And are ''modern settings'' typically a custome one??

Modern settings ... well, for me, they tend to consist of clean lines; little excessive ornament; striking combinations. There are fewer of them out there then there are traditional settings, but they don''t necessarily have to be custom: Ettiene Pierret makes gorgeous modern settings; so too MaeVona. Tension settings are also very modern to my eye: Steve Kretchmer and Gelin Abaci make gorgeous ones. There''s a lot of good stuff out there - this is barely touching the tip of the iceberg!

I think the Tiffany Lucida ring is the epitome of "modern". Clean lines. Catherine Iskiw''s work also looks modern ... Stuart Moore showcases many modern designers. But its important to get more information about what *kind* of modern setting. They vary from extremely stark, almost pipe-like -- to more fanciful, flowy, evocative expressions. From mirror finishes to textured to swirly to matte. I''ve even seen alterna-rings set with "diamonds" made of metal. Cool, but I prefer the *real* thing.

To me modern is minimalist, simple, usually metal only, highlights the stone, etc. I love some of the modern designs by scholdt, they are my favorite modern settings!

Tension settings, clean straight lines that german designers favor,
bezels (full and semi) without any pave work.
Bauhaus inspired minimalistic designs.

All those say modern to me.

A few designers: Henrich and Denzel, Niessing, Steven Kretchmer.

Stuart Moore is a great store that carries various modern designers.

Is your FI requesting something modern?

No - no request for something modern. However, a close friend of hers mentioned that she is more of a modern setting type-a girl and I really wasn''t sure what that meant, lol!
Hmmm, you might want to get more clarification. It might mean that she wants something classic like a typical four/six prong setting. However, it may mean she just doesn''t like antiquey-type settings with pave, milgrain, etc. You might want to call up the friend and get more details about what she might like.

For some reason I don''t know why when I think modern, I don''t think Sholdt, AND I HAVE ONE!
