What do you think of this tsavorite ring?

Once, I visited a gem fair where I fell in love with a ring made with a sugar loaf tsavorite cabochon. I think of it every now and then. Today I was offered this lovely tsavorite ring. Alas, it is a oval cab, not a sugar loaf. What do you all think? It’s $1500.

I know the darker green isn’t popular here but doesn’t it look just like imperial jade?

Ct of the cab and measurements?
Underside is open?
No black marks or distracting inclusions?
How translucent is it?

18 ct white gold, translucent... I didn’t ask about the ct weight. I think it’s very pretty but I I spent too much this month already, so I’m going to pass on it. I still have my heart set on having a sugar loaf cab of some kind.

Have you looked at sky gems? They have some lovely sugarloaf sapphires right now

Thanks for looking for me! I think sapphires will be out of budget. But I think tourmalines and garnets will be fine. I’m aiming for a nice clean rubellite now as a realistic target. But if I see the right tsav, I’ll go for it.

Little bit of an update. I found a sugar loaf tsavorite! Pretty included but I really like the color and the unexpected shape (a trillion sugarloaf!). It’s got flea bites on the bottom but I think they can be covered by the right setting. Not very big either at 7.4 x 7.2 and just under 2 cts but I think it will be good enough for me.

It’s now on the way to Daniel M who has agreed to make the ring for me!

It's soooo grassy! I lurve it

Last update to this thread with the finished ring I ended up making with this little tsavorite sugar loaf cab. I had it sent, sight unseen, to Daniel M for setting in a 14k rose gold bezel with a couple of pink sapphire accents. The band is argentium silver.

So the tsavorite cab itself is pretty included, it’s definitely not top gem grade like some of the cabs you see at gem shows. But I love the colour, which is a leafy true green and would be highly coveted if it were jade (I’ll just pretend it is)! It’s an overcast day but I think it will have a lovely glow when the sun comes out.




Stacked with rose gold bands.



With a Colombian emerald. The emerald is much more blue.
