I decided to organize my OEC search into a sortable list based on stats and criteria important to me (e.g. spread). (pivot tables here I come..)

How do you all keep track of and compare the various stones you're considering when making a purchase?

OMG!
I thought nobody else was geeky enough to load all their candidate diamonds into a spreadsheet.

Oh good! I'm not the only one...

But how else can you sort and filter the candidates otherwise?? :)

Some people here 'follow their heart' or wait for one to 'speak' to them.

Clearly you and I are worse than those who 'buy the paper'.
We buy the spreadsheet.

Boy, people surely do vary.

Hahah definitely.

I think it's very important to "follow your heart" but I find it so difficult to judge that when doing the preliminary search on the Internet and vendor photos/videos vary so much. Spreadsheet is more for the initial screening and narrowing down of candidates. ;-)

Also you have so many options online and vendors present their info in so many ways, so I find it helpful to present the candidates in a consistent format for ease of reference.

Yes this is my OCD speaking! I have to organize the information into a tidy format. :naughty: :naughty:

Where's the column that rates their level of attractiveness to you? Because you know old cuts can vary widely in appearance. :cheeky: Even AVRs aren't identical!

I've got a spreadsheet that's kind of similar, but it's of diamonds that I already own. :cheeky:

Yup!! It's not shown on the screenshot but I have a column which sorts the candidates into "Consider" "Shortlist" "Archive" etc. depending on whether they are still in the running.. ;-)

I do the same thing but in handwriting, so I have spiralled bound notebooks with pages of diamond stats like this hand written of potential purchases - the old fashioned boring non techno savvy version :shifty:

Spreadsheet user here too; it's just too easy to edit and keep track using it.

I didn't know there was any other way. I'm just wondering how to post a live spreadsheet on PS.

Here's my loose stone page. Someone could copy it and paste it into a spreadsheet if they wanted to. You'd have to quote me like you were going to reply to me, and copy all the text from there so the tabs would be there. That's how I send copies of spreadsheets when I can't send the actual attachment. You do lose your pretty formatting, fills, etc.

Wow, you've got quite an extensive collection there. I use Excel spreadsheets too and have our home inventory on a MS Access database.

That's just the loose stuff. I didn't want to add in the mounted stones on that post. ::)

After inputing several diamonds into a spreadsheet I was still unable to pick my favorite.

What I WAS able to do was reject the worst one for this spec or that quality.
Then I rejected the next-worst one.
Lather.
Rinse.
Repeat.

Finally I was left with one diamond.
I guess that's becuase I'm such a cynical old fart. ;-) ... or Kenny's brain is like HCA, a rejection tool. ;(
