what is causing this diamond to look "off" ?

So I am looking at a loose stone and something just looks weird to me about it. It's sort of opalescent and just different. What's causing this look? Is it poor transparency? Is it a poor cut? Is it negative effects from clarity enhancement?

And then I wonder is it even a diamond? I just randomly came upon it and it's intriguing.

Looks dirty to me. Have you seen the stone or just this photograph?

I've just seen a couple photographs and videos. The other photos have a similar oily look to them. Might just be a poor representation of it due to being dirty. I think it'd be in my best interest to inquire about it a bit more.

Another photo.

Could be a lot of things, including poor photography skills. The stone obviously has a lot of inclusions and is probably an SI2 or I1 judging from the photo, but it is hard to say as we do not know the x factor of the photo, is it showing at 10X or 60X or somewhere in between?

It could be so cloudy as to look almost translucent instead of transparent, it could be too close to the camera, thus causing the huge extinction in the center of the stone or just so poorly lit that there is no sparkle showing.

However, there are just so many things that we do not know that we can not really say why it looks so "off," but I certainly agree with you that it does.

It's the classic nail head. Deep stone.

Could that be 'white fluorescence'?

Figured out that it is indeed a nail head diamond. I found out it's total depth is 68% which is way out of the ideal range.

With something so deep, would it be worth sending it off to have it recut? I'd image the weight loss would be significant.

I really would look for something else. Even if you did have it recut it still looks really dirty!!! Are you open to other vendors? What's your budget?

That poor stone is not worth recutting. It is uglier than just the poor cutting will account for, and even cut well, I am pretty sure it will still be ugly.

There are a LOT ( I can not figure out how to to a LOT with a squared symbol) of diamonds available from the vendors here that will not require recutting with the price per carat cutting charge charged at a 1ct minimum. If they gave this stone to you for free, it would very probably not be worth recutting.

Just my opinion of course...
