I was just curious if there were any that were absolute deal breakers for anyone here? And why that would be.

Anything I can see.

Also a feather that breaks the surface or is too near the girdle, and clouds that afect brilliance.

Same as above, except where seeing inclusions is concerned I don''t mind seeing them from the side if discreet.

Ditto the other 2, but another one that drives me batty is black spots....my first ering has one way down in the stone and it really bugs me because they are so noticeable

"Clarity grade is based on clouds that are not shown".

Clouds as the grade-setters in any stone below VS1.

Large feathers on the girdle of SI or lower stones.

A SI or lower stone with most of it''s inclusions clustered together (clustered SI2 crystals in particular will tend to appear as one huge, black, unsightly inclusion).

On my earrings I am willing to take more inclusions. Like I have a pair that are SI1/2. On the SI2 I can see a fairly noticeable black spot from the side. Nothing from the top. On the SI1 I see a teeny black spot from the side but not the top. I will take a barely noticeable crystal on the top if it blends right. But these are my earrings that are small and I will tolerate more since I don''t look at them closely.

Rings I am way more picky about. Not just with diamonds but with all my stones. I want them eye clean and brilliant no matter what. I look at them more and I am very turned off by impurities that my eye can see or that affects how the stone with sparkle.

I'd be more likely to reject a diamond with significant feathers, and accept one with a discrete "black spot." In fact, that's what I did. I used to be picky about stones being VS2 or better. I've relaxed my standards there. I'd rather have a large well-cut high-color diamond than clarity. If you magnify diamonds enough, "theys's flaws in all of them." lol. :-)

There was a whole thread on here a couple of months ago about feathers and were they structural problems or not.

lots of clouds, inclusions that could affect the structural integrity of the stone, clarity enhanced stones, poorly cut stones.

i only accept small needles and pinpoints and maybe crystals if clear. no feathers, no clouds,

Feathers are the big no no for me. Clouds it depends...if they are minor and not the grade setter, that''s fine. But ''clarity grade is based on clouds not shown,'' no.

I don''t mind a discrete black spot.
But I have one store with what looks like
a dead gnat floating in it
Not my favorite.

For rings with the center diamond as the focus I will not accept any I can see with my reading glasses on under very close inspection. Of my two E-rings one is SI1 and one is VS1. As for bands, I am more flexible. I have a 3 stone band that is I1 with clouds that I wear stacked with colored stone rings. That one does not bother me a bit, and adds some oomph to my colored stone rings.

If an inclusion caused you to exclude a diamond wouldn't the inclusion be called an exclusion?

Feathers are excluded inclusions for me. Actually, I stick to VS1 and VS2 so I don''t have to worry about them.

Good one Kenny

I suppose what the price of the stone and how the inclusion was displayed would play an important part in my decision. I''ve seen a stone which had an inclusion which looked like a miniature, snowy Christmas tree which was really neat under the microscope. I think that my favorite was one that had a small, bright orange crystal under one of the star facets. It gave the whole stone a subtle orange tint. Both would probably be deal breakers for an engagement ring, but if the price were low enough they would be neat to just pull out and look at under the scope once in a while. Fractures and those salt and pepper junkers are obvious deal breakers...I wonder why they even get cut.

I have a completely eye clean VS2 now and previously have had a VS1, and an SI3 (I know, i know..don''t go there). I really don''t think I could deal with a visable flaw on the table and if from the side, I''d only tolerate something discreet..for an engagement ring. I don''t think I''d mind a fun ring with a small visable mark to kind of make it unique.

For me it is a black spot. Any size black spot. Anything else is ok if I cant see it with my eye.

I can take a carbon spot and I can take a feather but after a recent thread on PS I will be very leery of clouds.

I actually like the idea of a crystal. But what ever the inclusion it can't affect the light return or weaken the stone.

Thanks for all the great answers. I don''t know that I care to have a cloud or a feather personally.

I wouldn''t want a feather that jeopardized the structural integrity of a stone, or an eye-visible inclusion. I also wouldn''t accept any "clouds" that made a stone hazy. Otherwise, if it''s well-cut and clean to the naked eye under close scrutiny... I''m good!
