I''ve seen a lot of this "cut" on my internet travels lately. All I''ve seen are pics, though. Is it a faceting done from the bottom of the stone? Is the top smooth? Is it a way to sell junk?
There are several cuts called starburst...
1: varies fold cuts from the 50's
2: patented(yea right) cut from the 70s
3: some places sell concave cuts as being starburst
4: I'm finding hints of a newish material from Canada that is a mix of red/green w/ blue flash quartz that some idiots decided too call Starburst Amethyst.
All 3 look very different. The first I''d consider as fancy cutting which I''ve seen before but don''t know the name of the cut. The 2nd looks like fancy too but more towards concave with the wavy patterning. The 3rd looks like a portugese cut which is also another type of fancy cut. I guess these amethyst (and topaz) are cut in fancy cuts to make them stand out from the regular flooded amethyst market.
again, agree with Chrono. i didn''t look at the topaz but all the amethysts looked to be concave or a variation of concave cut to me. perhaps an attempt to give life to an otherwise lifeless stone? nothing wrong with that, imo, as long as you like the look and the color is satisfying.
