Hi all

I’m very confused about whether the diamond my fiancé gave me is an Asscher or an Asscher/radiant hybrid. The jeweller tells us it’s a unique hybrid and we thought we were getting a radiant (and we do realise now it doesn’t look like a normal radiant!). The jeweller has offered to exchange it for a pure radiant (with us to meet any price difference) - I’m quite drawn to this diamond but still unsure.

Diamond experts out there please help!

Thanks so much in advance. 1B75EF20-3F17-407B-9B88-34B8D5B27D04.jpeg8102A068-3F7F-4758-AD28-25CD5484CAB5.jpeg

It looks like an Asscher not a hybrid. GIA listed it as a cut-cornered square step cut. I don’t think it’s a Royal Asscher but it looks close to it. It looks like a very nice stone if your heart is not set on a radiant.

It's a pretty asscher - love the wider windmills/clipped corners - that may be why your jeweller is calling it a radiant since a lot of asschers seem to have really thin windmills so they might not recognise it as such.

I like the facet patterning! :)

Are you able to post a video for us step-cut fans? :D

Definitely an asscher.. A lot of jewelers don't know asschers very well. It's a pretty asscher, but not ok if you wanted a radiant and this is what they gave you. So it kind of depend on what you want. If you like the asscher keep it, it's very pretty, but if you want a radiant you may need to keep looking.

I concur with others. I don't see any sign of a hybrid. Radiants are tough to find that perform well. Are you looking for crisp facets (like that asscher) or crushed ice? If you give us some direction (4C) and budget, we can look for a few that you can direct your jeweler to see if he can get them...as he seems to be having some confusion about the cut.

Totally an asscher. A nice one too by the looks of it. But, like someone above said, if you don't want an asscher, doesn't really matter how nice it is.…it's still not a radiant.

As per usual I 100%agree with diamonseeker. Nice asscher but will face up a bit small. And I don't care for radiants much.. but I love asschers..
And congrats on your engagement!
Just make sure it is what you want. There's a lot on this forum about different shapes and their performance and charactaristics.. read up and take a look at everyone's rings of both shapes go with what you love.

Thanks everyone! I kind of suspected that would be the answer but wanted to make 100% sure.
I really do love the asscher and it obviously has sentimental value now it's what he proposed with but I'm trying on some radiants today so I'll know for sure then. Its funny that when I was first looking at diamonds I thought I'd love an emerald but I didn't and favoured a square cut shape. I'd never really heard of or considered asscher but now I have one I love their elegance and uniqueness.
I'm kind of hoping I don't actually like the radiants I try on today more as in principle I love asschers and what they represent - now I

Radiants have a brilliant cut pavilion. That means there are long facets that come together at a point at the back. Asschers have step cut pavilions. That means there are rows of parallel facets that go 'steplike' from the culet up to the girdle.

Yours is a step cut.

Welcome to Pricescope! It would be best if you post a new thread if you want to ask questions about a stone as few people would see it added onto an old thread. But I would say that magnified pictures exaggerate things, and you are in a much better position to evaluate whether it is noticeable in real life viewing. Does it bother you or do you not notice it?

Thank you! I don’t know how to create a new post or thread-would you be able to tell me how to from my phone? It is a hybrid and although too late to do anything about it, it does bother me :(

I am on my computer and not my phone, but if you go back to the main Rocky Talky page, there should be a button that says "Post New Thread". On the computer, it is on the far right of that main page. But there may be a different format on the phone.

I am so sorry it bothers you! Honestly, most of us here that are older started out with diamonds that were far from perfect, and since then, we have learned a lot and gotten new diamonds for anniversaries, or other occasions. I wore my original for about 25 years and it had things that bothered me, too, but I didn't know a thing about diamonds or where to get really well cut ones! So my suggestion is to work toward someday maybe getting an anniversary ring that maybe can replace it, and reset that one into a pendant or something. The other option is to see if your jeweler allows upgrades so you could get a stone that is more pleasing to you. But I realize your fiance or husband may have thoughts about that, too! Sometimes it takes time to get them to adjust to the idea! I am sure your ring is beautiful and most other people wouldn't notice anything at all!
