This is my first post , but have been checking out Pricescope for a while. I have my eye on an Asscher for my engagement ring and bf and myself have been looking for a while. Can I ask your opinion? I hope Storm chimes in too. Here are the specs:
From White Flash, GIA, Asscher
1.52 carat
Clarity: VS1
Color: I
Measurements: 6.26 x 6.24 x 4.38
Depth: 70.2%
Table: 58%
Girdle: slightly thick to very thick
Culet: none
Polish: excellent
Symmetry: good
Fluorescence: none

I do not have any pics or idealscope yet

I''m really not sure what to look for when it comes to depth and table. If someone can let me know, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance for all the help.

Thanks Gypsy, I''ll take a look at that thread. I think I might have to go down in carat weight to fit my budget, but I first need to figure out the depths and tables.

There are threads where Storm lists his ideal range for both. I don''t remember what exactly the numbers were but they are around 58-62 for table and 62-65 ish for depth... but I''m really not sure what the exact numbers are. I know my asscher falls in there with 60 table and 64 depth though.

its a tad deep I like to keep them under 70 but some fine asschers are in that range too they just face up a little smaller.

Table 58-62, depth under 75 is the simplest rules with a catch.
out to 75 is fine but anything over 70 should carry a discount is my bottom line on it.

58-60/68 seems to be a target where some of the best ones are falling right now.

Okay so I was half right...lol. Personally I like spread... your spending all that money-- and I would want the best cut, biggest asscher (bigger in mm size) I could get in my price range. Of course, unlike non-step cuts with emeralds and asschers inclusions and color show more easily so... you have to watch those too.

Whats your budget? size target?
Ill take a look and see whats around.

My asscher has a 67% depth and I think it is quite pretty. Very deep. It is less than a 1/10 of a carat larger than the one you are talking about but it is nearly half a millimeter larger than the stone you are looking at...so it does seem to be a little small. But my asscher has a rather large table - 67%, but I think it is lovely.

Regardless - I'm sure from reading on here you've seen that with the fancy cuts, and asschers specifically, you can't tell by the numbers...you've got to see it in person!

Edited because I'm a moron...and can't remember the percentage depth of my asscher. Gah.

the following is from a complete amateur!!! :)

The asscher I just purchased has the following specs:

Carat weight: 0.86
Cut: Ideal
Color: G
Clarity: IF
Depth: 69%
Table: 56%

crown is 15.8%

It faces up fairly small because of the depth (5.20*5.13) but the combination of the depth, the smaller table, and the high crown make it sparkle like crazy. The table might actually be as small as I'd go, though, because the sparkle factor makes it difficult to get a good view of the windmill pattern.

If you don't mind it facing up smaller don't worry about the depth... just embrace the beauty of the entire stone (the side view of mine is amazing!) and put it in a setting that shows it all off.

another comment:
Symmetry: good
Id want to know why it got the good grade.. one or 2 minor facets slightly off that dont effect patterns then no problem, one of the major facets then id pass.

Thanks everyone for the great advice. Storm - I''d like to stick in the $5,500- $6,300 range and when I saw this stone I thought wow, I didn''t think I could get a stone with 1.5 carats for that price. But I''m willing to go down to around 1.35 carats if necessary to get a better looking stone. I really want to stay in the VS range, but do you think I can get away with an I color? Some things I''ve read says no, but I wanted to try. I have seen 2 I colors in person and they looked great - alone (not compared to the jewelers ring, which was a D) This stone is from WF, but it''s not in house so they can''t get pics, unless they bring it in and if I don''t buy it, I will have to pay a minimal amount. Which I think would be ok, because I know I''m still saving a lot of money by buying online than at a B&M. I''ll think it over in the next couple of days. But if anyone sees anything with those specs, please let me know.
Also, I forgot to mention the setting. It will be a 2 mm wide pave diamond band from a local jeweler that I am working with. The asscher will sit in the middle raised up (but not too tall). Then for my wedding bands, I''m going to have 2 more 2mm wide paves (one on each side). So I would like the stone to be over 6 mm so it is bigger than all 3 bands together. Each band will be 3/4 eternity.
I hope that makes sense, I just woke up

Thanks again eveyone.

You''ll hear a lot of different responses here.

My asscher is an "I" and I rarely see any color in it at all. I''d say 99% of the time it looks white white white. I even compared it to a friend''s ring that was an F, and in most lights, I am unable to really tell a difference.

That having been said, I don''t think that I am super color sensitive.

There are several of us that have I asschers or emeralds and are happy with them. But there are also folks that will counsel you not to go below an H.

I also went with a high clarity range- VVS2...just because asschers tend to show inclusions and such...they are so deep and people just LOVE taking my ring and putting it really close to their face to see the intricacies of the stone...So I understand why you want to stay in the high clarity range.

I color is asschers is a personal decision, you will likely see some color on occasion and if that doesnt bug you then kewl.
I like to stay H or above but there are people that love I and J asschers so its really a decision you have to make.

Id just give Tim or Jon a call at www.goodoldgold.com and have them hunt one down if it was me.

Thanks again to everyone. I''m so obsessed with these Asschers, but at the same time its driving me nuts trying to find "the one". But I have hope

I feel your pain, believe me. I looked at asschers and possible settings for months and then within the space of a couple of days, changed my mind and am hoping for a pink pear ring.

I agree that GOG is a great place to look for asschers, and the one I recently had set aside is a beauty at 2.26c. It''s up for grabs now so.....

Isaku5 - I wish I could get that one. Wow!!! a 2.26c

I know I''ll find the right one some time. I have already fell in love with the setting so thankfully that part is done. Thank god I''ve got a great bf who is behind me every step of the way through my obsession! hehe. A pink pear, I bet that is gorgeous, do you have pics?
