Not everyone may believe in people being born with special gifts or talents but I was talking to DH about this last night. I asked him what he thought his was (he is a number genius) but funny enough he said his special gift was something else entirely. We started a discussion about our various friends and nearly everyone we brought up has something that they excel in on another level that most other people.

I found that it's hard sometimes to recognize this in yourself so it might help to ask your SO or a friend. Share your special abilities/talents/gifts.

Love this topic StephanieLynn. My dh would say my special gift is that I am very intuitive. I seem to "know" who you are (when meeting you IRL) very quickly and accurately. It is not necessarily a positive talent.

And another quality that I don't think is a gift is that I am (too) empathetic and I feel others pain acutely much of the time so not sure if that is what you meant by the question but that is something I experience to my detriment much of the time.

What is your special gift StephanieLynn?

Missy that is a great gift to have, although I get that it's a blessing and a curse. Also we need more empathetic people in this world, it really would make it a better place.

I had no idea what my gift was, DH said I have a gift with animals, maybe it helps that I prefer animals over most people lol! Also I can find out anything about anyone and I enjoy the challenge, should have been a P.I. I guess :Up_to_something2:

Yes me too. ::) Notice I agree with most and didn’t say all. But I’m with you.

Funnily enough, I feel like my ADHD is my special gift. It’s a curse often when the world expects or wants me to follow socionormative rules (e.g. forgetting to say thank you bc I’m so excited about the gift itself, forgetting to finish an important conversation bc my brain interrupts my thought so I go on tangents, the billions of times I’ll interrupt someone, forgetting to text back) or normal life things (e.g. closing doors, turning off the lights, closing the f’ing refrigerator door...)

But bc of how impulsive my brain is, I also move on from things that have upset me quickly unless it’s PTSD territory. And even then, the PTSD moments where I am low, I rather move on and get distracted easily.

BC of this “super power”, I’m able to let a lot of things slide that may have otherwise burnt me out at work or have a tougher romantic/closer relationship with others. I rarely fight with DH because I can’t hold a grudge if I don’t remember it.

I’ll ask DH later what he thinks mine is... if I remember lol

I'm a clair. I'm Clair cognizant.

Humour. It's all I have to offer most of the time. Even at inappropriate times. It's how I deal with life.

Madelise, it speaks volumes about your character that you can take something that many would consider a hinderance and see it as a positive attribute. At least since you are able to move on so quickly from stress or forget about it all together that is much healthier than holding on to it.

Whitewave, had to look up the term clearcognizant as I had not heard of it before, sounds like a superpower if you ask me!

Lyra, it's so much better if you can find the humor in a situation and not everyone can do that is most definitely a gift IMO.

I can sing. I can play piano by ear. These are fun but I don’t spend much time with them anymore. Ok, I sing like a rockstar in my car.

If I have a deep connection to a person, I can kind of read their minds. I often start conversations with what people are thinking at that moment. My youngest son is way better at this than I am...he’s to the point of creepy. When he was little, I would be stressing on my mom and he would call from the back seat of the car, “Don’t worry about grandma, mama!”

He does it all of the time! I have decided to hone that skill in him. Tell him to never suppress it. Allow it to grow and make him very intuitive. I believe it will serve him well when he’s older. So many times we shut those things down in children.

But, I can think to myself that I want my best friend or my closest aunt to call me and within a day, they always do. I can’t do it superficially though. I have to have a real desire. Last time, I really needed to hear my aunt’s voice, she called a day later and said she wanted to come stay. She doesn’t call often, maybe once every four or five months.

This all really freaks my husband out. So maybe that’s my gift, keeping my husband on his toes.

I'm apparently really funny, especially when I'm serious. It's a combo of how I think and my delivery. Apparently my humor is atypical bc i often get a laugh and the response "only you". It seems to help diffuse situations and break the ice.

I've also been told that I offer a perspective that's unique - viewpoint C when most are offering A and B for consideration.

I'm just :loopy:

Hi,

IRL I seem to be a listener. People tell me all sorts of things without me even wanting to know. I really find it weird. I am a secret holder. Sometimes I'll say to myself, Oh no, why did you tell me that?
I just accept it now. I'm not awfully judgy, perhaps people can tell. I don't reciprocate secrets or info, I just let people talk. I once had a boss who told me that people want to tell you their secrets. so let them.

Housecat, that intuition/mind reading you have is pretty cool, I can see how it could creep your husband out though, he doesn't want you to read his mind right?! Absolutely right about kids and that natural intuition they have, so often it gets shutdown especially when they hit school and are taught to fall in line and not think for themselves. Kudos to you for trying to preserve that for your son.

Pinto, I will give you that, you are one funny lady also it is a great thing to think outside the box, it's becoming a lost art.

SmitCompton, I read somewhere that people don't listen to listen, they listen to respond. So it's probably refreshing for these people who talk so openly to you to find someone who they can really talk to. Or perhaps they just can't talk to anyone else in their life, in any case it's wonderful that you can be there for them.

That's a great gift to have Mrs. B. and after seeing your treasures on PS I'd say you also have the gift of great taste =)2

I have a weird ability to take in very detailed visual information faster than I consciously process. So when I read a book it’s like speed reading except I can pick out a tiny grammatical error, like a double spacing or spelling mistake but I’ll be 3 pages further along before I go “ wait a second”. I can also find things that are lost. Many years ago a lady lost her sapphire out of her ring setting, about 1 carat size, on a huge grass covered playing field. There was a sign up on the fence, saying it was lost somewhere on the field and she was devastated as it was an heirloom ring. I found it within 15 minutes of looking. She was absolutely astonished. I got a $50 reward which for a 14 year old was a small fortune!

Mine is more a "stupid pet trick" than a gift. I can easily solve scrambled word puzzles like Jumble. I just look at the letters and read the word. It doesn't really look scrambled to me on first glance.

Bron357, I have a million things I can't find, can you please come over???

I can pinpoint accents (voice), with actors speaking "british" or "american", I can always tell their natural accent/country.
Amazingly useless haha.

I don’t know if it’s a gift. I do consider it a blessing. I am very logical, not so much about problems and puzzles but about life. Sometimes it may make me seem cold and/or unfeeling. But it has served me well. I have never gotten into trouble, no addictions, never succumbed to peer pressure, or even struggled with it or made bad decisions about relationships. Really just a rather safe and maybe some think boring and drama free life. I am fine with that. My daughter has inherited this but to an even more extreme degree. She will lead a safe, boring and conservative life. At this point, she seems perfectly content with that prospect too.

Bron, that is a great story about finding the sapphire, I'm sure she thought it was lost forever. I think my son has that speed reading gift, he goes through books so fast I can hardly keep up!

Maria, it's a pretty cool trick to be able to just see the word like that, it's funny how some people can see things right away that others could stare at for hours to no avail. Fascinating really.

Telephone, could come in handy someday, never know!

LLJ's, nothing wrong with safe and "boring". Sounds like you appreciate the drama free life that comes along with it. I'd be happy if my kids were that way, less to worry about you know?

I so enjoy reading about everyone's gifts, it's interesting to see all the different things that make us special.:appl:

I'm a musician. I got my first union card at 16 playing woodwinds in the pit. My degrees are in clarinet performance. I play piano well enough to get paid for that too. I'm a good conductor.

I'm a quick learner, I had a career change when I moved to Alaska---env chemistry/regulatory project manager. I wrote the state's drinking water laws and I managed a large Superfund site going through Base Realignment and Closure/Reuse.

I am, to quote my friend Ann, a "good sayer of things."

I also have a great capacity to get sh!t done. Big sh!t. Little sh!t. Shit that no one else wants to do, but has still got to get done. All short of sh!t. I get it DONE.

AZ, major respect to anyone who is musically inclined, I can't even play a recorder! Being a quick learner is so important these days, the workplace is so much more competitive than it used to be. Of course you are also an awesome pet parent, that is a gift in itself.

DeeJay, love that "a great sayer of things" it is a great thing to be well spoken and to know what to say and how to say it, delivery is everything right? So you are the great sayer of things that gets all the sh!t done

My kids would say my special talent is annoying them! I've gotten so good at it!:Up_to_something2:

I think if I asked my DH what my special talent is I would probably get the deer in the headlight look:shock:.

People have said I’m intuitive and funny.

I know I’m a highly sensitive person so I can tune in to people and situations. It can be exhausting at times being able to read energy.
Being sensitive and receptive means I’m empathetic and a good listener, but also a target for bullies and harassers.

My sons are like me too, as is my husband. We struggle at times with it, but my boys are kind. I am so proud of their hearts.

Props!! I can’t say much without it coming out like...harsh, kinda. I think linearly and my words follow my thoughts. Life would be a lot less full of conflict if I could be more diplomatic.

Adding on...
I think you're a good f bomb dropper cuz you can out f bomb me which is pretty f'ing fantastic.

I also think that you make magic happen with a Costco membership when throwing parties.:lickout:

.
You know yourselves !

I don't ...

LOL, sometimes the things that need to be said benefit from diplomacy, and sometimes they require the F bomb. And sometimes they need both.
