I would not buy a stone with florescence because you can't guarentee they won't go milky, oily or white in certain natural and direct lighting. If you were buying a lower colored stone, the low florescence could help whiten the diamond but your already in the colorless zone. I wouldn't risk your fire and spark on florescence.

Don't sacrifice excellent symmatry for IF clarity. The best cut possible all around will enhance the color, clarity and CT of the diamond.

Unfortunately the person who made my Ering setting didn't follow my specifications (I have popped out the stone and sent it back now I have to start over) The main one was NO florescence. I think to get the stones to be G color to the eye she chose these and as you can see.. and it really is much worse in person because the camera really can't capture it.. they loose all sparkle and go milky or white especially in bring light and sunlight. Part of the problem is not well cut stones and light being choked off behind the stones as well. But look how clear my stone looks.. (Its very colorless but in this picture doesn't show that off so well.)

Although more than a third of these stones have strong florescence which I confirmed under a black light, even the ones with faint florescence appear milky in sunlight but this could be the effect of the poor cuts as well. I don't know.

WOW.. sorry this picture is so HUGE.

I meant to upload this one.. but I think its going to be really big too. I tried to upload the ones that showed the milky quality in my accent stones caused by florescence.. strong blue and strong blue white, deep green, and one stone does florese yellow under a black light. The rest of the stones are faint blue.

4cake, welcome!

Sorry, I just wanted to point out that negative effects from fluorescence is actually very rare and it is only usually strong blue which might show negatives, in fact, many here seek out fluorescence for various reasons, as many enjoy the effect!

To put this in perspective, an expert vendor here who has been selling diamonds for 30+ years, has said that in all that time, only a handful of strong blues have shown negatives such as oiliness or milkiness. Of course it is always best to check with the vendor regarding a diamond with strong blue, but generally speaking, there is rarely a problem.

Pretty ring too!

You might be interested in this thread to see many examples of PSers diamonds with strong blue fluorescence.

Also Josef if VVS clarity is what your GF wants, then no harm in searching for that, some want a very high clarity for various reasons and or to represent purity, get what you feel comfortable with.

Funny you say that. The most expensive tangible thing I have bought so far is a Plasma TV for $ 2.5K The price drops each day, but I choose never to search for the model and make ever again so that I have to feel bad again.

Telling me that its not gonna hold 90% of the value is def news to me mmmm

Unfortunately this is true. You are lucky to get back 50% of what you paid for any diamond with resale, diamonds are not good investments, hence the reason why upgrade policies are sought after.

Hi guys - Thanks very much for the all your opinions and insight. I did pick up the IF .9CT F diamond from BN. May or may not have been impulsive but as I said earlier, she was not going to back down on VVS1 or higher.

I hope this was a good decision. I would def like to hear your opinion if any of you think it was a wrong decision because the stone is not good or up to the mark (as in something that you can see that I dont/cant)..

To get a IF diamond, I def would have to pay a lil premium. But as I said, she was OK with a smaller diamond as long as the clarity and color was what she got. Paid 9k for that including the ring. I should probably get it next week.

It looks like a beautiful diamond. It gets a 1.3 on the HCA which is very good. I wish you both happiness!

If you decide to stick with it I am sure it will be beautiful and she will be proud of it. But when I read this on my cell phone today I couldn't help but think about the women that I have known in my day.

For example, me and my gf went shopping. She found this pair of army pants that I thought was terribly ugly, but then she saw that on the inside at the top was a beautiful pink flower pattering. She got really excited and I told her "don't pay 150 dollars for those pants, they are army pants, look like 10 dollar pants, and I know your style--you are not going to wear them. She got really mad saying I was like her dad and kept showing me the flower pattern and how it contrasted with the green--which was very beautiful by the way--and she just had to have them. Whatever, she got them.

She has never worn them, and it has been two years since then.

Anyway, my point is that some people can be quite fickle, especially about things that don't affect visual appearance. As in this instance, sure it helped in her mind to know that there was a beautiful flower pattern on the inside, but it didn't affect the pants once she had them on.

Thus, my concern would just be for the type of person who was bold enough (which I am not saying is bad) to tell you she won't go less than VVS1 in her Ering that you are buying for her. My thoughts are that she probably would not hesitate to tell you down the line if she wanted a bigger diamond. And I would be worried that as she wore her diamond and everybody asked her "oh, how many cts is it" and she says .9, and they are moderatly impressed, but then she watches the excitement on other peoples faces as they see other friends with 1.5ct diamonds, and as the Diamond Shrinkage Syndrom sets in that all these ladies talk about...well, over 10 years or so I bet that the desire to have a larger diamond is going to set in hard. Really hard. And while I don't usually support emphasising upgrade policies in Ering purchases, I think if you have a girlfriend who is REALLY emphasising qualities that can't be seen in the diamond--despite the expense to you before you have even proposed-- it is a very real possiblity that her taste will change in the future and she would rather have a larger diamond. Then you will be stuck with a 9,000 dollar pendant and a second huge purchase to make, where as dropping to VVS1 now or paying a litlte extra now at a vendor with an upgrade policy has a very real chance of saying you $9000 dollars in the future if her taste change. And If she is anything like the women I know, and she is already so bold, then I bet they will.

I am sorry to keep beating a dead horse, looks like a fine diamond to me from here, but that would be a major determinig factor for me in this particular situation.

Joe,
Congratulations. Post pics when you get the chance.

Yea, that information is actually available in the link you gave us originally. It seems to be an excellent diamond in itself. An IS image would be great to confirm the symmetry and consistency of the facets, but since it has very good symmetry it shouldn''t be a major concern--but would certainly be nice to have. You can always buy an Ideal scope and check it out for yourself and that would at least mean something. And if it is beautiful to you then it really doesn''t matter.

but again, from what I am hearing I think upgrade policies might be critical for you, but you seem to have decided that they don''t matter. Can I ask why that is? A very sentimental woman that would never want a to trade in her original Ering no matter how much she wanted a bigger diamond? I know it isn''t my business, but I really don''t have much to do with my time these last weeks and I would like to know for curiosities sake!

(but feel free not to answer if you feel it isn''t my business. And the only reason i continue to persist is because you acknowledged your purchase as a spontaneous one, thus leaving room open for discussion. If you are positive, then I will just congratulate you as well

No worries dude. As I said earlier, she does not want to go down on clarity or color. To me personally, it does not matter one way or the other. Whatever fits my budget.

I have a choice. Either I buy a VVS2 and a bigger stone which she is not going to be happy about from get go (cos thats not what she wanted) or, as you said, her unhappiness or expectation for a bigger one from a future date (1 yr or maybe 3 or 5 yrs who knows) . Think I will take her unhappiness from a future date, but then again, we gonna be in it together if she wants bigger one. Who knows where I will be and if I can or cannot afford another one... Thats my rationale for the timebeing. Rather get her what she wants now. Plus from my family my side, we usually prefer much higher quality stones as opposed to size. So got the backing from my family on this as well. So I can see her point of view....
