I'm curious as to how people would describe this colour? It's stated as being a pink sapphire. It has a neon glow to it which I just love and I wondered whether it was a pad or not or does it not have enough orange to be a pad?

Also, does it have an inclusion bottom left of pic?

I'm trying to save up for it as it's for sale at a local antique jewellers shop and the setting it's in is gorgeous too, but with the wedding costs, etc I doubt I can afford it yet ;(

I would call it pink. It's a pretty colour.

Looks like a large 'finger-print' inclusion at the bottom left. It's also very hazy due to a lot of microscopic inclusions, which are however helping to minimise the window. I wouldn't want to pay very much for it I'm afraid.

The colour looks very much like the "rubies" that are commonly sold by shopping TV networks in the UK. Typically they've been heavily treated i.e. lead filled, BE diffused etc. Quite large ones sell for very little money. Of course, that is just based on this photo alone and I may be doing it an injustice. If you decide to buy it, the cost of a piece of corundum that has been treated in this manner is very very low and so you should factor this in your decision making process and perhaps (if treatments bother you) arrange for a lab report so you know absolutely what you're buying.

In terms of whether it would fit the colour descriptor of a Padparadscha, I doubt whether it would. The LMHC's definition is that a Padparadscha sapphire is a variety of corundum from any geographical origin whose colour is a subtle mixture of pinkish orange to orangey pink with pastel tones and low to medium saturations. The name Padparadscha cannot be applied if the stone has any colour modifier other than pink or orange.

Hope that helps

I don't know what it is about it, but I really love it! I normally don't like lots of inclusions, etc but there's something about it!

Though looking at it objectively I would probably be better off having the setting made and try to find a colour to match especially since the ring is quite expensive.

Has anyone seen a pink sapphire with the same sort of glow? Is it the colour or the inclusions that are giving it the glow/hazy quality?

They're actually very easy to find - I was at a trade show on Sunday and saw boxes of them. The glow is a combination of the chemical make-up (chromium but NO iron) which gives the fluorescence plus microscopic inclusions that scatter the light internally. In these stones there are rather more than is ideal which is giving the cloudy look.

Ooo that's good to know. What are the average prices and sizes like?

I was having a nosey on eBay and saw a couple that were quite nice - both spinels, but one has black specs on it which I don't like it.

I also saw some 'rubies' with this same orangey glow but they were more red than pink.

Found another thread with a gorgeous stone: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/neon-pink-spinel-is-cut.108272/

These sleepy/glowing stones are really drawing me in

It does have some orange in it and looks to be probably windowed (lessened because it is set) and somewhat opaque-like due to the inclusions. Since it is in an antique shop, I wonder how heavily treated the stone is. Has it been diffused and/or clarity filled. It is possible to find stones that look sort of glowy without looking cloudy which I'm afraid this one looks too cloudy on my monitor. A stone like this should be very inexpensive no matter what. Whether it fits the name "padparadsha" or not, buy the stone you like, not the name (unless you want the name and look, and have the $$$ for it).

After seeing so many other lovely stones with a sleepy/glowing quality I've decided I can't live with the window, so I'll look for a lovely stone and have it set in something similar-ish.

i saw in the previous thread you linked to that someone mentioned multicolour website, so I did a quick search. Here are two that may appeal to you. There are more in the site but those are berylium treated, so I've excluded them.

Check out this link. Top row on right is a silky spinel that looks a color you'd like. http://www.gemfix.com/spinel.html

Not sure about pricing of these type of stones, but is it a bit expensive?

Nice colour, but might be a bit dark.

Price is actually pretty good for that colour. The stone doesn't have any obvious inclusions other than the silk.

That's a suprise with it being quite small and I would've thought these stones with silk and/or inclusions would be significantly cheaper than the norm.

The colour is very good (and colour is everything) and while the stone has silk it's not included. If the stone had less silk the stone would be even more expensive.

The stones I saw at the weekend were in a load of different sizes and price was totally dependent on the quantity of inclusions, exact colour and if they were lead-glass filled etc. The filled stones were about £5/carat, once you got to a stone over 1ct with decent colour and no glaring inclusions they were in 3 figures GBP trade. Ones with very obvious inclusions like the first one you posted were going for around £50 trade for anything around a carat.

Just a heads up, in case you hadn't noticed it, but one of the reasons for the price of that stone is that it's a bit shallow and so has quite a sizeable window. Colour is pretty though.

Hope you don't mind my pointing these things out!

OK, sat at work with nothing to do all morning so I decided to go gem hunting

I'm not always that good at matching colours so please can I have some opinions on the stones in terms of being similar in colour and glowiness to the ring/stone I like.

http://www.multicolour.com/detail/?1062198567 - not enough orange/red?

Too pale, but love the cloudiness - http://www.multicolour.com/detail/?/details/single/sapphire/vsa311ai/&302686978

Too pink & over budget, but very yummy!!! http://www.multicolour.com/detail/?-565275060

Oooooo I want this one! Really lovely glow and to me the colour looks pretty similar - is it?

But, it's over budget. May be I need to get saving!

I'm not good for an opinion on trying match what you like originally--- but I had to say, impressive list!

You're quite the stone hunter. ;-) good luck!

The final one from Multicolour is the best of the bunch IMHO. As you can see, you get what you pay for.

Don't even try to go near rough - you really need a lot of experience to judge if it is a) cuttable and b) cuttable into anything decent and what the colour will look like once cut. It's a whole new ball game from judging a cut stone. I'm hoping to eventually learn how to do it but I'll be looking for serious handholding from some tame lapidaries before I even dip a toe in as it's a great way to get seriously burnt.

I agree and since it's more than I imagined I'm going to get saving as I would like something really nice rather than settling for something cheaper that doesn't meet the criteria, so as much as it pains me I'm going to stop looking until I have enough funds.

I did contact a lapidary yesterday who's checking his stock for something similar, but I'm not sure on pricing so will just have to wait and see, however at least I now know what I want and how much it's likely to cost.

Thanks :D
