Hi all,

Brand new to diamond shopping and want to find a beautiful diamond for the beautiful girl in my life. I'm hoping that with your help I can get the most value for my budget.

I want to buy a princess cut, I don't want to spend much more than $20K and I'm hoping to get the most for my money. I'd like a diamond that looks colorless and inclusion free to the naked eye.

I've done a bit of reading here and have found this diamond. Please have a look and let me know what you think. Specs below and GIA cert attached, price is $20K on the dot:

Shape: Princess
Carat Weight: 2.21
Cut: Excellent
Color: H
Clarity: VS1
Lab: GIA
Depth%: 68.6
Table%: 71.0
Girdle: Thin to Very Thick
Symmetry: VG
Polish: VG
Culet: None
Fluorescence: N
Measurements:
7.52x7.45x5.11 mm
Ratio: 1.01

Thanks in advance for the assistance

The diamond I posted about is from ERD. Can I request a picture and an ASET from them?

I was thinking that H color and VS1 clarity was a good compromise between price and quality. Are you recommending coming down a bit on the clarity?

Did you already have it called in? ERD can do pictures, but if you haven't had it called in yet, I would see if Good Old Gold can get it, they have better photography.

I know these are more expensive, but if I were looking for square 2 caraters, I'd be getting one of these:

ERD will give you an aset. Well, I'm one for size and if you talk to the gemologist, they will give you an honest opinion on how clean the stone is at James Allen. The 2.61ct that I posted is an H, I'd put that one on hold and find out if it's eye clean and get an aset for it too.

JulieN,
Why do you prefer the radiant over the Princess? I don't know much at all about diamonds so if the radiant is better I'd like to know.

One of the reasons I like the 2.21 from ERD is because of the measurements. It measures even larger than the 2.61 you recommended. Is this important or am I completely off base?

Thanks again for all the help

The stone I recommended is a bit deeper. But do you have a link to the diamond you're interested in? It's hard to compare without seeing what it looks like. I love the one I recommended because it's a 2.6, faces up white and I love the facet pattern.

ok, that'll help.

These particular square radiants will have big, bold, colorful flashes compared to a princess. Princess has smaller, but more numerous, sparkles.

I've attached a photo as well as an ASET. Please have a look and let me know how the experts feel about this diamond.

Thanks again

meh. sorry. My advice is to not have virtual fancies called in, it is an exercise in disappointment. They need to be hand-picked by a vendor, or you can try to pick one from pictures.

Do you mind defining two terms for me

Virtual?

Calling in a diamond?

Two types of inventories, in-house, and virtual. In-house inventory means the diamond is on the premises, your vendor can go get it and look at it right then and there. For Internet vendors, in-house inventory usually has pictures posted on their website. Virtual means the diamond is somewhere else, and has to be delivered to vendor's office, which is what I mean by having it called in.

Some vendors like James Allen have pictures/videos for thousands of diamonds, they are not all in-house, but the pictures helps you narrow it down.

Jon did a really nice video on the Princess of Hearts and Solasfera princess cuts, it clearly explains the difference, they are both top cuts. (A generic princess will not look as good as the Solasfera.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WBqy47eJjuI

This is from ERD? It looks terrible! Did you put the one I recommended from James Allen on hold and request an aset from them? I'm pretty sure it'd look better...

Looked around, GOG doesn't have an Solasfera in your carat weight.

This is not the same, but they're similar: http://www.jamesallen.com/#!/loose-diamonds/princess-cut/2.06-carat-h-color-si1-clarity-sku-202842

I like this one but it is on hold right now: http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/princess-cut-loose-diamond-2835499.htm

And if you like the 2.08 H radiant I linked above, PS discount should bring it to about 21K. The 2.07 I colored is spreadier, though.

Thank you both for your help. I will look into the diamonds you have recommended.

Just for my own education, what was it about the 2.21 ERD diamond you didn't like? Why does it look like crap?

What I liked about the stone was the dimensions 7.52 x 7.45 and that it was a H VS1,

Thanks again and i truly appreciate your willingness to help me learn

Compare the 2.21 ASET to the Whiteflash ones I linked. Under the table, almost all red/blue. Under the crown facets, about 60/40 mix of red/blue and green, more red/blue than green.

2.21: predominance of green/black under the table, red only dominates the table on 1/4th of the stone (uneven distribution.) Under the crown facets, the outer (girdle level) crown is all green and black. The second crown step is showing some red but I think that is a reflection, ERD's ASET photography is sometimes a little off.

The aset is pretty bad. The more red on an aset the better performance. Green and blue is ok, but it's far too dark.
