What is "rolled" platinum in making settings?

I’m familiar with the process of making a wax model from a CAD drawing and then creating a mould from the wax model, which is then used in casting with platinum.A custom jeweller that I’m using is making a setting by rolling platinum and working it by hand.I said uhhh, OK, but didn’t think to ask in greater detail.

Can anyone shed some more light on this process and the pros and cons as compared to casting?

The above link is talking about gold and there is a picture of rollers, I don't know if it is the same with platinum but it may give you some information.
