What karat gold for man's band?

I have a friend who is shopping for her future husband's wedding ring. He has picked out a 6mm yellow gold millegrained band.

I recommended they purchase 14k for durability and scratch resistance over the years. But now I'm wondering if that is a correct assessment.

What would PSers recommend for a man's ring that is intended to last forever. He works moderately with his hands.

I'd recommend 14kt and a cheap band for everyday wear. Many of my male coworkers have LOST their wedding bands.

My husband has 14K and it has lasted fine for 28 years. He does work in an office, but he plays sports and does handiman jobs around the house. My dad wore 14k for 40 years. He was a machinist who worked with his hands.

Yep - that is exactly why we got WG....I thought it'd get lost at some point!!

14K - my husband 17 yrs, my dad 55 years. As far as losing goes - well neither takes off his ring - no issue!

Yes, gold is soft so the less gold the better, but then it also depends what other alloys are added.

You can also consider 10K gold or titanium or tungsten.

18 for me; a 6 mm men's band is going to last forever, no matter what, not like a 2.5/3 mm woman's band. Gold doesn't scratch that much at all compared to platinum. There's no real right answer, though.

my husband has worn 14k for 10 years now and i'd say we're both happy with it. it's still a solid piece, although i find it does scratch up and get dull pretty quickly. he doesn't work with his hands, but he does wear it 24/7. i'm not knowledgeable on the other options, but i thought i would just share an observation about what i am familiar with.

I'd say 14-18 K for yellow gold because of the colour. I'm not that fond of the look of 10 K yellow gold for a "proper" ring.
