I have done pretty well in tech, but my salary is dwarfed by my girlfriend that works in healthcare. it's a different era and I'm incredibly proud of her talent and success.

And also just because the posters who have stayed around (and frequent hangout) are more likely those who have the funds to continue to pursue their passion for diamonds and other gems with purchases beyond just the engagement and wedding rings.

Hangout isn't really used by newbies. It's used by the PS Veterans, mostly, who are on the richer-than-average side. I mean, look at all the upgrade rings that are posted by our PSers! HUGE!

Also, I think the lower end bracket, the <$30K, of which I am part of, should be broken down further. For someone who earns a 70K+ income, a difference of 10K doesn't make that big of a difference. It's between living very comfortably and even more comfortably. Why make the bracket one of the wider ones for a section who feels the most pinch of a dollar? There's a big difference between earning 30K annually vs. 15K annually. And, of course, those SAHW and SAHMs that voted "$0", would also add a skew.

From my part of the world, some possibilities: lawyers (senior lawyers), bankers (mostly front office or the brainiacs and senior back office people), accountants (really senior ones, like partners), sales (bonuses can be substantial), doctors (specialists/consultants in certain areas), senior corporate officers, successful business people and even some of the really successful property and insurance agents (again these are sales related).

I'm on a salary that is 50% less than what I was making when I had my own business. I chose my job for specific career reasons. Don't get me wrong, I'm making great money and have an amazing career. I got my advanced degree a couple of years ago which is when I decided to take the 50% paycut - a little unusual but I have no regrets.

I'm proud of the PS community for being well remunerated. I'd be interested to see a poll about 'what is your highest level of education'.

me too! It cost us more to put the kids in daycare than I made teaching so I quit. The best part is the kids being in school now so I can spend all day at the gym, shopping, getting mani pedis and whatever else I feel like doing. I am spoiled...my friends hate me.

My husband is a software engineer (Director position, though.) He makes more than a lot of the doctors around here. I told both of my kids to major in engineering.

When I saw that I thought a few ppl might have put instead of indivdual salary put their household income so that would account for some of those votes. But now I think we just have some bad ass PS'ers making bank!

It's pretty typical for most specialists to make over that on the west coast. You're right, location plays a big role though. Cost of living is probably a lot less in the SE, so making $250k in NYC or San Francisco likely does not result in a better quality of life than making $175k in Orlando.

An interesting follow up question would be to ask how much poll respondents have set aside for retirement. Anecdotally, I've found that salary and financial responsibility don't correlate.

At the previous hospital I was employed, there was a bit of back pay to the current employees due to post-dated salary negotiations. One of my senior work colleagues was overpaid by more than $80,000! She just started laughing when she opened the paperwork in the tea room. She obviously contacted payroll about it, but the money sat in her mortgage offset account for a good number of weeks before they sorted out what had happened and gave her instructions for how to return it.

Ask me at the end of the year. I am always surprised (sometimes positively, sometimes not).

As my employer does not guarantee me a job - I find the discussion of "salary" meaningless. We do have an agreement that they do pay me at a certain rate for the hours they employ me. While firings are rare... they do occur; and this year has been the year of multiple "early retirement packages" to many people. Some people have been "encouraged" to retire more than others.

Actually there's LOTS of money in education...it's just the TEACHERS that don't bring in the big bucks. Coming from another "poor" teacher...
