Welcome Keith. I'm only a newbie but sounds like you got quite a deal. Just by doing a quick price comparison on Blue Nile (I like their search engine the most) for D color IF clarity stones with a fair to very good cut certified by AGS or GIA, a 1.4 ct is somewhere near the $20,000 zone.

The difference with your purchase is that it is certified by GEL (or do you mean EGL?) which is not as reputable as AGS/GIA. So to get a better idea of your stones true 4C's (and hence if it is truly a good deal), many here would recommend getting an independent appraisal. To the untrained eye such as myself, a G/H SI1/SI2 may appear similiar to a your D IF. A 1.3-1.49 ct G/H SI1/SI2 fair to very good cut on BN ranged from $6300-9000.

One thing for sure is that your purchase is NOT an Ideal cut. It scores a "4.8-good--only if price is your main criterion" on the Holloway Cut Advisor

(a calculator many use as a screening tool for ideal cuts).

Hope this helps.

Wow, a 1.4 carat D IF for that price is an amazing deal. Even if the color and clarity are both two grades off (G VS1), that's still a great price. The cut leaves something to be desired, though. If it were me, I would take a little of the money you saved and have the diamond recut to true ideal proportions. You might lose a little carat wieght, but personally, I'd rather have an exceptionally cut 1.3-1.35 carat diamond than a poorly cut 1.4 carat diamond.

Oh wow! That price is definitely idealistic

At that point it is worth getting two... or have it recut or what not.

Is it a typo? IS the stone certified? Was this a "secondary market" (great) deal?

That is a great deal....buy the way how much would it cost to get re-cut and where do you send it to be re-cut (hopefully somewhere in North America).

Best Regards,

this rock was certified by the Gemological European Laboratory on DEC 2002. I don't know what is the different between the GEL and the EGL but the certificate papers are identical except the signature

Interesting... Do you have the cert? Each lab has standard format for it's diamond reports: if yours does not look like EGL's, than it is not. Given the highest grades, one may well wander what's up.

There must be some identification mark on the certificate: such as contact info of the lab that issues it and the official mark of the institution.

It may be that I just do not know about yet another small but great gem lab, but otherwise, "GEL" could be to EGL what "Guci" is to Gucci and D-IF... who knows what?

keith,

what a deal for this stone. If I owned it, I would definately have it recut. I had a similar size stone recut (1.47 ct) by Paul of Infinity it was arranged though Wink. Since it's under 1.5, you'll end up definately over 1 ct after a recut. So you're still in that 1.0-1.49 range.
