What do you think of this Asscher?

I have yearned for an Asscher for years, but they are on the pricey side. I found this on one Ebay. I like the setting, nice price, but the stone itself is very very small. What do you think? Would a half-carat Asscher even be visible on the hand? Would a half-carat SI2 be in danger of cracking from the inclusions? Am I a nitwit for even considering buying a ring from a pawn shop?

This isn't a 'deal'. Have you had an opportunity to view stones with online vendors such as James Allen? I would encourage you to look for stones that have a grading report from either GIA or AGS, they are the most consistent and reputable labs in the world.

However it is possible to find a beautiful stone on the secondary market, you just need to do so with caution. There are some really fabulous ebay shoppers around here, if you decide that you would like to go that route I'm sure they would be happy to assist you!

oh... a .5ct asscher will be smaller than many other cuts but it will be visible on the hand. Also, clarity is more important when considering an asscher because inclusions are more noticeable in step cuts than in brilliant cuts, many people recommend not dropping below a VS2 by GIA or AGS standards.

I think you might be disappointed with 0.50 ct unless you have 20/20 vision and are setting it in a bezel. For reference, a 1.5 ct Asccher has about the same appearance as a 1 ct round.

Buy a stone with a reputable lab report. 99.99 % of step cuts will not be eyeclean at SI1. Let alone SI2.

Ditto. I really prefer VS1+ in a step cut.

Aside from all the other negatives, yes, you will find a .5 ct. asscher very small in real life viewing. I have a 1 ct one in a right hand ring, and it is pretty small.

ha - I meant it will look the same size as a 1 ct.

1.5 ct of Asscher = ~ 1ct of round? Good to know! Thank you everyone!
