Interest & late fees.
Taking a cash advance from a credit card.
Buying groceries at the corner store rather than a supermarket.
Spoiled food.
Buying something - then losing it and having to buy it again.

Having to pay for sachets of butter/mayo/ketchup at an eatery.
Insurance.
Junk food.
Going to the doctor - when you are already feeling better.
Paying for call time, channels or internet access that you never get around to using.
Candy & soft drinks at the cinema.
Parking.
Designer goods.
Not shopping around.

Traffic tickets

Valet parking (I don''t mind walking)
Home phones (I''m already paying for a cell phone)
Luxury hotels (I really only sleep there - a mid-range place is good enough)
Bottled water (unless there''s really no other water available)

Definitely!

Late charges on bills. Bills in general, especially heat and electricity. Gas for my car. $500 just to walk into a hospital, even if it''s just the flu.

Life in general is way too expensive.

luxury cars (6+ years, you need a new one)

K-cups for Keurig (a re-usable one''s good)

All eating goods at the movies (YIKES!!)

Oil heat (when you have crappy windows...)

Laptops (you can''t really upgrade parts)

Car-Wash (when next day it rains)

Nail polish (usually chips in 2 days)

Nylons (hate when they run)

jewelry to some degree (especially when you custom make rings with CZs and re-sell to fund other projects)

Starbucks ($5 for a latte... what?!)

Parking/traffic violations (suxxxxx)

Bank fees when you use another bank''s ATM (that one always makes me cringe!!)

Luxurious Dining (Really, i can cook myself a steak for much much less)

Drinks in a bar ($12 for a martini?)

all of the above, and shipping charges on online purchases. i refuse to pay them.

I know I have lots of things that I consider to be a waste of money, but these are the two I can think of now:

Home phones -- we just use our cell phones
Many more cable channels than we could possibly need/want -- I wish we could build our own cable packages

Home phones (I use my cell all the time anyway, I don''t think I would ever use a home phone even if I had one)
Parking tickets
Buying candy/drinks at a movie theater
Rent (if only DH and I had bought our apartment we wouldn''t have been throwing out so much money every month this past year.....

)
Spoiled food

I''m sure I''ll think of more over the course of the night... I hate wasting money

Agreed! My coworkers and I were just talking about this at work. We wish we could just pay a flat rate per channel and pick what we wanted to subscribe to.

Anything that doesn''t add to my net worth is a waste of money, however for some reason I gladly waste money on doggy playgroups, travelling, getting my hair colored and eating good food (this goes for the dogs, too)! The things I absolutely hate wasting money on are: anything gadgety or techy like cell phones or TVs, vehicles (even though we buy used and never take out a loan, I hate how much they depreciate), clothing, shoes, purses, etc. and furniture!

Princesss -- This is one of D''s pet peeves. There are some channels that we don''t have, like HBO, that he really wants again, but we don''t want to spend the money. So instead, we''re paying for many other channels that we don''t watch. It''s stupid, really.

NEL -- I feel the same way about many of the things you mentioned. I''m not into purses, designer clothes, or shoes. I like admiring what other people buy, but it would be a waste of money if I spent a lot of money on those things. I don''t wear makeup, so buying it and having it take up space would be a waste.

Another thing that I feel is a waste of money (for me) is fashion magazines. I hate magazines that are nothing more than ads for various things.

I agree with most of these especially using another banks atm and getting charged fees. Drives me nuts. Unlike Amethyste, i think electric heat is a waste of money here and I''d gladly do oil if I had the option.

Regarding home phones, for years we didn''t have one and only used our cells. Problem was the reception. In nyc (at least manhattan), it''s pretty horrible. Dropped calls, can''t always get through, not understanding what someone on the other end was saying because they''re fading in and out. So last year, i caved and ordered a landline. In case of emergency, the last thing I want is a dropped call to 911.

Ugh, I agree with so much that you all have mentioned! Although, I think we have some extremes of what has been mentioned.
overpriced cell phone plans
overpriced internet - you can''t get anything at a decent price without having to buy a cable package
shipping charges - it''s so irritating that somehow something will cost an extra $20 to make it''s way up here even though the weight hasn''t increased and it isn''t getting over nighted or anything.
car prices! - if BF and I had bought the exact same car up here, it could have cost us at least $3,000 or $4,000 more...but probably more than that actually.
produce! we don''t get anything that''s near the quality that everybody else can get and it''s the biggest disappointment when you want some tasty veggies or fruit!

Sales tax!

Clothes that I find in my closet with the tags still on that don''t fit when I find it or I don''t like it anymore.

Things that I had a coupon for but forgot to use/take with me...grrr.

nobody said "jewelry"??

Expensive sunglasses and watches.

I don''t get why people spend so much on either...

Just having to pay more than what I should be paying for something.

If an apple is $10. Well, an apple is $10. But if I paid $12 for a $10 apple, that would be a waste to me.

I agree with most everything said - especially by NEL - I am on a strict budget so anything not necessary or that won''t significantly improve my quality of life (i.e., expensive dark chocolate!) is a waste - for me that also includes make-up and cosmetics (don''t use them) and expensive haircuts (I go to the stylist school and get a great cut (supervised!) for a fraction of the price of a salon.

Is this things that are a waste of money but you would still pay for them or things that are a waste of money and you would rather die than lay out cash towards them?

Waste of money but will still pay (only as a last resort):
-parking, nothing is as sweet as finding that free parking spot right in front of where you need to go. NOTHING.
-not shopping around
-shipping fees

Would rather die (well, not really):
-haircuts at fancy places. I''ve only had one haircut at those places that made me super happy. The rest were similar to the haircuts I get for $30 or less.
-coffee/tea out
-massages
-ATM fees
-pasta dishes at restaurants - I don''t like buying something for $5 or more what I can make for less than a dollar

Hmmm...I guess most of the stuff on my list isn't a waste of money so much as overpriced.

Shampoo and conditioner-I buy them but they just seem so expensive!
Haircuts-I wait WAY too long to get my haircut. I used to cut my hair myself so that's probably why.
Hair color
Cars
Paying full price for clothing-great discounts and free clothes for years will do that to you.
ATM fees-I refuse to get $ out of an ATM that charges fees unless I'm out of the country, and even then I try to go to my bank's sister banks in those countries.

HI:

Nailpolish. I use the stuff only on my toenils and only in the summer--so anything I buy gets used maybe four or five times then stored til I throw it out the next summer.

magazines
perishable food sold as buy one get one free (why not just make the quantity I can actually use half price?!)
cigarettes (but oh, how I miss them)
TV channels you have to pay for (over my rotting corpse)
Driving round endless shops / towns / retail parks to get the best deal (my father does this)

food at the airport, so expensive
hardback books (too hard to read in bed and they take up way too much room in my handbag)
skincare (I hate to think how much money I have wasted on various skincare products over the last few years, I should have just gone back on the pill!)
buying lunch everyday, I don''t enjoy what I buy so why don''t I get organise and start making my own lunch?

Buying anything to eat at a movie theater is a total waste of money. I''d rather smuggle in snacks and sweets in my handbag :-). They charge more for my husband''s size cup of Coke than I buy two liter bottles for.

Eating out in expensive restaurants. I can''t help but sit there and think of all the groceries I could have bought with that $125.-/150.- A $35.- dinner at the diner suits us just fine.

Funeral flowers for half day or one day wakes. I''d rather make a nice donation to someone''s favorite charity.

Any cosmetic item that gets left in the bathroom vanity unused.

I based mine on things that fall under this category: "If it weren't for my own stupidity, I wouldn't be spending this money."

- Traffic Tickets
- ER visits for falling off of barstools (a very unfortunate incident that resulted because of stilletos, not alcohol
9.gif
)
- Leaving perfectly good coupons for 20% off laying on the counter at home
- Not replacing your brakes before the rotors have to be replaced as well
etc...

There are things that I don't *like* spending money on, but really, what is my other option if I don't buy gasoline for my car?

This drives me CRAZY!!!!

Shoes that end up being horribly uncomfortable.

$1 for a can of pop from a vending machine. I can get a 2 liter for that much at the store.

I''m curious as to why you consider insurance a waste of money.

I don''t enjoy paying it by any means, but it''s definitely less than I would pay out of pocket for covered expenses.

I do consider atm/overdraft fees to be a huge waste. FI was so guilty of these before we merged finances, but the $20/month he was getting hit with added up fast!
