is that big? i was planning on getting around .75 carat, the minimum that setting will hold because it is quite an expensive band.

It's not big, but it's quite a big bigger than mine -- I float between a 4.75 and 5.

Sounds like it'll be quite nice. I liked that size stone in those types of rings. Make sure to take a picture of it!

Oh, another thing, that looks like a G&A ring. iirc, they won't take diamonds below VS2 for setting, so you might want to factor that in, as well as no durability-issue feathers. They also may want you to sign a waiver if there's high "strain" in the diamond, so you probably want to have your vendor check for that, just to eliminate any potential headaches. In any other situation, that whole strain thing seems like it's not a problem, but I guess they want to be REAAALLY careful before putting something that expensive in a vise...

i started reading about tension settings here on PS, and found the name Steven Kretchmer, so I googled that, and found pearlmansjewelers.com, who had that setting. do you know if Kretchmer settings make you sign a waiver? He told me he could competetively price a diamond similar to ones i would find using PS, that i wouldn't have to worry about breaking i think. Thanks for your help :-) here is the website for reference

Questions...That "thing" in my picture is my Champion show dog. He is a six year old Chow Chow.....

If you would recrop your nice doggy photo and remove a bit of the width of the photo, your dog will regain a dog-like appearance. Right now the doggy is being squeezed from a rectangular photo into a square shaped frame. Square off your image and re-post it. It will be great improved.

sorry if i offended you!!! i really didn't mean to. you have to admit though that oldminers post was kind of humerous :-)

I think so... Never heard that tension settings would make diamonds look whiter, but given that telling those grades apart is hard enough, I bet the statement is hard to prove right or wrong. "I" color in a 0.75cts round should not look anything but colorless.

High crown would be 15% and higher - very much the norm for ideal rounds.

Obviously I had some ploy in mind with the mention of a fancy cut: I bet an open setting like that would show a particularly fiery stone to it's best advantage. And THIS was cut to be fiery, for example. An unusual setting just brought to mind an unusual stone - easy enough
