What is this tiny (dark) spot on girdle?

Hi Everyone,

I finally got my ring and it''s beautiful; however, I brought it to an independent appraisar this morning and she noticed that there was a small dark spot on the girdle. Initially she suggested it was a chip and then said it was a natural. The only thing the GIA cert specifies are some feathers very near the girdle, which were not visible to us because they were put under a prong. The ring is a VS2.

I will try to take a closeup picture of this spot when I get home. But could it be the feather? I can not see it with the naked eye. I don''t feel a chip (but then again, I wouldn''t know what I was feeling anyway) and I tried to wipe off the black spot repeatedly and it is still there. How would GIA miss this "natural" if that''s what is when it''s clearly visible under 10x magnification?

Thanks!

A natural will normally be mentioned and plotted in green on the report unless it was missed by GIA ( unlikely). I would contact your appraiser and ask her to clarify, tell her after the appraisal you have a query you would like her to address and she should be willing to do so and look at the stone again for you if necessary. I would think she should be able to tell you what it is, we can only speculate as you know so thats my advice.

Does your appraiser verify that stone is the stone you bought, verify with the GIA report?

I was also thinking that, Bella she did in fact say that this diamond matches the description on the report? Am I remembering correctly you purchased from one of the vendors here?

I just checked and the stone is from JA. Best to follow Lor and stone''s advice and talk to the appraiser, make sure the diamond matched the cert and then go from there.

The appraiser verifyed the size, color and cut and said it matched. The feather inclusions were under a prong and not visible to either of us under the microscope. Her microscope only went up to 15x, I think.

The ring was purchased from james Allen. I would like to see this dot at 40X or something so I can clearly see what this spot could be. I''m so confused.

I spoke to the appraiser and she said it looked like a natural to her. She said chips are usually angled (or something like that). It''s a small dot in the center of the girdle, so if the girdle is two lines (=), the spot is located in the center of the two lines, not touching the top or bottom line.

Do you think it can be a polish mark? The cert says VG for polish. Is there a thread here about polish marks?

Thanks!!

I think the next step is to speak with James Allen Bella, we would only be speculating here. They are a great company and will be eager to address any concerns you have and indeed would want to. Tell them what happened and what the appraiser said and then you can go from there.

ditto, check back with JA.

I cannot understand why a natural would look black, unless some gunk got caught in there. If it is a natural and is in the girdle not touching the crown or the pavilion then I believe (and I am working from memory here) that the GIA would not plot it. Also I am unsure of your appraiser misspoke or you misheard, but a chip would not be angled, that would more likely be a natural or a cavity. In any case you should try to get some more information, but I would not be overly concerned. Even if it is an unplotted natural I cannot see what difference it would make on a VS stone. If it is a dark feather (and this is a possibility) it could still be a VVS inclusion and thus not plotted on a report as it is not germain to the clarity grade. Not sure if this helps, but good luck.

Thanks everyone for the help.

So, I got confirmation today that it''s a dark crystal inclusion that is very near the girdle. Again, it''s not eye visible and only visible with the loupe when looking at the girdle. It''s not visible with loupe from the crown or pavillion (but then again the stone is mounted).

I''m just wondering why it was left off of the GIA report? I know human error is a possibility, but it''s just odd to me.

Thanks!

could be human error

Another reason could be that it was really insignificant in the grand scheme of things when determining the grade? Like the way pinpoints aren't included in the plot diagram of an SI - there's just so much else to worry about and identify the stone with, it's not worth mentioning
