Just saw this on youtube about cleaning rings. What is YOUR best tip for keeping your ring sparkling and cleaning it "Safely?"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hw0XZu_QiFA

What do you think of this method shown in the video? Is it true, that the dishwashing soap is less corrosive than a cleaner like connossieurs or windex? I never tried Windex, I can't bring myself to do it.

Has anyone ever tried Sparkle Spark le from h sn????

POST YOUR BEFORE AND AFTER PICS TOO!

If you have gold, don't use Windex. Platinum can handle it once in a while, but i only use it in a pinch. Dish soap and water is THE BEST and gentlest method for both the ring and your hands because it cuts the grease that diamonds have an affinity for. I never found connossieurs to be any good, and actually buy it for the jar and little brush, dump the cleaner out immediately and use the jar and tray to soak my rings with hot water and dish soap and the little brush for occasional scrubbing on my ering as needed. I never use that on my bands though, ever. I use the little qtip lookin things from the sparkle sparkle sets instead on those.

I use Sparkle Sparkle all the time but I buy it right from the company, Nventa, not from HSN. Buy the one that goes with your metal, that works the best than the general cleaner, ie. gold cleaner for gold, platinum if you have platinum. It works great on diamonds either way, but the gold cleaner works better on gold and white gold and preserves the rhodium plating better. But soaking them in hot water mixed with dish soap and wiping down after drying completely (with dry and clean paper towels) with another paper towel dampened with rubbing alcohol works just as well.

Cleaning them constantly keeps them sparkling best, frankly. And not wearing them when you plan to use your hands for ANY reason at all. Meaning, don't clean, cook, sleep in them, work with your hands AT ALL while wearing them, generally rendering your hand with a ring on worthless and well guarded to avoid any whacks or touches, and they'll stay perfect. I go out of my way to not use my hands while wearing my rings. Maybe impractical for other people, but that's just how I am.

I use Dawn and hot water and an old soft toothbrush - first I run hot water over my ring, then I put the ring in the glass jar, then I pour maybe a half-tablespoon of Dawn right over my ring, then I run hot water in the glass jar until it is just over my ring. I let that sit maybe an hour, then I pull out my ring and scrub it a bit with the toothbrush, then run it under hot water, scrub again, more hot water, and then I add a bit of hot water to the soapy water already in the glass jar, and pop my ring back in - there it sits overnight. The next morning I pull it out, scrub again with toothbrush, rinse it under hot water, put it on a bit of tissue or paper towel for a minute or two, then use a Q-Tip to finish drying it. This is what I call my deep cleaning.

The short and fast version is running hot water over my ring, putting a little Dawn on the old toothbrush and scrubbing the ring a bit while in and out of the hot water, then blowing on it with my breath, wiping it with a Q-Tip, and putting it back on my finger.

(As an aside: I just recently realized I don't do my deep-cleaning version often enough, as when I did it the other day, I was super-amazed and quite frankly flabbergasted at how sparkly/shiny/new-from-the-WF-box the diamond ring looked... I had even been contemplating a re-set or upgrade just in the prior week, but after this deep-clean, I see an upgrade/re-set is not necessary and I just need to take care of my ring - certainly I realized I could never give up my diamond!)

My best tip to keep my rings sparkling is not to wear them around the house. I just do too much around the
house that mucks them all up.

Great tips, keep them coming.

The jeweler recommended Dawn (just a tiny drop she said) and warmish /hot? water, that's it.

I found the sparkle sparkle cleaner for platinum , thank u so much. didn't know they targeted certain metals, i thought the main one cleans everything safely. :)

Fairy and soft toothbrush, daily.

I had the one called "everyday" and I almost never used it. The everyday smells good (orange oil I think) but it doesn't cut grime the same way the platinum/gold ones do. I used it once or twice in a pinch at work when I didn't have spares of the platinum like I do now, but I have since actually dumped the everyday out of that bottle and refilled it with the platinum because it just works better. There is a difference between the "gold" and the "platinum" in that the formulation for gold keeps gold tarnish away and keeps the rhodium on white gold around longer. Platinum can tolerate more, so the platinum formula works for platinum better than for gold. I used to use my platinum on my sisters white gold ring and we noticed the rhodium wore off faster so I just gave her one of the gold sets from the bridal stash and now I just give her full bottles of it when I order more. My mom even uses the gold one now.

But I soak my rings and or wash my hands with that method dish soap and make sure I get my rings really well, and that helps tremendously. It cuts through it. I usually use clementine bec it smells good. Drying the rings REALLY WELL after cleaning, especially your stones, makes a big difference too.

I've started using my household steam machine, then drying with a coffee filter and it's made all the difference. Far above and beyond any other method [I've tried them all]. I bought a well-cut diamond online that should have had better performance - but it was just missing the mark.I tried the things mentioned, also a sonic machine and the stone still did not come alive. I steamed it and there she was; total flash & fire.
I wonder if steaming diamonds on a regular basis has any downside [?].

I keep a jar of Connoisseurs (fine for platinum and diamonds) on my bathroom vanity and drop them (carefully) in there while I get ready in the morning and give a light brushing to my diamond as I rinse in warm water. I use an ultrasonic maybe once a month max. I still have some jewelry cleaning solution but I'd use the drop of Dawn and hot water otherwise.

Oh no. I use diluted Windex. I best switch to Dawn, huh?

I really like how my rings look after using my steamer on them (jewel jet).

So the gold one is less effective on the platinum?? Then do u think it is "safer" for the platinum?? Not sure what to order....
I don't want to strip the ring/finish (plat)

Gold and Platinum are different metals which wear and age differently.

If you have Platinum get the one for Platinum. You can't "strip" Platinum since that's the actual metal, and it's not really a "finish". So it's not like you'll do damage to the Platinum ring using the cleaner labeled "gold". The Platinum formula is designed to work specifically for platinum to keep any potential "tarnish" from forming on the metal. If you have Gold, White Gold or Rose Gold, get the one for Gold because it's specifically to work for gold to keep the gold tarnish off and prevent chelating of rhodium plating on white gold. The gold one will work fine on Platinum but there's no reason to buy the gold product if you have a platinum ring.

I've been soaking my rings in rubbing alcohol while I shower. We have really hard water that leaves a terrible film on everything so I'm paranoid about soaking my diamonds in it for long. So far the rubbing alcohol has worked well for me.

thx

I use diluted non-ammonia Mr.Clean every morning with and overnight Dawn soak once every week to two weeks. I've tried the gold Sparkle Sparkle, and use that every now and then when I'm in a hurry, but in all honesty I think the Mr.Clean does the best job out of all the other options.

I use Connoisseurs every day and I like it just fine. But I do a final rinse with distilled water to make sure there aren't any mineral deposits that can leave a residue like tap water (thanks to Kenny, who I believe is the one who said this!). Then I dry with a towel and a very pointy small cotton swab. A steam clean at the jeweler every now and then is also awesome, but I don't think the difference between it and daily Connoisseurs is earth shattering by any means.

I agree about the Mr. Clean, I love it in the ultrasonic diluted with hot water. I do that about once a week.

Amazon sells steamers for $99 but you know they sell hand held cleaners that spray pressurize steam for 60 or less. They are meant for cleaning but do the same thing. I think u pay a premium for the actual jewelry steamers. I have one on order will report back.

I used Wright's jewelry cleaner the other day. Worked nicely. A short soak and then a gentle scrub before a thorough rinse and dry.

I soak my engagement ring in a cup of hot or warm water and a few drops of dish soap for a bit. Then I scrub it gently with a baby toothbrush and dry it with a lint-free paper towel or cloth.

I have this same routine!

To ME - there's NO comparison to the ultrasonic - even if I think other methods work, I'm shocked when I put them in the US

I might add that after the washing I use a tiny bit of dishwasher rinse agent, then rinse again.

Has anyone tried the OxiJewel cleaning pods? They are supposed to be safe for diamonds, gold, platinum, and silver.

What kind of ultrasonic do you have?

What kind of ultrasonic do you have?

..and how long do you leave your ring in?

I have a GemOro and I thought it would be great - had great reviews and was supposed to be what jewelers use, but the steaming works much better.
When I took my rings to the jeweler they said they never bother with the sonic cleaner anymore, just a toothbrush and a steamer.
I really do wonder what the most highly recommended "magic technique" is

Question from the newbie, how long is it safe to soak your ring in Connoisseurs or dish soap/hot water? My connoisseurs says to dip for upto 30sec, so I'm always worried to leave it for more than a couple of mins!

That is intense cleaning. My cleaning involves washing my hands with my rings on :P

Chck this out. Cheaper than the single purpose steamers for 99. This unit is fantastic and it comes with a bent nozzle attachment perfect for holding rings under it. I will not clean my gals ring any other way now.

This is a nice small ultrasonic unit. And cheap.

U wont need anything else. Plus the steamer can be used to clean and sterilize things around the house so u can justify the 60 bucks!! :D
