What features should I look for in a Asscher? Thoughts on this one?

Hello,
I''ve been searching for a 1.7+ carat asscher for awhile now, and I have been focusing on color and clarity primarily. Recently, I''ve been told I need to pay attention to how the diamond is cut and the dimensions. What should I look for? What are the ideal parameters? I don''t have a huge buget, under $10K, so I can''t be too picky.

What do you think of this ring? The pictures aren''t great, but it seems like a deal...the center stone is supposedly GIA certified, I''m waiting for the confirmation.

One prong set square cut diamond exact weight1.73ct. Clarity of SI-1, Color H, Cut is Very Good, Depth is 59.6%, Table is 59.0%.

Two claw set baguette cut (tapered) diamonds (depth est.) exact total weight 2 stones = 0.27ct. Clarity of VS-2, Color of G-H., Cut is very Good.

Two prong set quadrillion cut diamonds (dept est.) exact total weight 2 Stones =0.48 ct. Clarity of VS-2, Color of G-H, Cut is very good.

Total Weight of Diamonds 2.48ct

Is there any way that you can get more specs on the stone? As was said on the other post that you had, you really might have to sacrifice some size to get a well-cut asscher. I know that you''re saying that you can''t be too picky, but (in my opinion) you would probably be better getting a well cut stone that sparkles more than a larger stone that doesn''t do too much. I''m not too good on finding asschers, but I''m sure that someone here could point you in the direction of a nice one.

I would try and stay away from ebay. There have been some beautiful asschers posted from PS''ers come out of Good Old Gold.

I''ve read a lot on PS about asschers, and I think that SI-1 and color H may be less than the best choice, depending on whether the stone is eye clean and how sensitive the wearer is to color.

Also, my main concern would be the setting; most PSers look for a loose stone to put in a custom setting. Unless you really love that setting it''s in, you could probably get a much better deal on a piece from one of the PS recommended vendors.

Ditto this - we''ve heard our share of Ebay horror stories, so please be sure to thoroughly research any company you may possibly buy from via Ebay.

Also, an SI1 in an Asscher is tricky - could work for you, or it could go horribly awry. If they don''t have several magnified pics of the loose diamond, I would be wary that there''s something to hide.

Whiteflash callled in several Asschers for my husband, and they found an amazing diamond! There have been a few others out of WF, too.

Stay away from EBAY! THe prices you get from the pricescope vendors are as low as you are going to get unless you know the vendors in Isreal and, no they are not posting on ebay. Search Asschers on this site and you will find alot of info especially threads by strmrdr, Hest88, chrono. Strmrdr even has some specs on what to look for on an asscher. You can check my threads which have links to other threads, but after a while they focus more on ECs. Good luck and be patient.

Regards,
Mario

I was watching one of Good Old Gold's videos of 2 Asschers and a PoH where Jon mentioned the Asschers they get that are SI are eyeclean... you might want to search there and give Jon a call. Those stunning Asscher videos make me

And I gotta say... most of the jewelery on eBay is very disappointing if not downright crap. Very few get lucky on a purchase, and there are lots of stories here about regretful eBay purchases. Get this in your head as a general rule.... no ebay

Hi All,
Thanks for your comments. I had stopped looking on Ebay since it seemed a bit too risky, but a friend had send me the one posted, and it seemed like a great deal. I''ve actually known 3 of my friends who bought diamonds or rings from eBay (they were all GIA certified diamonds that they had verified). Even after hearing this, I''m still a bit wary. I''m primarily shopping for loose diamonds now (not from eBay).

After contacting over 27 retailers (including JamesAllen and GoG), I have been able to locate 6 diamonds that are 1.7 carats or greater, VS1 to VS2, G to I, GIA or EGL-USA certified and under $10K. The retailers with the diamonds that I have catalogued that meet my parameters were found using this site, ivouch.com and other referrals. I plan on personally viewing these diamonds in February. So, back to one of my questions - What makes an Asscher a GOOD asscher? What dimensions or measurements should I be looking for? On one website, I read "Ideal Asscher Cut Depth: total depth of a properly cut Asscher will fall somewhere between 67 - 71% with the table facet often being a little smaller." Tips like this

I''m still searching and would like to narrow down my options as much as I can before personally visiting these stores or setting up appointments.

Thanks!
